Homemade hutch

I'm going to build a hutch for my box because I can't see paying 2000 dollars for something I can build for 400 when i have fabrixation skills and can paint. And I have the tools to do it all. The only things I have not decided is whether I should use 1 inch angle or 1 inch square tubing. The angle is cheaper and a bit easier to work with. The tubing would be a bit my stout. I could also use a combination of both. My only other question is where could I find

Are the hutches you would buy retail even as strong as 1" angle?

I honestly have no idea. I dont know anyone with a hutch that I could look at. another thing im having a hard time with is the door will be 32" tall but its only 25" deep. so it wont fold all the way into the top.

What if you style it like the older Snap-On top boxes? Don't those fold onto the top of the box?

I have the same plan as you, but I'm not ready to start it yet. I have a rough idea though and was planning on box tube, but I bet angle will work just as well. I believe the SO KRL and Epiq boxes use 14 ga for the support and 16 ga for the skin so I would assume the hutches were the same way. If you do it please make a thread with lots of pics! I'm betting this guy could provide some info as well...

Yeah I will provide lots of info because its really an easy project that I couldnt find any info on. I am finishing putting a truck together that I cant get running so when I am done with that I will be getting some steel and putting it together with pictures posted on here. ANY INSIGHT ON CHEAP STEEL PEGBOARD?

Ive got a hutch and top locker on one of my cornwell boxes. The lid is 2 part with a piano hinge holding it together. Hydraulic shocks hold it in the upright position. I never use the lid so I unbolted it and threw it in the attic.

Angle should be more than enough unless you plan on stacking heavy things on top or hanging them off the side. Use slat wall instead of metal pegboard. Design it so it can be replaced somewhat easily if the need arises.

The angle in the hutch is where the door is split in 2.

The hutch I have was discounted down to $1500 due to a small dent on the lower left side.The hutch you posted on the red box is a economy hutch.

I can take pics of my hutch on Monday if you want.

I'd love more pics of that snappy box. I thought of building it sorta like that Cornwall hutch but make it pop up like a montezuma road box. I want it to feel very inclosed and away from everyone else. It's annoying having guys walk by and grab paint or brake clean off my box and then I have to go grab more. I just want it to seclude my work area as good as possible. And I'm 6'1" so it has to be fairly tall. I just thought about making it fold twice and just sit on top. I have 3 6 foot sections of piano hinge for it. I'll draw up a few designs and see what I like. I want to use it to lock tools in the top. I need to see what this slate wall is

Okay I've seen that in hutches. After some researching and looking I'm going to stick to pegboard. It's cheaper and although isn't rated for as much weight, has many more hanging options. Nothing I hang up will be heavy. For light I am going with the LED rope and a 30w power converter 120ac to 12dc. Still not sure on the door.

Hutch doors are almost like miniature garage doors lol on that note it would be sweet to set it up on a motor with remote so you could open it writ the push of a button just sayin

How is metal pegboard cheaper than slate wall? Personally I would just use regular pegboard and call it a day especially since now you say you are not hanging anything heavy.

Why not just run a T8 fixture in the hutch. Hell of a lot cheaper and probably can achieve a better flood of light vs LED cans or rope lighting

I priced it out and steel pegboard to cover the interior is cheaper than slatwall panels.

I was worried that possibly hitting the bulbs would make one hell of a mess? no worry with that?

You're building it - put a wire screen over the UV tube/fixture.

...or a piece of that thin white plastic under it. We did that under the fluorescents in the bathroom and it came out nice.

Don't spend 6 months planning the perfect design, just get a plan that fits your skill level and tools available. Then build it.

Later on if it does not fulfill your dreams sell it for at least cost of materials and build another that does.
I've built 6 small toolboxes in the last two years and currently have none, two of three of my cabinets with drawers are still with me.
