Where to buy 100 gal. propane tank

I'm looking to purchase a 100 gallon propane tank. My local gas company quoted me $650 for the tank plus $60 for a regulator and $110 an hour to hook it up to my line.

To lease a tank they want $60 a month plus propane would be $2.81 versus $2.01 a gallon for an owned tank.

Do these prices sound about right? I have my 75,000 btu Mr.Heater installed with the gas line out threw the wall ready for gas.

Is that a 100 or 1,000 gal tank? Probably about right for a 1,000 gal tank.

Buy the gas off season to save on that end - maybe parially fill it this fall and then fill it come spring. Friends on a farm bought a tank (think the size of a semi trailer) from a propane dealer going out of business a couple of years back so they can buy propane for drying grain when the gas price is low(er) in spring and summer.

Anyway...Your best bet is usually to buy a used one from your local Propane place, they almost always have some....I'd keep calling around... And if you sign up with them for service you can sometimes get your tank (new or used) for a very low cost.

Some welding supplys have propane tanks that size. We have a 100 gal. for my wife's kiln. I pay 5.00 a month on the bottle rental. about 60 to fill it recently. The cost of propane is a sore point with me as my home and shop is heated with it too.

Tractor Supply has them. Buy 2...... they are cheap, and you will save on the fill up. It cost just as much to go to the house to fill 2 as it does to fill one. My propane supplier doesn't charge me a rental, nor did they charge for the regulator. I don't use that much at home, but I do use a lot at the shop. If you shop around for price, you will find the best deal. Negotiate with the lower priced supplier for the best price. There is no difference in quality, only price..

Rule of thumb is about $1 per gallon for tanks. a 100 gallon tank should not run you more than $100. $650 is a very good deal for a new 1000 gallon tank, and a pretty good deal for a used one.

Please read my post. I need to buy a 100 GALLON tank. I have no desire to buy a 24 gallon 100 pound tank.

Are you sure the $60 lease was per month? I pay $55 a year down near Annapolis for a 100gal tank. If I used more propane, they wouldn't charge a lease fee at all. I want to say they quoted me somewhere in the $600 range to buy it a couple years ago. Sounds like your propan would be cheaper though, I think I paid over $3 last fill. I only use a partial tank a year, it's just connected to a fireplace.

Hard to find 100gl (pig) tanks. They are few and far between. So the propane supplier usually prices you a new one.

Cheaper to go with a 300-500gl tank. I know that it's overkill, but there are way more of them out there. Check farm auctions, ect.

My wife swears that is what Southern States quoted her today. I find it hard to believe too!! She is going to call around to other companies tomorrow. What company do you deal with in Annapolis?

I use Amerigas. Have never really shopped around though, that was who the builder hooked us up with.

At $60 a month, you might as well buy it! Paid for in under a year.

That's what I told her. Something just doesn't sound right with what they told her.....We have Amerigas up here. She'll be calling them!!

Did you ever consider that she might have misunderstood what they said, and that the fault lies with her? I suggest that you call the same company again and ask the question yourself. Nothing personal against your wife, but being in business, many times people are not listening to what you are saying, and write down the incorrect information. More than likely, this is the problem.

Yes I've considered it and so has she. She will be calling them again in the morning also. Thanks for your help.

We had 2 100gal tanks at my last shop from Suburban Propane. There was no charge for the tanks and we were on an automatic delivery plan. They would come out and fill them and all we paid for was the gas.

Unless residential is a different deal, I would call a couple of different suppliers and see what they say. I have never heard of anyone having to pay rent on the tanks as long as they were buying the propane from the same company that the tanks belonged to ?
