Default This is why a land line is a must!

If man can create it, think it, build it, it too can be broken and cracked. So much for those hi-end DECT-6 phone's I bought last year . . . Rolling code blah, blah, blah . . .

I'll stick with my land line phone with a external encrypter thank you!

Speaking of which . . . Since *skimming* is so prevalent in North America, never ever let the girls use those portable units. Or walk away with your CC!

I am always present when they swipe the CC, and watching that the terminal is not attached to anything else . . .

Was this only applying to cordless phones or to most wireless phones including cell phones?

Either way it seems like a lot of work to try figure out who I've been cheating on my GF with lol.... Not a real big deal to me unless you are a high security government or military official. In the end it doens't matter because anyone in the government can just turn on your phone and listen to you whether you're on a call or not. Now that's what really scares me.

I have a landline but it's connected to a Panasonic 5GHz cordless phone. I plug a headset into that and walk around the house/yard/shop yakking as I do what I need to do. Range isn't that great compared to a 2.4GHz phone (only about 100 yards or so), but no interference problems like the older units. The voice quality is superb.

If some dumb schmuck feels the overwhelming need to declare his masculinity by claiming that he listened to me and my buddy planning our next turkey hunt or my wife yakking to her girlfriends, I could care less. Have at it... some real National Security stuff going on here. He could do so with much less effort just by plugging into the demarcation point, though.

Every now and then, when we hear all those clicks and clacks on the line, we like to say Hi! to CFB Leitrim (the Canadian Forces communications base just south of Ottawa).

What makes you think you have something they want?

If they want your info, there is a lot easier way to get it....for example, point a laser at your window....the glass will vibrate with the sound in your house....translation...they can hear everything you say.

Land lines are easier to tap...climb up on a pole and use a cheap linemans handset....a lot cheaper than the hardware to crack the DECT phones....

To monitor a cordless phone, you need to typically be within 300-500'. Tap a phone line? A few miles away...

Or they can just sift through your trash....

Raid your mail box.....

Bug your computer.....

Lets not forget all those satelites that travel over your house every day....

I cant recall talking about anything sensitive enough over a phone that I would be paranoid or terribly concerned if someone were listening, but I'm not a spy or anything cool like that.

The only reason I can see to still have a land line is for emergencies. If there were ever a catastrophic event, or long term power outage, an old fashioned landline telephone (not cordless) would be the only phone service available.

Your bank, for example, is prepared to use voice encryption in its telephone conversations with you?

I came back to work after being gone for a year playing soldier to find that we are using what looks suspiciously like a CIK for a STU III to authorize us at the fuel farm... It just rattles around in the sunglasses holder in the car until its time to fill up. That takes a mental adjustment, let me tell you.

I usually don't have anything of any value for an eavesdropper to hear anyways. Unless he wants to meet me for dinner, or come in early for work at 5AM with me.

I'm not so sure that all the phones out there are even all that secure. I remember being at my Aunt's house with by newborn son. We had a baby moniter with us, and the baby monitor started picking up someone's phone conversation. It was a pretty wild conversation too...one teen girl describing to another how she was being sexually abused by a stepfather.
