Default Anyone here into restoring old garden tractors ?

I have bitten by the GT bug, it first started out with a 1964 Montgomery Wards "Garden Mark 10", 1980 JD 212, then by a 63 Simplicity 725, 1968 Sears Suburban 10, 1968 Cub Cadet 105 Hydro and my Favorite out of the bunch a 1961 Cub Cadet "Original".

I haven't started the restos yet but they are planned through the winter months and next summer. Boy it's fun riding around, mowing, snowblowing, tilling etc. on these vintage machines.

Sweet, I would love to find one of them, but lately up here when scrap metal prices went up, alot of the good old stuff got scraped. We travel the backroads looking for anything that resembles at GT in our free time.

Did this JD last winter. Put it on craigs list and got my price. Never used it and kind of regret it now.

Is that the '80 JD 212 in the pic ? Does that have a Kohler motor ?

I have an '88 316 that I bought new. It has the 18hp Onan & hydro trans. I'd like to redo it someday.
I belong to the site: (www.yesterdaystractors.com) Alot of cool pics & info there.

This is what they look like when you leave them sit outside. 750hrs. no issues, just ugly.

When I was a Kid, My Grand-dad had a lawn mower shop in Central Texas (Rising Star). He was a tractor mechanic in His real job, worked on mowers at home in the evening. People would bring their riders to Him for miles around. My first gift from Him was a 3 hp Briggs and Stratton motor to re-build. Anyway, I always had at least two, or three riders to ride around their large yard, and I must have had a hundred miles under My belt, by the time I was 8 or 9.

I keep saying I'm going to rescue my Dad's old Allis-Chalmers Big 10 garden tractor from the back of my sister's garage and restore it one of these days. It's pretty similar to the Simplicity in the first post, but I think it's from about 1966.

Got a JD318 that I went through. The Onan died and parts are $$$$ so now it's got a Kohler. Great mower! Now I need some implements!

I have my great-grandmother's '69 Sears Custom 10xl. Still running strong. Thought about restoring it but don't want to tear it apart.

Got a 75 wheel horse I plan to redo next year, got quite a few of the original attachments for it too. Don't have room for a bunch of Gt's they'd be sitting outside, and then what's the point of restoring?

Looks like you have quite a few to get started with. There is a guy on youtube, 500passwords that has a video series redoing a WH and a Cub Cadet ... Nice way to kill some time.

Edit:
Link to 500passwords Youtube Page
Looks like he's started on a pedal car now

i'd like to come across an old heavy duty garden tractor but they're very rare in these parts. when they do pop up for sale they're already restored and the person wants a sh*t load of money for it or they're not restored and the person wants a sh*t load of money for it.

i have a 98 mtd 800 series. not exactly an old garden tractor. its a light duty garden tractor, or a heavy lawn mower. i need to do some engine work. and the stamped steel front axle is shot. i can buy a new cast iron axle for it but mtd wants $200 for it. the mower isn't worth that.
