I got a big ol hunk of steel out of a header from a job I'm doing. It measures 16'x11"x1/2 thick. It takes 3 men to carry it or 2 if you wanna drop your balls off on the ground. I was thinking of cutting 11" out of the front of my work benches (3/4 plywood) and putting the steel there in place? IDK? any ideas, besides scrapping it?

I just hate to scrap it to China and have it come back as some Mac tools or anything for that matter

I like the idea of making it the front edge of the bench. After all that covers the area that you're usually smashing stuff on. It seems like the 80/20 rule equivalent of complete steel plate workbench.

That bar should weigh about 230 Lb. , I'd cut in half and spray it with WD-40 stick out behind the shop until I needed it. It's not going to get you much as scrap but you'll pay a lot for it if you need it.

Would you be in the need for a welding table? If so cut it into 3' sections and put three of them next to each other to form the table top. Not sure how great a table it will make but hey, its a table!
Or cut it into a few smaller pieces and use them for weight on vehicles in the snow and if nothing else, cut it up and try to sell it on flea-bay.

I vote for welding table...build a frame out of angle iron, use a strip of that as the front edge of the table and a strip of that as the back edge of the table. Fill in the rest of the table with MDF (build the framework so it is flush with the metal pieces), then weld a bolt on the table leg, to use as a ground attachment. That way, whatever you rest on the table is automatically grounded.

Try to sell it on Craigs List to a contractor/homeowner for what it was intended.

Either here on the G.J or on the Welding Web someone used some I -beam to make saw horses. Seems like a good idea. Could be used as an expandable welding platform. I think drilling a few holes and tapping them would be pretty handy too.
Mounting a vise would be an option also. |

I have no idea but I wouldn't want to see it get scrapped.

This was the first thing I thought of for some reason:
Untitled.jpg (original thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...t=88034&page=2) Its something that A_PMech made to move a rotary table. Obviously you don't need one of these but it shows the kind of things you can do with that material. What type of equipment do you have? band saw? milling machine? welder? |
