Default Creative things to do with railroad spikes?

Just wondering what creative ideas people have come up with to make out of such a relatively common item...

I've seen people whom forge knives/mini hatchets out of them, twisting the handles (these can be found on eBay for sale,) I must admit, I like their style.

My neighbor made a sort of weighted 'tilling plate' that could hitch up to his tractor and be pulled behind him to loosen up the soil. It was a heavy sheet of steel with the spikes welded in a odd-even-odd matrix.

For my finished patio kitchen, I plan on using a few of them as 'hooks' to hold tongs, shish kabob skewers, etc.

Anybody have any other ideas on what to do with 'em?

Here is a neat idea for hanging coats or anything else (you could also bend them the other way):

Is that one of yours?

My plan on the kitchen (the framework is wood) was to drill out holes and not bother bending the spikes, but I'm really liking the character those hooks have...

Grandad would weld a spike to short 2-3"? sections of rail to make bookends. He gave them away as retirement gifts.

Now a days the rail road prosecutes those in possession of anything RR to the fullest extent of the law. Can't even sell them to scrap yards, they won't take them....considered stolen property. Be careful where you get them.

Here RR spikes are a thing of the past. All ribbon rail, concrete ties and rails are bolted down. Do have a bucket of them in the barn somewhere.

I have a box full of railroad spikes. Always wanted to make twisted handle knives out of them.

Someday....

I have one that I ground down and made a punch out of. You can strike the end pretty easily and they can be ground into whatever shape you want or need.

I have a side business making and selling salt/pepper/napkin holders out of old RR spikes, horse shoes, washers etc. At first I was buying spikes on Ebay.

Then the RR was replacing the wood ties with concrete ones. They had a huge pile of old spikes and I asked them what they were going to do with them and the guys reply was "Fill up your truck with them".

They gave me two 5 gallon buckets of used spikes!

Used Horse shoes are everywhere and I get those given to me also.

I sold 40 of these in the 2 weeks before X-Mas last year. I could have sold more if I had more made. I have them for sale at my work as well as a couple of nic-nac shops in town.

I paint them a few different colors. Hammered Grey sells the best. I get $25ea.

I remember the RR track thread, and the discussion it spawned...

Should the RR ever question acquisition, what would a valid defense be? Would saying "found 'em in a box in a barn" hold any water?

No issue here either.

So long as you're not pulling them outta the tracks

+1 Back when i was trucking i would take a load of green RR ties to a yard by the tracks about twice a week,When they came through redoing the track they had a huge crate filled with the old plates and spikes just sitting there.I asked around and finally got ahold of someone in charge at the railroad and they sent me a letter stating that they were junk and now belonged to me! Next time i went up there i had the tie yard lift driver load up everything i had papers for and took them straight to the scrap yard. They copied my letter for their records and paid me for almost 8000lbs of short iron! Made for a nice payday that week

There's a blacksmith shop in town that makes all sorts of strange stuff out of them. Steak flippers for example.

Just for fun, I reached into the bucket and picked out a random spike last night. Gave it a whirl on 40 grit, then graduating to 120 on the 1x30" sander:

Followed it with some brown buffing compound on a 6" wheel:

Since then, I gave it another shot or two with the sanding belts, and it's awaiting another polishing. I'll post more pics soon.

Again, this is just a test - just to see how a raw sample comes out with no other machining...

Do a search for "Railroad Spike Art" and there are a multitude of different things. Some are really cool.
