Default Help!!! 99 Ford Windstar horn stuck on and won't start!

My wife was running some errands with our '99 Ford Windstar this morning, and stopped by home for a bit. After it was sitting about a half hour, I went out to use it to run an errand or two, but when I tried to start it, but the horn would go off when the key was in the "start" position. I tried a few times, and it did the same thing each time, until finally the horn stuck on even when the key was in the "off" position. I disconnected the battery immediately, removed the horn relay fuse, and tried again, but it won't turn over.

Any ideas or suggestions on where to start?

Thanks!

Sounds a bit like a vehicle anti-theft system going nuts. Does the fuel pump prime when the key is turned on? If not, I'd be even more convinced its some type of VATS taking a dump on ya.

Battery is low on My Tahoe the alarm goes into "freakout" mode. Alarm blaring no crank even if I hadn't set the alarm.

Horn button/switch. Part of the air bag assembly.

But why would it not start? The clock spring wire should have nothing to do with starting...

OK, I didn't think of that, but I don't think (big think...) the horn was blowing that long. (but, horns do draw a bit of electricity...)

Pretty sure it isn't the battery. It was new about a year ago, and started the car fine less than an hour earlier.

Everything seems normal when I first turn the key to the "run" position (now that the fuse for the horn is removed), but when I go to the "start" position, nothing happens (as if I was trying to start it were in gear or something).

Possible problem with either the horn relay or the front electronic module? I would check the relay first.

Edit: Also looks like if you take out the 25A fuse to the horn, it also cuts the power to the front electronic module.

Windstars are known for many different electrical gremlins!

Ours drove me nuts!

Someone mentioned rain, ours was very moisture sensative.

Thought I'd give an update on the progress.

I ended up bringing it to the Ford dealer, none of the lower cost independent shops in town would touch it (including one that specialized in auto electronics and car alarms). First thing the dealer said it was was the PATS transducer. They replaced it, and did all the re-programming to the keys and such, but still wouldn't engage the starter. After about a day or two that they spent on the phone with the support and engineers at Ford, they finally determined that it was a bad instrument cluster. They wanted big bucks for a new one through Ford, but they were willing to put a used one in for $100 plus $100 labor. They couldn't (wouldn't?) give me a clear answer as to why two things that cause the same result went bad at the same time, but we have it back and it's running as it was before the problem started. The only bad thing is that now the gear indicator doesn't work, but the odometer shows 20,000 fewer miles than when we brought it in, so it all evens out.

It was probably just the cluster in the first place.
