I thought about that, but I didn't want it to possibly explode when crushed by the hydraulics in the trash truck.

Just make sure they're totally empty and put them in the normal trash.

I've never given disposing of them a second thought. I just put them in the bag with the regular household trash for the garbage man to throw in the truck. I think it doesn't seem proper to put it in the recycling bin even though it is a steel can.
I'm to frugal to throw one out if there is any propane left in it so if it could explode in any way it has no fuel in it.

About the same as an aerosol can, I think most places pull them out of the trash with a magnet and recycle them.

I take the scharder valve out and add them to the scrap metal pile. I can't think of any metal that goes into the trash around here.

I refill them at a cost of about $0.70 vs $3.50. When they start to get rusty I shoot them.

Scrap metal places won't take portable propane cylinders and it is the same with aerosol cans. There have been cases people injured running aerosol cans through the crusher, explosion happens.

I've tried that, but neither the local rental place or Ace have the necessary adaptor to refill them, so I've had to buy new.

I just made my own. Two female propane fittings and a valve in the middle. Cost about $20.

It's funny, I can get my 5# propane tanks filled at the gas station for less than buying a 16oz cylinder.

Try to get rid of a std. size one! Propane place wouldn't take it, metal recycling wouldn't take it, trash wouldn't take it (even with the valve out). Well, trash did end up taking it - after I stuffed it in a black trash bag.

Interesting theory - I've often wondered about refilling my BBQ tanks from the 100lb bottles for the heater in the shop. What's the method, do you just crack the valve and wait for the hissing to stop?
