Default Pending snow storm=people go crazy

Unreal they have been hyping this storm for a week and predicting 6-12" for most of Mass and New England not a big storm for this area and nothing we havent had before. Maybe its because its the first storm of the season but people are going nuts. Ran to Autozone earlier and stopped at the gas station/corner store on the way back. There were 30 cars waiting in line for gas people were inside buying anything they could get their hands on the shelves were bare of bread chips milk was cleaned out no exaggeration. I dont get peoples thinking this is a mild storm we are not in the middle of nowhere the roads will be clear by mid day tomorrow. This isnt like the storm we got last year that dumped 4 feet on us in a 24 hour period.

It is annoying, people act like they are going to starve to death if we get 6 inches of snow. Never understood the run on milk and eggs.

Hell screw the run on food and gas it's when they are driving that they are most dangerous! Apparently the standard reaction to a dusting of snow in this state is to alternate slamming the accelerator and then the brakes. For some reason these idiots think that is how you drive in winter conditions. The concept of slow down and drive conservatively is apparently a foreign concept.

No way... if you're driving slow, stay home. You're ruining the fun for the rest of us.

But in states that get snow regularly, how does everyone forget how to drive in the stuff every year and, in some cases, between every snow? Blows my mind.

You would think we were having the storm of the century tonight. "Storm Alert" every ten minutes on the local networks.

We are slated to get 2-4" (assume closer to 2") and then change to rain overnight. It will freeze up Sunday overnight probably. So I guess I will have to deal with shoveling slush in the rain tomorrow. Hopefully we have enough milk and bread to get us through.

Hah!, glad to hear that goes on in the North East. I work with a number of guys from Syracuse and they are always going on about how Southerners raid the grocery stores at the slightest chance of snow. But I have to admit, it is kind of silly watching the panic set in.

We got about a foot here in the past 24 hours, most snow Ive seen living here three years. The locals werent all that bad but being Saturday most stayed home. We went to several stores this morning and again this evening, hardly anybody was there and I definitely enjoyed the lack of lines at the checkout. The neighbor was a bit upset tho, he had to shovel as the plow guy told him he was too busy freeing folks who were "snowed-in."

Has anyone else noticed we now name snow storms?? WTF is up with that, and since when is 2-4" an international incident??

I'm convinced the media hype is sponsored by the grocer's association.

I can usually find my snow shovels.

But darn it if my windshield scrapers don't leave me every summer.
First morning frost of the year and I'm rooting through the garage for one that I can't find.
Which ends with all the time spent looking for one has the truck warmed up enough by then to melt it.

Eventually I end up buying another that only ends up staying with me though the winter and runs away with the others over the summer.

My kids always say they are coming to our house for any disaster. We have enough dry goods and canned for the entire family for weeks. Lot's of frozen meat. Enough water and other liquids for 5 or more days. And that is with 6 adults and 5 children.

If I was really paranoid, I would have an extra 10 gallons of gas in the garage on top of the 5 I currently have.

Have to disagree, 12" of snow is a lot for us for a single storm, especially along the coast. Sure there have been bigger storms but that doesn't stop people from going nuts on perishables. Even when its just 3-4" people wipe the markets out of bread and milk. Doesn't help that the weather people ring the alarm bells any chance they get because it drives up ratings.

Boston area didn't get close to 4 feet out of that storm last winter, it was more like 2. The worst part about that storm was definitely the power outages rather than snow accumulation. Accumulation wise the string of 12" storms we had in February 4 or 5 years ago was much worse. I shoveled the roof during those and cut pathways with drifts as tall as me with the ol' snow blower all around the property by the time all of that was done with.

My Father-In-Law told me he's hearing it may turn icy later, which could result in the errant downed branches/trees and lost power.

I pulled out the generator and ran it. Also topped off the two 5-Gal gas cans just in case.

Other than that, we did make sure to have a gallon of milk for the baby, and bought a few regular items. Definitely no over-stocking or hoarding though, on our part.

I just hate how people drive like utter crap, especially for the first snow (which was a week ago).

Idk. My worst storm was when I lived in Michigan. Power and heat was out for about 4 days. Not a huge deal for a single guy back then. Now with a 1 year old at home. I'd be stocking up on supplies. Running out of milk or diapers would be worse than breaking a vise.

No.... Nope. I take that back. Breaking a vise would be worse....

Come down south. Any mention of the words 'dusting', "accumulation", 'snow', 'ice', or 'trace', instantly sends people into panic mode. Store shelves are wiped clean.

Hilarious!

1" of snow will close schools and businesses for a day, then be delayed the next...

This is a nothing storm, will relax today and work in the shop, take an hour and clear the driveway with the tractor tomorrow morning and fly out to Newfoundland Monday night for a few days of work and some George st. I love seeing the American media hype up every little accumulation of snow or rainstorm or wind to try and put the general population on high alert.

I got a few calls to plow snow last night. Told them I'd be over in the morning unless it was an absolute emergency. All said that was fine.

At least they didn't hit the panic button because they were affraid of running out of supplies.....LOL.

Don't see what the big deal is? Most all cars are front wheel drive, all wheel drive or 4x4. All handle one hell of a lot better in the snow than those old rear wheel cars most everyone drove back in the day! BTW 8" in Monroe MI.

It is funny how a area that every year gets snow can turn into a cluster as soon as a storm is predicted and how it is so hyped up for days coming to it and then we get a 2'' dusting.

Weathermen really like to hype-up storms now-a-days...
The worst part is the interruptions on TV (but they won't interrupt commercial breaks), usually during your favorite shows/movies.

Last year there was this great big snow storm and they were going nuts cutting into programs and staying on forever and everything was closing down, the best part was it hammered you guys and we got barely a light dusting.

Must not have been in SE MI ! My Dad used to live in the upper part of the lower peninsula. Longest he ever went with out power was maybe 36 hours. Biggest problem was hauling water from the artesian well in to the house, for drinking, cooking and toilet flushing ! He had a wood stove.

I'm not sure as to why they are naming the snow storms. My guess is since it's a storm to cover many states, it's just a way to track them. I guess a name is easier than saying that one storm we had last year.

As far as the bread and milk is concerned, I had to make that run, we were out.

Lol. Yeah, we are complete snow pussies. It's embarrassing. I've seen them call off school with NO snow on the ground.....just the threat of rain that MAY turn to snow.

But in our defense we have little or no plow trucks or salt trucks and our roads are on hilly or mountainous terrain barely wide enough for two cars to pass and have no shoulder. The few plow/salt trucks we have just plow/salt interstates and a few major roads. The rest stay untouched. It can get a little sporty.

Thats the problem around here, its not the snow and ice so much as the inability to deal with it because there is not road equipment for the infrequent snow storms. We have had several snow storms and ice storms already this year and the roads are terrible.

We got called out for a barn fire yesterday and you dont know what a thrill it was to drive a 5000 tanker on a narrow curvy and hilly road covered with ice!

At what point do they decide to just let it burn due to bad road conditions? Last year a neighboring county lost a Deputy when his patrol car slid off the road while responding to a call.

My ass would be puckered up tight as a new girlfriend driving that equipment up the road I live on in snow and ice.

We dont run code when the roads are like this and for medical calls we use our 4WD POVs because our rescue (which is an old ambulance) is a nightmare on these roads.

Luckily we dont have much in the way of traffic to contend with but our rigs are mostly all converted military or commercial cabs and chassis and they can be a real handful. You do learn some tricks though, our engine has an electronic transmission and I always hit neutral when slowing for a stop because it keeps you from going into a compression slide when the trans downshifts and on the tankers I keep the tag wheels down most of the time. Mostly though, just taking it easy and going slow is the way to go which isnt always easy when you know someone is in trouble.

This was from yesterday....the "Tidal Wave"!!

Here in the Greater Toronto Area they make a big deal when they get 4", probably because all the new immigrants have a hard time driving around when its a sunny day let alone snow on the ground. Whats really crazy all you have to is drive a hour North and west of Toronto and those areas can get a huge amount of snow when the winds are blowing off of lake Huron and Georgian bay. A couple years ago a small town a 1.5-2 hrs west of Toronto got 70" of snow in just a couple days.

I drove to work at 11:00 PM last night during the height of the "storm". Basically had the road to myself. 3" of packed powder limited me to about 60MPH in 4wd. Unbelievable how 6" of snow is now a national concern.

I blame the media for getting people all stressed up. Even if it's an inch or two, they dramatize it so much, people freak out. Then people go and buy all bread and milk, and leave the meat and other real food on the shelves, go figure.

60 mph is pretty damn fast for driving on packed snow, I would be doing around 40 mph my self.

Have you seen the shitty plastic ones they sell now? No wonder they only last a season.

Around here, if they is any chance of snow or ice, folks head to the store and buyout all the milk, bread, beer, and kotex....

Snowblowed the driveway at 8 PM last night. By 8 AM this morning, there was 12"+. That was last night alone here... No mad rush for anything that I noticed... Business as usual for Buffalo.

Looking out the window now, and its still lightly snowing, but the roads and driveways are down to pavement and cleared. Like it never even happened... Even if it was a weeknight, I highly doubt school would've been cancelled here.

Its amazing how an inch can shut down cities in some parts of the country, and a foot is just a light nuisance in others...
