Re: bad garage door or foundation issue?

1,2,3,

Re: truss layout for out of square garage

Lary G and Buddy nailed it.

Take a dry string down the fascia to a board nailed to the top plate at the farthest end of the addition. Allowing for the fascia and fascia backing board and assuming...

Re: Corrugated metal ceiling

D,
if they overlap on a joist, they will seal up fine (they make a double sided tape to really seal it up) and if not, you can drill and pop rivet the overlap. Another trick I learned was using a...

Re: whats better Trusses or Rafters for overall strength?

Bear,
even though a 6"by12" is pretty strong, it wont span 40' with out sagging and when it sags, it will push out at the bottom of the rafters. You could sandwich (flitch plate) the beam if you...

Re: Hanging shelves, etc. on R Panel?

Fab,
google French cleats.
Ya take a 1"by and cut a 45degree top edge on it. With the high point out and low point in, ya attach it to your wall. Then on the back of anything ya want to hang, you...

Re: Concrete slab becomes slippery when wet after rain

If you want to paint or seal it, there is an additive called fish scale. Add it to your sealer or paint and apply. We did this on a textured concrete porch that was slick as hell, after words, not a...

Re: whats better Trusses or Rafters for overall strength?

If a carpenter cant stick frame a roof as strong as a truss roof...you hired the wrong carpenter.

Bear,
I couldn't open your attachment but, what you describe is what is called timber framing....

Since I'm working under the jacked up wall of the garage and below grade I can't figure out how I could get a compactor in there. Will I be ok without stone or mechanical compaction?

Zac,

Re: Can this "butcherblock" top be fixed

I remolded a building into a restaurant and the owner brought in a top like that asking if it could be saved and reused. It was in pretty rough shape but, I ended up saving enough for the serve...

Re: Truss question - new idea

Holy ...., good find, Deke is right, those will hold up a tank!

Use a framing square, one side will be 24", the other should be 16", with the 24" side level to the bottom of your ceiling joist,...

Re: free slab, what to do with it?

I was afraid you'd run into issues with an over pour but, you'd still be able to pour an extension next to it, just drill into the existing slab and anchor your rebar to it, an extra 2' may not sound...

Tom,
I hope this catches you in time.
Before ya start building walls, ya need to do the layout work. Don't assume any of the exsisting walls are plumb, straight or square. Start out with one wall...

ya might check out the free span metal buildings, fairly cheap but a sound building. When pricing out, tell them your intentions and ask questions, lots of questions.

Good luck and...
