Default When to drive on new concrete driveway?

My brother just got a new house and they just poured the driveway (pad was done at least a month ago) last weekend. They told him not to drive on it for 28 days! I know the concrete is supposed to reach it's rating in 28 days ie - 3000psi concrete takes 28 days to reach that rating, but to wait that long to drive on it seems rediculous. He has a Mustang in storage that weighs 3200lbs and I figured he'd be fine driving it across the driveway into the garage after a week of cure. Thoughts?

Good concrete is 90% cured after a week.
how thick is it?
Is it saw cut?
Has it been kept wet?
A lot of variables.

Why not just wait the 28 days? Chances are if you drive across it and it does crack then the blame will be on the Contractor.

I would do what they say. Sure it is 90% cured after 7 days but what about the rest? Why risk potential damage?

My guy asked for seven days for driving cars and not to actually park on it until 14. 28 days is to keep heavy contractor trucks from using it.

basically it like this, concrete is design to be 100% strength at 28 days, so if you drive on it before the 28 days and it cracks, its your nickle. if it cracks after the 28 days its the contractor nickel. so even if its 99.9% at seven days the contractor still has an out against damage, even if your car doesnt damage it, he off the hook before 28 days. it could crack for some other reason but since you drove on it before 28 days, he can blame the car

X2. Normal concrete reaches 70% of it's design strength in seven days. Leaving a little room for error, you will likely have a compressive strength of over 2000 psi with corresponding tensile and flexural strength gain.

At 2000 psi, the concrete has more than enough strength to resist being crushed. It is the sub-grade that is actually supporting the load of the car and if it isn't up to the task, you will have a problem in 28 or 128 days.

im certainly not an expert on concrete, but ill tell you this, about a year a go me and the next door house both had driveways poured by the same contractor, 4000 psi concrete, 4 inches thick same thing both places. the contractor said safe to park on it after 3 days, the folks next door was parking on it after 3 days, i went the safe route and waited a month. neither of the drives are cracked and broken. so what im saying is i dont really konw

I parked my Dodges on my driveway (4") the next day.

Still no cracks.

Around here, it's usually recommended to wait 7 days.

If you can keep it moist for the 28days it definitely helps the cure of the concrete. I was told a week was fine for cars, never had an issue, but I am anal about keeping it wet for the 28days.

You did the right thing. Post the question here and wait for at least 25 or 30 responses from our experts. By that time, the concrete is properly cured and it will work for you.

I would wait a week to drive on it and a month to park on it, a mustang only weighs 3200lbs its not a 1 ton truck. Besides concrete guarantees you 2 things, 1 its expensive and 2 someday it will crack.

My vote is wait as the contractor advised. Also maybe the ground under the concrete was not prepped right or not correct substrate ect so you want all the variables to be in your favor in it not cracking or worse.

If you paid a contractor for their experience and skill to build the concrete drive, take his advice and wait it out..If you gotta drive on some concrete put the car in reverse..LOL

Ever see them pour a concrete patch on the Interstate and let it cure for 28 days before letting traffic on it ??

Even at 1000 psi, the Mustang won't hurt it.

3500# car divided by 4 tires = 875#s/tire.

Divide 875 by the square inches of tread on the gound and figure out the ground pressure.

But I would let it wait at least 2 days before driving on it.

Wanted to get your thoughts on this. Just had a new driveway apron poured. It's about 24" wide. I really hate parking on the street for the next week. It's got a 3/4" lip on it on the street side.

What if I took a sheet of OSB nailed a 1X on the edge of it and used it to cover the concrete so I could drive across it? I figure this would protect the lip and also distribute the weight until it partially cured. The pour was just done yesterday so I'm thinking I'd wait 2 or 3 days before I even did that.
