Shaping a Rail Road Tie

I'm in the process of preparing to make some garage door thresholds out of rail road ties and need advice on how to shape the dust lip.

We are looking to construct the threshold like this:...

Re: Underground garage extension

This is really expensive. You'd have to shore up the wall, probably install a steel beam across the span to hold up the house above.

This is even more expensive. If its a stoop, you'd have...

Re: Insulating a radiant heat floor

^^^ It's all in the instructions. Every PEX system I've seen calls for protection for sawcut contraction joints and full expansion joints. If "nobody" wants to follow the manufacturer's...

Re: Insulating a radiant heat floor

Concrete weighs approximately 150 lbs. per cubic foot. So, the weight of a 6" slab is 150 pcf / 2 (1/2 foot thick slab) /144 (sq in per sq ft) = 1/2 psi for the weight of the concrete in the slab. ...

Re: What type walk through door between conditioned and non conditioned shop space

If you call a company that does commercial drive-thru or walk-in freezers, I bet they will have something.

Re: Does depth matter??

No matter what, you'll have shrinkage cracks radiating out from those. (like any column or penetration) So I'd go full depth. Going deeper will also better distribute the forces on the slab.

Re: in the wall mounted exhaust fans?

If you are just looking to vent small amounts of exhaust, CO, or non-combustible vapors, a HRV should work for you year-round.

Re: Insulating a radiant heat floor

He either doesn't know what he's doing (with regard to foam selection) or what happened on the other jobs that failed.

The foam under the floor should be at least a 60 PSI board. (You can't get...

Re: Garage Door Size

If you are going to heat the garage, I'd recommend to go with a smaller door to conserve heat loss when you open it.

I'm used to small garages in the city where an 8' wide door is normal. 10' is...

Re: Concrete Floor Expansion Joints

The control joints can be on the doors, but if you are going to install a lift - you may need the joints in specific places. If you need to do this, you can add joints. As long as the longest...

Re: Pressure Treated Deck Repair, Opinions Please

This could work against you. Unless you know who the wood manufacturer is (hence, who warranties it) and can prove it, then you won't get anywhere with the legal option. If you have a rep who is...

Re: Concrete floor pitch question please . . .

A lot of people are not aware of this. Gasoline vapors (like Propane) are heavier than air and fall to the ground. (Octane molecules are actually much heavier than Propane - and any common molecule...

Re: Granite Counters

Granite works when you have a solid base under it. (Just like concrete.) When it goes on top of a bench and has hollow space under it, it can break easily.

Re: Remove middle post with long beam

I once lived in a house where we added a story. The beam held the weight but we had to add columns to get the increased footer capacity.

I just remembered - We could have gone with one column in...

Re: Granite Counters

^^^ This is a great idea. A granite counter top installer can cut it down and polish the edges to be anything you want.

Its really too brittle to be a practical "work bench" and its porous - so...

Re: Concrete floor pitch question please . . .

If you are going to store anything with fuel in it, I found a source that stated a minimum 1/8" slope every 1' is needed to get gasses out of the garage.

Its not so much the water you need to...

I'd use 120V computer fans. They are small, whisper quiet, and very efficient.

Re: Remove middle post with long beam

There will be negatives to removing the column:
- The new beam will cost more.
- The new beam will likely be deeper, (hang lower) even its metal.
- The walls at either end of the beam may not be...

Search for "plastic dome skylight" and you'll find what you are looking for. Nothing fancy - perfect for an unfinished and non-climate controlled garage.

"Slip" PVC Pipe

Does anyone know how I can get a hold of PVC pipe, which will slide tightly over regular Schedule 40 sizes.

For example, I need a 4.5" pipe to slide over a normal 4" pipe.

I'm building an ICF...
