Thinking about a general purpose set for metalwork... relatively infrequent use but I'd like something that lasts. I'm considering 68400 or 66480, any thoughts?

Unless you are drilling very hard steel, the cobalt set might be overkill. The other set is mechanics length and this is about 1" shorter for a 1/2" bit. If you have the ability to sharpen the bits then the non cobalt set you itemized would be great. You will likely get more holes out of the cobalt prior to needing to sharpen. The black gold bits are pretty darn good but so is cobalt. I believe these cobalt bits are m42 and this means they are 8% cobalt. Many other brands use m35 and this is 5% cobalt. Increased cobalt coincides with increased hardness but maybe also some increased brittleness. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply pt doc
fastenal is seriously starting to piss me off or as i say fastensome they never have what i need when i need it and they are extremely over priced. Even though they are right around the corner i'm not a cheapskate when it comes to tools but when i can save some money it helps.

Fastenal is not for your average DIY guy. Their pricing is nuts. But if you need a double cut cylindrical carbide burr, they will have at 3 times the cost of an online supplier. For me, they are just too expensive. When enco has 30% off and free shipping! that is the time to stock up.

For those looking at these bits, please click on the Fastenal links and you will see some nutty pricing from them.

I too wondered what hi molybdenum was before I bought these.

This is from norseman marketing info.

Magnum™ Drills & Super Premium Cutting Tools

Welcome to the world of Magnum Super Premium twist drills. This page will provide you with the opportunity to review the many features and benefits of Magnum drills and to learn why they are the finest tools available for most drilling applications. These heavy duty drills are recommended for use in tough metal drilling applications and work hardening grades of stainless steel.

Why Choose Magnum™?

Substantially longer cutting life - The nitro-carburized flute has an increased Rockwell hardness.

Cuts harder materials - The flatter point takes a smaller chip. More torque is directed to a smaller area. This allows drilling into materials with hardness of over 30 on the Rockwell "C" scale.

Stops drill walking - The split point design gives accurate starting without the use of a center punch.

Holds tighter hole size - The split point design is self centering. This limits the normal oversize drilling characteristics.

Outstanding quality appearance - The rich amber gold color sets it apart from commodity cutting tools.

Runs cooler, uses less torque - 135° point takes a smaller chip resulting in less heat. Friction is reduced by amber gold surface treatment.

Stops chuck slippage - Flats on drill shanks allow easy positive chuck grip.
(Flats are machined only on Mechanics Length drill bits & Silver & Deming drill bits, not on jobber length drill bits.)
Magnum™ Vs. Cobalt

The Magnum™ drills will substantially outperform cobalt drills in work hardening stainless steel applications. This performance advantage is the result of construction differences between the two types of drills. Cobalt drills, manufactured to Type J NAS 907 specs, have a very thick web. This web is necessary to limit breakage of the brittle cobalt steel. Magnum drills are made of special hi-moly tool steel, which is much tougher than cobalt steel. The web on a Magnum drill can be thinned considerably due to the toughness of the steel. (See Illustration A)

A Magnum drill with its thin web will penetrate the work hardening stainless fast enough to continually cut beneath the chip which is hardening from deformation. This means the drill is cutting softer steel.

The cobalt drill, with its thick web, cannot be fed at a fast enough rate to cut beneath the area which is hardening. As a result the cobalt drill is continually drilling into hardened steel.

Does anyone know if Norseman sells a selection of tap-sized drills only? I see plenty of drill/tap sets, but I'm well setup on taps. I'd like to be able to order a set of tap-sized drills (#36, 29, 25, 21, 7, F, 5/16, U & 27/64 for NC, and #33, 29, 25, 21, 3, 1, Q, 25/64 & 29/64 for NF, and maybe 2.05, 2.50, 2.90, 3.30, 4.20, 5.00, 6.70, 8.50 & 10.20 for metric)
Or should I just buy a 10-pack of each size, which seems like more than I'd need?

27 bits for a full set. I would guess that if huot does not make an index, then a pre made kit would not be available. try calling Norseman and asking. they are super great to deal with.

Keep in mind, many of the sets are available in screw machine, mechanics and jobber length. Using a 1/2" but as an example:

screw machine: 4" length
mechanics: 5"
jobber: 6"

Please keep in mind that the difference in lengths will be smaller for smaller diameter bits since they are already shorter. I would guess that it is proportional to the standard jobber length. Clear as mud?

I've got a somewhat cheap MAC labeled HSS bits. They are okay at best, but dull quickly.
As an auto tech, what set do you recommend?

66820 would be great. Comes in solid plastic case and should be plenty if you want a 29 piece fractional set.

Anyone know if they have a left hand set somewhere between the 13 piece and full set? I want bigger than 1/4 but don't want to pay 200+ for the big set.

This deal begins today. The Norseman PDF catatalog that I linked to is quite so give it maybe 30 seconds.

Patrick is super nice and will try to answer your questions about sets but realize that he does not know everything. Calling nOrseman could be a good idea since they know their product well. And they are very nice as well.

Stock up for the first time or buy what you didn't last time. These bits are damn nice.

I would look at the pdf to see exactly what is in each set. the burrs have interesting part numbers with different shank diameters, tool diameters and end cutting or not.

While I appreciate you running this again, I'm still lost on which ones to get. :willy_nil

If you need precise drilling in your drill press get the screw machine length. I got the first 3 sets in the original post. They are short but that makes them more rigid. If that's not important then get jobber length drills. Get the black gold bits. At these prices it's a no brainier. They are incredible cutters.

Fractional is super handy to have. If you are drilling and tapping them the A to Z and 1-60 sets are handy to have. If you want all three, you can get them in a big 115 piece set or in 3separate sets to make it a bit more convenient.

Hope this helps.

To clarify on the various lengths offered in the drill bits:

when I was looking into what length to get, I used the 1/2" as the point of comparison. I think the results were as follows:

jobber length 6" long
mechanics length 5"
screw machine 4"

For increased rigidity and likely a hole that ends up where you want it, the screw machine length are recommended. Reading up on various machining forums helped me decide this. Having some jobber length drills are needed if you need deeper hole drilling capabilities. But having started with the screw machine and following with the jobber allows me to get better hole placement.

These options along with different drill materials, point angles, shank diameters and storage case types makes the combinations quite high. But its nice to have options. :)
