I've been there, and got a tour...not from Jay though. No cameras allowed in the building. You could walk around all day long just looking at stuff.

It's amazing. His shop has more tools than I've ever seen. He has a heck of a mix of cars. Race cars to super low mileage run-of-the-mill sedans.

To be honest, the wall art and vintage photos, signs, and such are "almost" as awesome as the hundreds of vintage automobiles.

And then there's the Dusey wing..

Definitely not open to the public. Honestly a "friend of a friend" kinda thing. About 10 of us and the tour guide (Jay's Shop manager).

They allow car clubs etc to tour the place. You can request a tour on the NBC website someplace. I know the guys so just call the shop & ask directly, my parents visit every time they come to the US.
I think the limit is 15-20 people at a time.

The Shelby Owners Club was given a tour....and it is a Valhalla for car guys. I was most intrigued by Leno's large number of steam cars. He also has a complete crew of specialists to work on/restore and repair them. It must be great to have somebody like NBC drop $158 million in your pocket! What makes it especially cool is that they dropped it in Leno's pocket. A very down to earth, likable and pleasant guy. My hero.

Apparently he gets totally ADD when he's in the shop wanting to help and just starting un-bolting everything he can get his hands on!

I guess for being a gearhead, he's not much of a DIY guy. But hey, with $158 million contract, why gets your fingers dirty?

I think he would be if he had time and could get his hands dirty before going on TV. At least he's a car guy that actually knows something about the toys he has, rather than one that just buys something because they want to look good, and know NOTHING about what they actually have.

I spent some time at a car show this spring parked beside a kid and his dad with a Cobra replica that they stated they had "built". Throughout the day however the truth came out."So-n-so" did the motor, somebody else did the trans, someone else did the rear end, somebody else did the brakes, another did the piant etc.

By the end of the day, all I could be sure that they might have done was put the first tank of gas in it.

The one that topped it all was when he said, "I've gotta get somebody to turn up the idle, it's too slow at stoplights".
Good grief, the motor has a carb on it for christ sake, could you turn one screw??

Back when Jay was still "undiscovered" and bouncing around New England comedy clubs, his "day job" was working as a mechanic in a Boston Mercedes dealership.

I met him in the late 1960s when I was picking up some parts from the dealership, and had a question on setting up a Mercedes rear end. I also called him back later for a little further clarification on something.

I would always ask for him when I called looking for Mercedes info.

At the time, I thought he really knew his stuff.....

Shortly afterward, he made his first appearance on Johnny Carson's show, and the rest is history.

Leno performed for a charity event I attended (about 1000 attendees), and he did a great stand up routine. He is one of the hardest working guys in show biz... and he's very down to earth (from a blue collar background) and he's a likeable, honest guy. You've probably heard the expression "you can take all the sincerity in Show Businesses and put it into the belly button of a fly and have room to spare." That Jay is an unpretentious car guy in that environment says a lot about his character... even though he does make a ton of $. Better him than some of the other so-called entertainers who are at the opposite end of the spectrum.
