Default Can a car pass emissions with the check engine light on?

I have a 2002 jeep liberty that is coming up for emissions testing in ct. The problem is that the check engine light just started coming on. I checked the code and it came up as a problem with the torque. Inverter lockup solenoid. I will eventually try to fix it but need to know if it has to be done before emission testing. Is a check engine light an automatic fail even if it has nothing to do with emissions?

In MA it is a fail if the car is gasoline and OBD2, a Diesel only has to pass the opacity test and any thing older than a 95 is safety only. So to answer your question, no yes

Exactly. In NY, there are a handful of codes that would cause you to fail the inspection. I do not believe anyone around here will even attempt an inspection if the light is on though, even if your code may not be one that causes a failure.

In Ca, the law states that we have to run the test and fail it. Every once in a while you get the guy who wants to argue about paying "You knew it would fail, why are you charging me?" "The law says, you ask for a test, I give you a test, why did you bring it in with the light on?"

Any MIL light in NC is a fail.

I love to get the ones with MIL on with P1870 tranny code on GMs

If they've got enough $CASH$ in their pocket, I'll take the work as a side job and get them through inspection.

In Connecticut they plug into the OBDII port for the emissions test, if the light is on it fails. I don't think they differenciate between a true emissions reason for the light against something that isn't. My father's 2000 Saturn had the light on for a non-emissions problem and had to be fixed before the test. He took it to one of the local independant shops and had them fix it and then run it right through the test.

You can always stop by one of the emissions test shops and ask them first about your specific reason for the light.

Splice it into your oil pressure sending unit. Key on light on like it should be. Start and it goes out

In PA there are different requirements for different counties. My county only requires a visual inspection to confirm that all OE emissions equipment is installed, no test to confirm it works. A CEL is not cause for emissions failure here, but it is in some other counties.

As with most things the government is involved in confusion is the name of the game.

Automatic fail in CT if the light is on. If you remove the bulb its an auto fail if the light does not come on and then shut off for a self test.

OBD2 vehicles just get plugged in. No sniffer test.

In Metro Atlanta light = immediate fail

Diesels, cars older then 25 and anyone outside the "metro atlanta counties" do not have to test. Also if you fail 3 times and show that you attempted to get it repaired then you pass that year.

No safety inspections, even though we need them.

Get a scanner that can clear codes pull up to your emissions place clear the code leave it running tell them to inspect it but to under no circumstance shut it off cause your alarm is malfunctioning and it may not restart. Unless the check for stored or old codes you should be good. I did the same with evap solenoid and evap emissions codes and I passed

it can pass emissions but you'll likely fail for having a check engine light.

That won't work if they plug in to the obd2 connector, one of the things that they look for is passing most of the readines monitor self tests. The old wire the cel to the oil pressure gauge trick won't work on newer cars either, it usually isn't a discrete circuit with a bulb, rather it's tied into the ipc module and triggered by a class2 signal. Sorry to be such a Debby Downer, but it's usually easier to fix the car than beat the system nowadays.

In Missouri, they don't do an emissions test. Just a visual safety check every 2 years. The check engine light is always on in my '98 Pontiac. I just tape a wallet size pic of my wife over it. Nobody's noticed the light...yet.

Here they shut the car off and restart it before every test.
