Default Best way to attach wood board to concrete wall?

I need to attach a 3ft length of 2x4, vertically, to the outside of the poured
concrete foundation of the house. This will be to anchor a post and block
off a space.

What is the best way to do it? Thanks.

I've used Tapcons for stuff like this. Construction adhesive would also work if properly prepared. Generally I do both, glue and screw.

You can use an adhesive like PL400 (or whatever the proper one would be), or use a mechanical fastener such as the .22 cal driven ones.

depending on how much force will be applied the most lasting approach are the "red-head" type fasteners for me at least. It maybe user error on my part but I have issues with the tapcons, I have the drill bits and drivers for them but still get the blow outs. this is in a thread somewhere on here. If it is a low strength install the PL and a few hilti shots is a faster/easier option and you get to shoot the gun!

How strong does it need to be?
On the outside, huh? If you're using pressure treated, forget about tapcons, or nails (I haven't seen galvanized red-heads, maybe look into this). ACS pressure treated requires galvanized fasteners. If you can drill the concrete, I'd put in an expanding insert, and use galvanized bolts (or a lead shield, with a galvanized lag bolt, but that's something I'd reserve for a "softer" material like brick; not with poured concrete)
Adhesive underneath is a good idea in addition.

"outside" + "wood" + "concrete" = PT wood

Which means stainless fasteners or hot-dipped galvanized (or equivalent).

Use the 'appropriate' fastener.

Speaking of 'appropriate', is a 2x4 on an exterior concrete wall 'appropriate' to "anchor" your structure? Including the wall itself, and the block to the wall, and whatever is attaching the block to the post or whatever? Just more stuff to check on.

Agree with all the above except with using tapcons. I never have much luck with them either, so I stopped wasting money on them. I don't think 'strong' when I think tapcon. You can get galvy red heads, I have in the past at Lowes and used them with pressure treated wood. Just make sure to get them long enough to get the minimum depth in the concrete + 2x + washer and nut.

Lag screws into expanding anchors is the old tried and true way.

Stainless Steel tapcons are available. Drill the holes in the 2 x 4 oversize to allow for some expansion and contraction. Adhesive helps too. Red heads, expansion shields, lead anchors and those other methods are also good. The best method may be what you have on hand and feel comfortable with! Hope this helps.

Powder actuated fasteners. Just used a bunch to install 2x3's for shelving in a basement room.

what's on the other side of the wall? Is it accessible? If so, rotohammer clear through and put a galvanized bolt top and bottom. Done

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I am leaning towards a red head or a 2 piece lag screw type anchor.

To drill the hole, do I need a hammer drill, or can I use a corded 1/2" drill
with a carbide tipped masonry bit? I need to drill only 4 holes.

hammer drill definitely makes it go faster, but a good corded drill should be able to do it as well with the appropriate concrete bit.

masonry bits are not always strong enough for use on concrete, so confirm with the bit's mfg/packaging prior.

I prefer expanding anchors for anything into bricks/mansonry. I want to try the chemical anchors that I see in stores lately.

Try to get a hammerdrill. You will end up with a better hole. Ihave used both the tapcons and expanding anchors and in my experience the hammerdrill helps immensely and if the concrete is of poor quality neither will hold. A good hole round hole has been the key IMHO.

I've had good luck with tapcons.

A hammerdrill will make the holes super easy. A regular drill can suffice, but will take a lot longer to drill the holes. I would go with expanding anchors and hot dip galvanized log screw fasteners myself.

Tapcons screws are made for screwing into concrete and brick in a masonary situation and should do the trick!
