Default Severe cracked, bleeding, dry hands, what do you use?

For some reason this winter my hands are taking more of a beating than years past. I have been using fast absorbing neutrogena at least once a day but its still a losing battle and here a few minutes ago while typing an email the side of my index finger cracked open and started to bleed. So i am looking for what others are using to help their hands out. Thanks

any of the thick lotions work. If you use utter balm, put it on at night after a shower, that is when your hands have the most moisture, Wear white cotten gloves to sleep, that is so that the balms oils can get in your skin and you can keep it from getting everywhere. Wear work gloves designed for the job your doing. and dont use super hot water. Also dont forget to chase the wife around when wearing the white gloves making mickey mouse voices.

You might try a little Polysporin (not the more popular Neosporin) on the open sores. It does contain antibiotics and it keeps the sores from scabbing. Once you get bleeding and scabbing, it just bleeds every time you break the scab. So, the theory is heal it soft. You have to deep these areas clean and bandaged until healed.

Use the creams to prevent drying and breaking.

I started having the problems when we had the kids.. The disinfecting wipes when changing the babies were the culprits, and so are the disinfectant lotion pumps that are in the hospitals (and everywhere else since that flu epidemic a few years back). One time going into a local hospital the security guy was checking everyone to make sure they all disinfected their hands, and he couldn't understand why I declined it, until I showed him my hands.

My hands have been nice since I stopped disinfecting them all the time and use softer soaps. I tried using rubber gloves for kids bath time but the moisture was kept inside so it was no use.

Basically your hands need to self generate a layer of oil but if you take that layer off all the time your skin gets damaged. Bad car analogy: it's like driving around without putty any protective wax on your vehicle... The paint will damage faster, even by just looking at it

You might try just covering them in vasoline. Use gloves or socks at night to keep from ruining sheets. Just a couple of days and you will see a big difference. And use gloves at work and don't wash with strong solvents or really hot water.

Plus one for Utter Ointment and I've had amazing results using Shea Butter. Many Drug Stores carry it as well as local Beauty Shop Supply businesses.

Make sure you get pure Shea Butter - not something that says it "contains" shea butter. Your skin will soak it up quickly and respond within a couple days.

FWIW,

The pad of my left thumb was like that for years, and I believe was caused by a skin fungus. Applying vinegar for six weeks (the time it takes for skin to completely regenerate) cured it entirely, as fungus can't reproduce in acid conditions.

There are a number of factors that can contribute to this and most have been pointed-out. Dishydrosis is 'dry skin' and can be caused by a combination of the removal of oils that retain moisture in the skin and the skin's reaction to the world without an effective protective barrier.

How often you wash your hands is less important than whether or not the soap is pH balanced and whether there are oils in the soaps. I wash my hands over 100 times a day and with the right soaps, this is do-able without problems.

Wearing gloves protects the skin from dusts and chemicals that will change the pH on the skin and that will actually absorbe whatever oils remain on the skin. Think working with cement or masonry supplies.

Your particular immune system also will affect the outcome. Eczemas and other rash-like eruptions can be produced by your immune response to an assault on your skin, thereby exacerbating the situation. This is an inflammatory response and sometimes needs an antiinflammatory approach.

Someone mentioned fungal infections and that is right on as well and will produce a skin layer amenable to secondary problems like dry, cracking, skin.

pH balanced soap, using skin protection when working, using moisturizers, and eliminating insults and dealing with those that occur will help immensely. However, if there is dryness, cracking, bleeding, etc., under "normal" use, this sounds like an extreem response and you may need a topical steroid to help tame the inflammation. Ask your pcp next time you have a medical visit.

+1 on the vaseline at night. Slather on a bunch of vaseline and sleep with your hands in a clean, white sock, to keep from getting vaseline all over everything.

The other issue is HYDRATION. The BEST way to get 'water' back in your hands is 'from the inside.' When I was in the desert at 130 degrees, we drank an incredible amount of water each day, just to keep up with the losses each day. This really isn't too different...you are still losing a LOT of water each day, even if it is cold outside...simply because the air is so much dryer and it is pulling water out of your skin at a faster rate.

So, you should be drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day (64 ounces, 2 quarts) on a 'normal day. On 'dry' days, you should be drinking even more than that.

My kids swear by some stuff called gloves in a bottle. It's pricey but, works good. I got a sample of some cream called Stokolan at the AAPEX show and it is the best thing I've found to date for my hands that are exposed to everything from breakclean to ATF on a daily basis.

I make my own from Lanolin, Bees wax, Vitamin E and mineral oil. Works great. I originally made the formula for Baseball glove conditioning and found it was great for my hands.

If you're already using Neutrogena and it isn't working you might get a tub of straight shea butter if you can find it. You could also try Zim's Crack Cream (yeah that's an actual product).

I use this -> http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/vi...oconut_oil.htm
Tropical Traditions Gold coconut oil
I put it on my hands before bedtime. It keeps them from cracking, works great, and smells good! I also eat some of it before meals, it tastes great. I get in the gallon tubs. It works great on knees and elbows too. I actually also use it as a deodorant.

Sometimes I get a few small dime size areas that still get sore even with the coconut oil. For those I use triamcinolone acetonide ointment (prescription).

When the skin cracks it burns to use any lotion. I play guitar and my fingertips crack during the winter. I have discovered that using liquid bandage to seal the cut closed for a couple of days works wonders. The pain is no longer there and the cuts heal. You don't want to put it in an open cut, it will burn. I pinch the cut closed then apply a layer, let it dry and repeat a few times. The pain from reopening the crack goes away if you do a good job sealing it.

Had / Have the same problem and even went to dermitologist (sp). Cost a bunch of money to find out petroleum jelly and the cotton gauze gloves. Just like above Slather it on before bedtime and cover with gloves to keep from getting it all over bed clothes. Also do the dishes for a week straight it will help emensly.

I haven't tried the stuff at Lowes yet. But I have used most of the others. I wear gloves as much as possible, expecially in winter. X2 especially if I'm handling lumber. And so far, regular Vaseline is the only thing that shows some improvement in a couple of days. It probably has much to do with your body chemistry as other conditions.

Eucerin lotion when I feel I need it. If my fingertips crack, I will daub them with vaseline at night. If you use hand cleaner a lot, keep a bar of Dove moisturizing bath soap next to it, and finish washing your hands with that. If your hands are not overly greasy, just use the soap with a brush rather than the hand cleaner. The "orange" hand cleaners seem to be the worst for drying out skin when used a lot. Also, using hand cleaner without water is tough on skin. If you have a sink nearby, rinse with water afterward even if you just wipe off the hand cleaner.

like others said, wear leather work gloves.(or rubber gloves if youre getting oily) they are weird to get used to at first, but once you break the gloves in and you get used to it, its so much nicer! also, you might want to try a soup with moisturizer in it ad is less harsh.

I use the neutrogena norwegian hand formula which is super concentrated. But I only remember to use it when things start bleeding, which is too late. I should take heed of my wife's constant advice to "lotion daily".

bag balm seems popular around me, but it comes down to my laziness. I can also guarantee that the combo of a cpap mask and white gloves at night would result in sleeping on the couch

i live in south lake tahoe and do a lot of ceramics and metal work. i would get cracked and bleeding knuckles from the dry and cold so i ended up making my own stuff from beeswax (my mom is a beekeeper) and jajoba oil. it works great. i keep it in a stripped snuz tin in my pocket and hav gotten in the habit of applying it a few times a day. use it as pomade and chapstick too! http://thatcherworks.blogspot.com/search/label/wax

I used to coat my hands in vaseline at night, then wear gloves to bed.

Handcleaner containing lanolin, every time you wash up you are moisturizing. Works great.

Pure cocoa butter works really really well. You can get a stick of it on amazon for around $5

Bag Balm, then go to bed with socks over your hands. It doesn't seem to soften my hands much, but the Balm sure takes the hurt out of the cracks.

Krazy glue for the cracks on my thumbs. Stops the pain almost instantly. O'Keeffe's working hand and corn huskers lotion also work for me.

Haven't tried the O'Keeffe's or the Bag Balm, although I've heard good things. Unlike others, I have tried the vaseline slather at night and sleep with hands in socks...this didn't seem to help me as much, but maybe I gave it up too early (less than a week).

I have recently found Corn Husker's Lotion at Wal Mart - less than $3 per bottle, and it's awesome. Soaks in within 2 minutes completely and is not greasy. Leaves hands feeling nice and "useable" after treatment.

Lubriderm for normal to dry skin, unscented is pretty good for more treatment. It soaks in pretty well, but is more greasy than the corn huskers' and much more pricey.

+++Corn Husker's Lotion. Wear mechanic's gloves or leather gloves and avoid stripping the oils out of your hands with harsh detergents, chemicals, soaps, and solvents. The nitrile and plastic gloves are great for keeping your hands clean but the buildup of moisture inside the gloves seems to have a deleterious effect on the skin.

Any cheap hand cream works for me. Vasoline intensive care? $3 a tube. If you want to get spendy Aveda has one of the best non-greasy formulas, believe in their mens line.

My girlfriend has every Bath and Body Works hand cream ever made, when I couldn't find anything this year I started using it... it seems to have absolutely no "hand lotion" effect, its more like rubbing yourself with highly expensive cream-based perfume. What a ripoff.

If it flares into eczema you have to get hydrocortisone, or even a hydrocortisone shot.

Well everybody, I'm glad I saw this. I've been in the closet for years over it. I thought I was the only using lotions and creams, gloves at night; sneaking around wondering if anyone will smell that fragrance on my hands. It's been a burden.

Now I'm free and proud to be me!!

Seriously, though, my knuckles have been bleeding in the winter for a while now. I started using lotion as much as possible. And I wear gloves right when the weather gets chilly. I just started using Corn Huskers and it seems to work well. Also, real Shea Butter is good.

As for vaseline, though, I've read many times that it works as a lubricant and barrier, but it actually leeches moisture out of your skin, so I don't use it.

Keeping your hands good will also keep your ladyfriend happy.

BadgerBalm from the health food store. It's made of olive oil, beeswax, castor oil, aloevera and birch oil. The ingrediants sound close to some of the home made ones mentioned ealier.

My wife keeps a shaker jar of olive oil by the stove. A few years back I got tired of my hands cracking and rubbed some of the olive oil into them after washing dishes. Wiped the excess off with a paper towel. Anytime my hands feel dry I just rub some olive oil on them. no more problems.

3m makes a product called Nexcare Skin Crack Care. This stuff is the bomb for up to 1/2 inch cracks that don't heal. Put in on with the little brush a couple of times for 2 or 3 days. It seems to thicken the skin around the crack and makes the skin flex in a different place. I'm a auto tech and I wash my hands a lot during the day, so putting something greasy on all the time won't cut it for me. This stuff is the best!

Smile Re: Severe cracked, bleeding, dry hands, what do you use?

OK y'all. I have been battling this for the last 7 years! I have dry cracked bleeding hands on knuckles and fingers and all over the hands. I have been to see doctors both traditional and homeopathic. I have a healthy respect for both. They have helped me get to this point today.

My hands began cracking and bleeding after my first pregnancy. I have had eczema from 2yrs old and I turned to the dermatologists. I tried all the lotions, creams, steriods, and a host of others. I tried gloves at night. Socks all day. Everything. Nothing worked. I began to look at homeopathic options. I learned that this is something from the inside manifesting itself on the outside. The problem was in the gut.

More specifically, I think it is in my liver. The liver is an awesome part of the body that is in charge of minerals, vitamins, and toxins. I began researching how to get more vitamins to the liver. I knew now that my liver for some reason wasn't able to get the job done, and short of opening me up to take a look, I was as sure as I could be this was the source of my problem with my hands.

I purchased a juicer and drank a glass in the morning and night - beets were on my top ingredient list. I began on Wednesday. It is now Sunday evening and I am typing without any pain in my hands. The cracks are healing (HEALING!!) and the redness and swelling is disappearing. (YES!!) I still have some blisters in my palm, so we will see if juicing can take that away too, but really - in a few days I have had more success and healing than I have found in all the doctors and all the creams and all the antibiotics and all that I have tried over the last 7 years. HOORAY!!! I am so excited to share this news - maybe you already know and it just took me extra long to figure it out. But I am totally excited anyway. FINALLY - relief and healing I have been looking for.

Hope this helps anyone out there who also has those dry cracked and bleeding hands!

I lie it better than everything else I've tried because it doesn't leave your hands greasy feeling. If anything, it's more of a waxy feeling. Also has NO odor what so ever.

I suffer from this when it's really cold and dry. If you can get a jar of pure lanolin it is the best stuff out there, mother nature knows her stuff. If you ever meet a professional sheperd they have the softest hands just from handling sheep and getting the natural lanolin on them all day.

+++1 The O'Keeffe's "Working Hands" cream from Lowes is absolutely the best I've found and I've tried many, many different products.

Lanolin (from sheep's wool) is great too, but it's too greasy for day in and day out use and has a fairly strong scent of sheep, although since my dad raised sheep I've always found the scent nostalgic.

Homeopathy is not a nutritional solution, it is a nothing solution. Quite literally, it is based on serial dilution to the point that the active ingredient is at a next to zero concentration. That the good waves of what used to be in the dilution with make you better. It amazes me people can charge for that kind of hocus-pocus. The principal is fantasy at best, quackery at worst, and nothing to do with your smoothie or your hands.

I'm highly skeptical that drinking beet juice is going to moisten anyone's hands but what you're talking about is a nutritional solution which may have merit for a lot of us who eat garbage. I think most of us could stand to just drink much more water which would help some of the underlying dehydration involved with chapped hands.

I think the OP was looking for product advise though. So if someone is looking for a organic solution:

Burts Bees Lemon butter cuticle cream (lemon oil, cocoa butter, beeswax)

I have a friend who's brother is a very well respected Dermatologist. Has a large practice and does a lot of work at a large university on special patients. When my friend's brother the Dr. seen my friend using CH lotion he started laughing. He said it was not a very good product for what it's advertised to do. Can't remember the reason but I'll try to find out and report back. Sorry! Not trying to start and argument if CH works for you continue to use the product.

I didn't read all the responses but you need to check out goat milk body soap. Use it when you shower. Used to have this same problem and this helps immensely

Milton's got it right! I've tried just about every product available. Good old vasoline works best for me.

I usually just use "hydrocortizone" because I get it cheap. Otherwise just whatever I have in the garage. It doesn't get that cold here. I don't mean hand lotion, I mean motor oil, grease, marine oil, etc. Makes no difference to me.

Someone else mentioned super glue for cracks/cuts...I use the liquid band-aid stuff that you apply with the little brush. One bottle has lasted me years. I use it all the time whenever I get a cut. It seals it right up and helps it heal fast.

Then after a shower and at night, I use Burt's Bees hand salve. I've been wanting to try O'Keeffe's and think I will now after reading so many people suggest it!

I was given some size small rubber gloves to use for garage work. I can only get them on easily when my hands are cold and perfectly dry (which isn't often). So I tried putting lotion on just the tips of my fingers and then putting on the gloves - works like a charm! May have to try the same thing at night for some super relief!

Bagbalm works wonders, but a month at the beach in Thailand is a sure cure. I'll write to a prescription to Phuket if you want.

I didn't read through everything, but I know what cracked fingers feel like. Mine used to crack all the time when I was working on Press Dies. In the tool-room we were stocking Fast Orange soap or hand-cleaner. I started bringing a bar of soap to work, but it wouldn't cut the heavy grease so I ordered some Boraxo, and believe it or not, as rough as the Boraxo was, it cut the grease but was not rough on my hands. I also stocked Bear Paw, which is like Boraxo in a lanolin base maybe, and it was better than Boraxo.
When my thumbs and fingers would crack, some were around the fingernails, but the most painful was my pointing finger and mainly my thumbs on the ends. It felt just like someone ran a razor blade through the ends. I kept Neo Sporin in my toolbox and also at home. During the day when working on dies, I would load up my finger tips and around the nails with Neo and wear nitrile gloves, and at night it was Neo and a few band-aids. In 2-3 days time they would be completely healed. I haven't had any cracked fingertips in maybe five years except one time here at home and I was using GoJo. They cracked open in a couple days of using it.

So now, I keep a container of Bear Paw at the garage sink and I swear by it. It will take all of the grease out of my hands and will not dry my hands out to where they will crack.

One thing about having cracks around your nails or fingertips....You don't realize how much you use those fingers until they are cracked. Then you somehow manage to hit the end or snag it on your pocket t seems like every couple of minutes.

Just be sure you don't have a latex allergy. I have to use nitrile gloves or else the skin on my hands bubbles up. Painful!!!

I use Pinerite hand soap. Cleans better than any other cleaner I have tried and is a cool product. Visit their website www.pinerite.com and check it out. You won't believe it until you try it.

My hands can't take using any orange based hand cleaner anymore. Totally dries them out.

Zep Cherry bomb, works best for me. Cleans great and has lots of moisturizer.

I also keep a tube of Nivea hand cream close by. It has macadamia nut oil and rubs into the skin quickly and doesn't leave you feeling greasy.

plant some aloe outside the shop, you don't need to look after it ,as it's maintenance free, but don't let it dry out too much in summer. When you get a burn it instantly stops the pain .It works great on Chilblains etc.I just snap off a bit of a leaf and rub the sap on the skin .

We've lately been having good luck with coconut oil. easy to get, cost is reasonable and is about as natural as it gets with no nasty side effects. It just rubs in w/o any greasy residue.

All good suggestions. Only thing I have to add is at work we need dexterity and do not always wear gloves. I use PR88. Provides an invisible barrier, so when you wash your hands you are not washing away your hands natural oil barrier but the glycerin layer you put on. Also I find it helps my hands keep their moisture through out the day. I have never tried any other product in this category.
