i had the same problem when i build my house on 6.5 acres. the mice were not the worst of it...the mice attracted SNAKES.

So, my solution, we got 2 cats (outdoor), that fixed the problem.

There is someone who had a contraption with a bucket, a can and a ramp on here. The perfect mousetrap.

I used two of those sonic or audible devices that emits sounds that mice or rodents do not like. It worked for the garage, however, one placed under the cottage did not work 100%, but did reduce them where I'd only catch the odd one in my traps. This was usually only a problem in the fall when they are trying to find warmth. Those devices can be found at hardware stores etc. Add some poison or traps and your good to go. Prevention also is the key, such as good weatherstipping around the garage door etc.

I've heard guys pouring ammonia around the perimeter of their building.
I use moth balls inside - a small handful tied off in a piece of nylon stocking.

Havoc, Ramik, and Ropax are three that come to mind for me!

Get some peppermint oil and soak cotton balls with it and throw them around your house. Make sure to put them in the cabinets and in the corners.

I keep a RatZapper in my garage. It's easy, effective and works as advertised. It works with squirrels too.

That looks like a nifty unit, does it really work well? It looks like it might be just the thing to deal with our fat dormouse problem, they're very very clever and can happily take the bait of a standard rat trap without setting it off, occasionally one gets careless and gets caught but that looks like a better bet as they are very curious buggers and so if they get zapped on their way to the bait it'd work better. Battery operated makes it even handier as it needs to go in my roofspace.

bucket traps really work. Getting up to 4 mice a night.. used a 5 gallon bucket and big stirr stick for ramp. Just need a stripe of PB on the pop can and a few dots up the stick. Easy to make and very effective. Check youtube

Cats! If you don't feed them, they will take care of your rodent problems.

AND, they are a great diversion when you're working on something and getting frustrated and a cat walks up and licks your nose, it will completely change your outlook on the day.

OTOH, I have to keep all the trucks in the shop closed to keep them out as one of them will decide a client's truck is his litter box. It's not a big deal as keeping them closed is a good practice anyway.

I now have three ShopMoggies and I only bought one of them(purebred Siamese). The universe brought the rest of them to me.

Yes it works great. My neighbor was skeptical until I loaned mine to him for a squirrel in his crawlspace and it just took a few days to make a believer out of him.

Use the dry dog food pellets as they suggest for bait in the trap. It is very effective with no mess or smell.

P.S. If you're going to use it in an area like an attic you may want to consider the 'rat tail' accessory so you can see when you've caught something.

This, it works great. A little AntiFreeze in the water when it gets colder.
