Ill ask a few more questions.... in hopes it is not a torque converter failure.

Does the truck feel like it is fighting your brakes when you put it in reverse? As in, does the truck WANT to back up when you put it in reverse, but you holding the brakes stalls out the motor?

Or does the engine simply want to stall?

The torque converter should NEVER lock in reverse. If you are actually fighting to hold the truck from backing up using the brake pedal, and that is stalling out the motor, then a torque converter problem is more than likely the cause. A good trans service may clear it up though. Full flush with filter.

If the engine is simply stalling, then it might not be getting the commanded high idle that the EEC sends. That means you probably have an engine problem, and not a trans problem.

Continuing on...

I had similar symptoms to yours when a specific engine sensor died, and cooked the associated harness.

Torque converter lockup in reverse, causing a stall if I was on the brakes and didnt feel like backing up at 10 mph

The sensor was the ICP sensor, and harness.

These motors use HEUI Injectors, which require a specific high oil pressure to fire. The IC monitors this pressure, to raise and lower the pressure supplied by the high pressure oil pump.

If the ICP fails, the engine goes into a "limp" mode, supplying a predetermined amount of oil pressure to the injectors, which translates into a predetermined amount of fuel, which controls idle and revs.

This entire thing with a failing ICP normally translates into a lowered idle, slow throttle response, and occasional stalling (in part due to the lower idle)

I could go on.... but do you see where I am going?

If you start the truck in neutral and then put it in Drive does it die? Trans filter laying in pan will not cause this. I will cause the trans to not engauge but not die. You could have bad gasket in valve body also. You really need a Real transmission guy to look at it. Problem is if it has lots of miles no one will want to "fix" it because they will be blamed for any thing else that goes wrong with it. WE just put customers used engine in there car and now transmission delays cold and now its my fault. It is you touched it last syndrome.

Idasho I see where your going with the ICP sensor but I've rarely seen an ICP sensor go bad without tripping the check engine light. If it's in limp mode the light is on.The OP says no check engine light on.

Ive also torn down, condemned trannies that still had the OE print on the face of the clutch packs, because someone convinced the owner that it needed to be rebuilt, when all it had was a circuit problem, and would have been easily fixed in the truck. I bench build, so they are brought to me after someone "diagnosis-ed" it!

I will declare that am not a transmission specialist, Ive only been playing with trannies for about 20 years, with very good luck! I am a mean diagnostic techncian, and driveability is my specailty, I just like working on automatics, and Im tooled up to the eyeballs for doing it, so forward we go.

Does it only stall in Drive and when locked in "2nd" Yes or no? (manual 1 and reverse it does not stall?)

You must be at operating temperature before answering that question.

Answer that I will have more for you, and will walk you to your problem, you will then know if you need parts or a tear down.

Thanks, Bill
