Default Oil consumption in 2012 Camry?

It was posted on here somewhere about 2007 Camrys using oil. How about the 2012s? We are thinking of getting one and wonder about oil use. The 2005 with 150k miles dosen't use oil. Thanks.

I can tell you the 2007 is an oil guzzler for sure, because I own one. And, I heard (on this foum), that the 2009 was as well. I'm toyota gun shy now, as they are even bold enough to say it is normal, and publish it in the owners manual. If I were you, I would google the 2012, and see.

Wait, I thought that Toyota made perfect cars? How much oil does your Camry use?

According to what I've read, newer cars are running leaner and exhaust gas recirculation is getting increased in an effort to reduce emissions and increase mileage. Both of these actions raise combustion temperatures significantly, which cooks the oil and causes oil sludge.

EDIT: OK, EGR actually reduces combustion temperature, but I think it's true that engines today are hotter than they used to be.

The sludge basically gums everything up, resulting in small internal leaks and increased oil consumption. The amount of consumption is going to depend on how aggressive the engineers were in increasing combustion temperatures, as well as what they did to mitigate the sludge issues.

From page 291 of my 2007 owners manual:

"Maximum exceptable oil consumtion is 1.1 quart per 600 miles"

Back to Honda I guess!

Not to Hyjack your thread "KEH", but my dad used "Marvel Mystery Oil" in everything including his corn flakes (I think)! Lol I think I will give it a try, as I have nothing to lose at this point. If that don't work, there is always castrol 50 weight racing oil, and a can of STP, like I used in my 74 bronco many years ago.

It's not a problem with my 2007 Camry hybrid. I change the oil in it every 8000 km & it's down maybe 1/2 a ltr. each time. I use Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 full synthetic & have ever since its first oil change. It's sitting at apx. 140000km right now. I also think the Hybrid has a different 4cyl motor than the regular model.
The Hybrids are made in Japan whereas the regular Camrys are made in North America. I don't know if that makes any difference or not but my last Camry was an early model 92 which was also a made in Japan car (the later models were all made in North America) & it went for 15 years without a major problem.

I guess I got my drink of Toyota kool-aid from the "good batch"!

late 80's-mid 90's corollas and camrys were great cars! thank god they rarely broke because messing with the vacuum lines on carbed corolla would be a nightmare

thinner oil isnt helping either coupled with low tension piston rings to decrease friction (and sealing) in the bore.

Interesting perspective coming from "GOLF FOR LIVE" and a VW avatar . Who's drinking what? Toyota still makes a reliable vehicle, the engine is just one part and if it just needs to be topped up with oil and thats the only problem you have i think you're doing pretty good still.

I've owned 12 Toyotas since 1982 and none of them used oil between 5000 mile oil change intervals. Currently have an '03 Camry 4 cyl with 130k on it, an '04 Tundra V8 and a 2011 Camry V6. No oil consumption on any of them.

Regards,
A happy kool aid drinker.

I guess I own an odd-ball Camry, because my 2007 has never consumed a drop of oil in its 54,000 miles and I've always run the factory recommended 0-20 oil (Mobil-1) in it...
It's a 2.5L 4 cylinder if that makes any difference...

Thats the engine that has the issue. Seems to start around 60-70k. If you've been ignoring the 5000mi oil change interval in favor of a 3k i'd say you're in good shape, otherwise good luck.

Pretty much any engine you can think of has oil consumption complaints if you find a forum for it. Doesn't make it right, but is hardly a Toyota-only problem.

As was said, thinner oils and lower ring tensions make it tougher to build engines with zero oil consumption.

my current vehicles:99 4Runner(3.4L V6 188k miles), 04 4Runner(4.0L V6 155k miles), 5000 mile oil change with Mobil1 synthetic 5-30W. no noticeable oil consumption. I also have a newly acquired 92 Corolla(1.6L 4cy 184k miles), so far I drove 3000 miles, oil level is still at full as when I changed it.

all the VIN's start with letter J, maybe that's the reason.

I have the current gen accord.. I am at 1 quart every 1k.. 140k miles. 2009 4cyl 5 speed manual lx-p

Early 1990s to early 2000 was the prime for imports. (Honda/Toyota) IMO... I drive 40k+ miles a year so I go though cars.. I am unsure what my next car will be..
