Shop tool? Probably my Lincoln Power MIG 255. Actual hand tool would have to be either my SnapOn or Proto torque wrenches.

iPad.
Use it quite often. Great for PDF storage and viewing, looking up parts, troubleshooting, and so on.

![]() Brunton Pocket Transit It was $425 new when my Dad (RIP) got it for me. It's the single most useful tool in geology outside of a rock hammer. That's actually one of the cheaper ones (it's composite) the waterproof aluminum international versions (Brunton Geo) go for $500+. |

I have several dial bore gauges that are about $1000 each. Some of the electronics are more, but I don't consider them hand tools.

I think my snap on 3/4" torque wrench is worth the most by itself. I bought it lightly used for $500, it is $8xx.xx new last I checked.

A couple of my most expensive to replace tools.
My 30" Mitutoyo vernier calipers, with a pair of 18" Mitutoyo verniers in front. ![]() My Webber angle block set. ![]() And near and dear to my heart, my Lufkin 901A precision gauge (last made in the early 60's). Only truly valuable for personal reasons.

The most expensive is the one that you cut something off yourself with or get something in your eye with. By the time you add ER and doctor bills, a screwdriver can be worth $2,000 or three thousand dollars if you poke something important and it gets infected and you miss work or are disabled. Safety first is the most important and a priceless tool in the shop. Scanners and other tools are nothing compared to injury. A fall off a cheap ladder would also be an expensive tool.

Don't ask me the snap on # darn how you guys can remember all those little codes and numbers but it is a 1/2 drive long handle ratchet. I bought it on CL and I had to drive 70,000 miles out to nowhere, (Mars I think).
Anyhow the guy said he needed it to crack open a few engine bolts and he no longer needed the snap on ratchet. Which seemed odd to me to pay the snap on man a ton of money and only use the ratchet for a few jobs but I guess that sometimes happens. To tell you the truth I think I probably paid a small fortune in gas just for the round trip drive and if snap on had mailed it to me ; then maybe all together I would have broke even. Still it was a fun day to be out for a long ride in the fresh air! |
