Default Elio Motors...for real or no $6.4K three wheeled "car"?

Good afternoon all,

Clicking through the popular mechanics website I saw a blurb on a guy who's planning on making three wheeled "cars" with tandem seating for two and a 70horse engine that would actually work on the highway for $6400.

www.eliomotors.com

What say you forum? Is this for real, or is this guy out of his tree?

Love the concept and I get that he's claiming it's a car when it suits him but a bike when it comes to regulation. Supposedly production starts in Louisiana in the summer of 2014.

To be honest I do to, but he needs the rules to be bent to skip the car regulations (it's a motorcycle!), but not run into helmet laws (it's a car!). I guess the take rate would plummet if people had to wear helmets, even though in NH we don't have a helmet law.

Also, 5 star safety rating? Really?

They're making them in the old GM Shreveport, LA plant. Former home of the H3, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

That's right, in June 2014...I'm sure not going to put a deposit down, though I guess 13K people did, but it would be so cool if this is legit.

I hope he succeeds, but I doubt he will.

I think "microcars" like this should have lax regulations. After all, it's still a lot safer than a motorcycle, and we let people ride those.

The car industry just has so many regulations, it's almost a quasi-government agency. And we're such a litigious society, the first person that gets killed in one and they'll probably sue and put the guy out of business.

Yes, he will need laws rewritten to produce these things, no two ways about it. If it's a bike = helmets which would hurt sales, if car = regulation.

So, to the busines experts, will these things get built?

Everyone else, would you buy one? I would, looks fun. Wife might disagree.

Louisiana just passed a law that that exempts "motorcycles" with rollover protection from the helmet law.

I live about 50 miles from there and am keeping tabs.

Now if it was not so ugly!

That looks pretty cool. $6400 seems pretty optimistic to me. I'd bet it's a lot closer to $10K if/when they actually start selling them.

Looks like a Can Am Spyder with a cage. Considering the cheapest Spyder costs twice as much as a cheap small car over here I'd be suprised if he can reach that price point. Must be a fair few shortcuts in production to get the price that low.

It would work here, any thing with 3 or more wheels, you dont need a helmet, period.

I think it's pretty cool. Not sure how well it will do, or if it will make it to full production.

The article May 23rd on Popular Science had him saying "we are set to take ownership of the GM plant in Shreveport". Don't have a plant yet, and planning to deliver cars in about a year from now? Sounds optimistic.

Question Re: Elio Motors...for real or no $6.4K three wheeled "car"?

Strange that none of the links tell about the most important component . . . the ENGINE. All they say it's a 3 cyl 1 ltr overhead cam fuel-injected and produces 70 HP.

That's not too great on HP, but if it has good torque like old 3 cyl Yamaha motorcycles, then engine will be plenty powerful. Friend had Yammer 850 Special 3 cylinder motorcycle and it had real good torque.

Also think the "price" quote is more of teaser to gain interest as it's hard to find a 1 ltr motorcycle selling for that price.

Finally, his dream is to have 1500 employees whose payroll/benefits alone would require annual sales in 15,000 units or more, with zero profit.

All I can say is he needs deep pocket investor to pony up $$$Millions to fund start-up production.

Hope that Elio Motors gives it a go ; moderate climates could use a high-mpg commuter like that.

Curious if CARB emission rules would kill it for California? Is it 50 state legal?

Three wheelers are not new and have never really been successful. In this case it still seems more like a dream than a reality. The car pictured was not that attractive. Heck the Can Am motorcycle that this thing looks like it is made from is much much better looking. I doubt it will work and if they do make it, I doubt they hit their price point. As soon as I saw the advertised price (prior to manufacturing) I knew they are just trying to market it now hoping to get pre-orders to fund the car into production. I think it's ugly and bet a lot others will too.

I like the idea but my first thought was "Damn, that thing got beat with an ugly stick". Robin like styling. At least a morgan has a bit of style.

The ground clearance in the front seems quite low, but maybe that's just perspective of the pictures.

Five star safety rating? Compared to what....a motorcycle?

It does make me think of the smart car, where the body shell and frame are quite strong, but it doesn't much matter if there's very little energy dissipation (crumple zones) and the passengers are splattered all over the inside of that strong shell.

Good luck to them, but I won't be putting a deposit down on one.

Oh it's ugly, but a new car that gets incredible mileage and is less than 7k? Sign me up. After its established.
