Default Snap-on KR Questions

I'm going to look at a Snap-on KR-537 top box, probably from the late 70's or early 80's. It also has a bottom chest, although not sure of the model, but I'm told it has the same "footprint" as the KR-537, and has 7 drawers.
Any comments on the quality of these boxes? Anything to look for in particular? I'm told it's in decent shape considering itís age. Any idea of the price range for these boxes if in decent condition?

Thanks,
RM209

I have a KR537 (I think -- my dealer listed it as a KRA537 -- I bought it from him used, basically at the price he gave to someone else who traded it in for a new box. But the '82 catalog lists the KR537C. We didn't know what letter it was, though. If you have a pic., perhaps I can help ID it. Unless it has the ID on it, and if it does, I'd appreciate you telling me the exact locatioin, because I've taken mine apart and still can't find any ID imprint. THe box was repainted by an auto body shop guy and his paint was really half-assed.

My initial impressions are that the box is solid, I like the drawer layout. I also like the friction slides or "runners," but I'm not sure that all the runners are available at anymore. I got a few lengths new from SO (via warranty).

There are a few threads on this model that can be found in the archive.

Vinko: Thanks for your comments; I searched a few threads, but wanted some basic thoughts from an owner.
I'll pass on the location of the ID after I look at the box.

I have a KR 555, I like it . The bottom drawer is ball bearing, the rest friction. Bought it in early 90s, still in good shape

Walrus, Torqueman: Thanks for the input; I think I'll take a serious look at the Snap-on box.

Torqueman: That sounds like a smokin' deal you got!

@torqueman: nice set up. I've got the 557 and would love to find a 547. I think my side box is older, perhaps a 278. My 537 is missing the stainless (or aluminum) plate, though I'd like to get one made as soon as I can find someone who'll measure the specs for me

RM209 & Vinko

I almost bought a set with the same model #'s from a trans tech, Mike #1, for $250 less; even had $25.00 down to hold it.

Then this set came up, the guy (a retired Honda cycle mechanic, Mike #2) had the side box listed and when I was eMailing him about it, I ask if he had any other pieces. Did he!

The set was so nice that I called Mike #1, explained and we agreed he'd keep the deposit.

Mike #2 kept the set spotless since new in 1985. He kept apologizing for a small dent and a paint sag, both on the back side of the boxes.

I really like these boxes. I also like my hammered gray with red drawers CM from the 70's. They are repainted and in the basement - just don't have the heart to part with them.

i recently bought a kra558a and kra377a for $300 total. They were in pretty decent shape, but both were missing casters...

i love those old 3 drawer side boxes, ive picked up 3 of them over the years as used trade ins for $100-$150 each. i use the small drawers for welding lenses and supplies, and the open areas for drills, timing lights, ect in their boxes

Torque: congrats on the SO score. I've been using also two of my dad's old Crafty grey/red small roller boxes from the 60's or 70's. Good stuff. I'm going to take them apart to relube slides when I can.

I forgot that you had the middle box too. I need that and I need all those damn drawer pulls SnapOn has forsaken me -- there are few replacement parts available.
