I wish I would have known 30 years ago that my love for my 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 was much stronger than the love I thought I had for my then Wife. She sold my car while I was stationed overseas and divorced me when I came home.
Still looking for the car and still trying to not to find her.

If you finish your walls with plywood, when placing receptacle boxes on wall studs roughly 4ft off the ground, plan on the very top or bottom of the box to line up with your plywood seams. Otherwise you get to cut twice as many panels as you really need to

"Those old dudes" like my Dad, his friends and those guys at church - were pretty sharp and could DO some stuff. They had some awesome stories, too.

I should have bought that BIG set of tools.

I should have taken out a 15 year mortgage.

Have a plan for your work space, even if you can't execute it all at once. If you have a plan, then you have something to work towards instead of just putting things wherever, buying this or that storage cabinet, and then having to do it all over again later so it all works together...

This has turned into a great thread. I expected the first response to be: "this has been done a hundred times dummy".

Great stuff here, and some sentimental too, so I am going to add to my original post:

"Take care of your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone"

Spend more time listening to your granddad's stories. Wish I had done that x2.

Usually, your wife's questions are not to tell you how stupid you are, but rather to point out all the important details you haven't considered yet.

I should have NEVER sold my 1980 Fiat Spider convertible for scrap just because it needed an new engine.

Give more things away to people who can use and appreciate them. It will come back to you in spades.

The best time I ever had was when my grandpa gave me a box of nails, a hammer, and a whole box of assorted wood cutoffs.

DO NOT use the corner of a flathead screwdriver on a philips screw.

Earplugs, safety glasses and masks are really great inventions. Use them.

Keep dog treats in the shop.

Throw away shop vacuum filters more often then you think you need to.

The guy at Home Depot doesn't know. He has an opinion. That's not the same thing.

1. Plumbing: go for it! Just never try to reuse a float, trap, seal or washer. If you want any chance of fixing it without a leak, replace it all.

2. If its easy to snake the drain, you've punctured a hole in the trap.

3. There is no end to repairing/patching a house that has galvinized plumbing.

4. 93% of all plumbing leaks will be buried in a wall or ceiling.

5. Electrical: go for it! Invest in a volt-alert. Make sure the circuit is dead.

6. x2 on the trailer vs truck.

Make it 30 years... If I knew then what I know now....I would have gotten more a$$ than a toilet seat.

Not me. If I knew 30 years ago what I know now, I would know that " that ***** is not made of gold" and I wish I had spent less time chaseing it and spent mor time persuing more importent things in life. I would be a lot more successful in life than I am now.

I had no grandparents. One set was dead the other set was institutionalized.

My kids had very little interaction with their grandparents. One set lived 200 miles away, the other 50.

I am working to change that !

Get it in writing.

When it comes to women, choose one not because you want to go to bed with her, but because you want to wake up next to her.

Get a real estate license and invest heavily in real estate in the 90s. Sell in 06-07. Retire and do something fun for "work".

Invest in Google

Becareful of the toes you step on today, for they are connected to the a$$ you will have to kiss tomorrow.

Related corollary: A company organization chart is like a tree of monkeys: those at the top look down and see smiling faces, those at the bottom look up and see assholes.

Well I already knew back then that tools are a lifetime investment and buying quality the first time around costs less in the long run. What I didn't know?
1. How damn fast the next 20 years were going to fly by! :3gears:
2. Back then I didn't know if I ever wanted kids? :headscrat In a few weeks my oldest turns 18! :wtf:

Always take the tension off manual garage door springs before you do ANYTHING to the door.

AMEN to that....
Prior to moving to Oregon from SoCal in 2009, we were trying sell our nice LG front-load washer/dryer setup. Didn't need to move them up to Oregon. Getting close to blast-off time, we just gave them to some good friends of ours. They, in turn, donated their perfectly good (but slightly older) combo to a young couple that was in need, with no $$. Pay it forward is a good policy.

20 years ago I was 14

I wish I knew how important school and college really were and that the decisions that I made then would drastically effect my future!

To record stories from ALL of my family that have since passed on.

Always plan and do things the right way the first time - always take it slow.

I have learned more lessons than most will in a lifetime at this point in my life and have tried numerous trades and careers, and looking back I would not necessarily change a thing - I look forward to the next 20 years!

+1 on listen to the "old" folks.

My grandparents passed away before I was old enough to understand. Both of LOML's Grandmothers live WELL into their 90's. They were made from some stern stock. They both came in thru Ellis Island as children and lived long and successful lives.

+1 on the practical skills.

I should have shown more interest as a helper on the construction site. I have no practical experience doing rough carpentry and would have picked up a ton then.

Cheers

Jim

Since I was 4 some 20 years ago there is already things I wish I knew and still lots to learn. Like now I have to go and try out this Evapo Rust. I just seen that in a magazine the other day and was thinking it was just another product that would disappoint me.

Now there is something every teenage boy needs to know! Lots of wasted time and money there.

If a girl doesn't seem that interested, just move on, there's an endless supply.

I had a '71 850 spider that I rebuilt the motor that i built with my ex (meaning she sat and watched), all it needed was a new dizzy. When we broke up I wanted it gone and sold it for $500 the next day... BIG MISTAKE!

Don't sell of get rid of stuff in anger! Better yet, never sell ANYTHING. I miss ALL of my cars, even the crappy ones... :(

Some of the most valuable, practical lessons in life come from holding a flashlight for your Dad while he fixes something in the middle of the night.
