Default Kennedy tool box value

I'm hoping to look at a toolbox I saw posted today. I still don't have a good source for pricing used boxes, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. It is a Kennedy and here is what the ad said:
"Kennedy brand tool boxes.set of three. Top and middle matched set 9"deep and 27" wide.Bottom box 29" wide and 20" deep. will sell as set or indvidualy.Boxes are clean and don't come with tools. 17 drawers brown wrinkle finish."

Attached is the picture. Can you guys give me an idea of what would be a "good deal" on these?

Thanks!

First off, that bottom box is likely 27" wide and 18" deep. I think his measurements are off, but take your tape measure and check the measurements if you go look at it.

I don't know how much use those top two boxes will be b/c they look like machinest boxes, not automotive. I wouldn't pay more than $150 tops for that setup.

I agree that the tops will probably be tough to use, that is my biggest concern. I definitely won't have them sitting on this lower (if I get it), but would possibly use them on my bench for all the little parts, pieces, pencils, etc. that I will keep there.

Thanks for the number, hopefully others will have input as well. I'll keep this updated on what happens.

FWIW, I'm a fan of the Kennedy machinst's chests. I have several and use them for chisels, punches, taps, dies, reamers, drills, files, anything small, round or flat. I'd agree it's a $150-250 set. The local tool pawn is asking $600.

thnx, jack vines

All the real value is in the roller cabinet that can be 150 itself if in great condition the top box 50-75 and the 2 drawer unit is 20-50. They are good boxes not intended for serious heavy weights in the drawers. Values on older stuff is low for some reason could be the issue that most time is not the felt is in need of replacement. That set up new is about 1k

Yep, most of the value is in the rollaway. I have a similar rollaway to that Kennedy. It's an old Waterloo Industrial, 5 drawers and compartment in the bottom. Good quality box.

I think $150 would be a good deal.

I just bought the same boxes about 3 weeks ago. They were at an estate sale in phx. They wanted $160 for them. I really wasn't looking for a Kennedy but they were so nice I got to thinking about them and went back the next morning early and got them for $120. They are really nice inside with perfect felt. The outsides cleaned up great with armorall. I have never had a machinists cabinet but I really like it. No problem finding things to fill the smaller drawers. Didn't really know what value to put on them but figured I got a good enough deal to sell them if I wanted. Now, I am gonna keep em. The small box is a Kennedy also.

I haven't heard back, but this poster is asking $125 for the (3) boxes so hopefully they are nice and we can work out a deal.

I will be the dissenting voice here. I think $75-100 for the top, a minimum of $50-70 for the middle box, and $125-150 for the base. So say $250-300 for the whole rig as it sets. Perhaps not worth that to a mechanic, but I think it would be to most machinists. But hey, thoughts on worth are subjective aren't they.

For that price I would give the man the money and haul those home with me.

Yeah, as long as they work okay, that sounds good. Rustoleum makes almost a spot on brown color if you want to do a repaint on the outside of the boxes.

I missed this statement, ^^^^^^^^I quoted what I think the actual value is. A good deal to me would be anything short of $200, a screaming deal is $125 or so.

Dang the luck... someone scooped it up before I did. I never heard back from the guy, and the ad is no longer on Craigslist.

Thanks for the input guys.

As posted in my latest find thread - have cash and move FAST. The only things that sit out for sale for a long time are too much money.. gotta know the deal.

Lotta truth there, if you cannot do a rapid value assessment on things like this, you will lose out a lot.

Yep, know what you're looking for so when you see it you can jump on it. A lot of times it's seeing the deal at the right time and then you gotta move on it quick!

That's definitely the truth! Before knowing what I was willing to offer on these, I went ahead and emailed the guy telling him I was interested and wanted to look at them as soon as possible. Someone else must have seen the ad before me though.

You may have emailed him first but he could've felt you were a little wishy washy whether or not you wanted them, and someone else could've emailed after you and said they'd be by with cash in hand to get them.

That's how it goes sometimes.
