Due to not owning a TV for 14months,What happened at Boyds? Is it still going,I got to where Mickey? and Charlie left to work for Foose etc, what happened to that Dwayne? bloke,
Does the place still make Rods etc, is it still on TV, I suppose most of the infrastructure dissapeared after the 'old man' passed.

Wow! Thats seems like a bad ending to a long Est buisness then? So pretty much everyone faded away? I thought Id not read anything in Hot Rod etc for a long time,Id would have thought someone would have 'bought up' the name etc,you know-like the Japs? owning Moon eyes. You (most) guys arn't losing much sleep over it I see!!! (I was never a lover of how they all went about their work) Did they-whoever-sell all his cars off at auction? Did his missus dissappear with trash bags full o cash then?
Sorry for all the questions, I somehow feel a 'bit sad' that it all died off-not the products-mainly the scenario. Thanks for answering.

Boyd wasn't the most honest businessman going. The story I heard was when he knew his creditors were coming to lock his doors, he got his stuff the hell outta there, but left the customer's stuff to be grabbed. His chief designer caught wind of it and got the customer's stuff hidden elsewhere too, leaving nothing for the creditors to grab... so they went after the stuff they knew Boyd had hidden. He never did forgive Foose for interfering with him.

Wow I totally missed hearing he passed away. I just googled his name and learned all sorts of stuff I guess I missed. I used to watch his show once in a while. He went threw a lot of employees. I liked the old guy that did the old school metal work that passed away when the show was on. Think his name was Roy. Boyd seemed like a decent guy to work for. Seemed like if you gave a good days work he treated you well. Took his employees all over and did lots of stuff for them but also expected them to work many hours every week.

Just read that one of his customers filed bankruptcy and boyd lost almost 500,000 from that. Then the emission issue, guess he was registering cars he built as antiques to get around the emission but the government said he changed to many things on the cars to make them antiques.

Default Re: Whats happening at Boyds these days?

from the net, but probably needs some updating

Crew membersBoyd Coddington: owner, died on February 27, 2008 from complications from recent surgery.
Duane Mayer: Projects Supervisor: now runs his own shop, American Hot Rods Inc.
Lee Hayes: Metal worker
Dan Sobieski: Fabricator/assembler
Bernt Karlsson: Body Shop Supervisor, now runs his own shop with Duane Mayer
Justin Bergsto: Body Shop worker
Rafael Garcia: Body Shop worker, now works at American Hot Rods Inc
Departures (in order of exit) Chad "Bluebear" Geary, fired for insubordination during the rat rod build-off. Against Boyd's implicit orders, Bluebear insisted on building the car like an old-school hot rod without boxed frame rails.
Al Simon: Chassis builder, left after the rat rod build-off though subsequently returned to the shop.
Charley Hutton: Bodyshop supervisor, leaves Boyd's company after deciding to go work for competitor Chip Foose during the 42 Woodie build. Despite offering to return after the work was completed, Boyd said it was a gross breach of trust and told him never to come back. Hutton later appeared on the show Rides, it said he worked for Chip Foose and won a Ridler Award. Later Hutton appeared on Overhaulin'. He subsequently opened his own custom paint shop in Idaho.
Andrew "Beetle Bailey" Petterson: Bodyshop worker, left at the same as Hutton and went to work for Chip Foose.
Mike Curtis: Machine Shop Supervisor, fired for designing motor cycle wheels for competitor Chip Foose in his free time. Curtis later appeared on Overhaulin'.
Roy Schmidt: Metal worker, died, aged 64, after a long battle with lung cancer.
Thomas Loddby: Fabricator/Assembler, left to start a shipping business but later returned to work part-time.
Brad Johnston: Fabricator/assembler, left after failing to turn up for work on a Saturday during the 61 Impala Bubbletop build. Accused Duane of bullying and Boyd for never being around the shop.
Scott Parker: Fabricator/Assembler, left to work for himself but ended up working for Chip Foose.
Willie Johnstone: Bodyshop painter, returned to New Zealand and opened his own custom paint shop in Tauranga.
Liz Miles left the company, as claimed by the company's statement, after the show's producer set Liz up to work on Jos Hot Rod. But according to Miles's biography, she was asked to leave the company because of issues with Boyd's wife, Jo Coddington.[2] She subsequently joined Popular Hot Rodding magazine as its Tech Editor.[3]

One omission on that. Mike Curtis may or may not have been on his own time, but he was using the computer at Boyd's. That firing was one of the precious few decisions he made that I agreed with.

Just thow did Foose "interfere" with him? All I knew was that Foose previously worked for him and left. I think I could see why.

I also thought Charley and Jo were doing the hibbity jibbity.

Reading Duanes bio on the American Hotrod site, it said that he had Boyd build him a truck before he was working there. If he had enough money to do that, why did he have to end up working for Boyd?

Charley set up on his own, after leaving Foose. He still paints for Foose and numerous others, seems like things are going well The comparison between his miserable shack at Boyd's, the shop at Foose and his current place is pretty dramatic!

The sons aren't doing a great job of keeping his name alive (although they inherited at the worst possible moment, in terms of the economy), but Boyd Coddington Wheels and Sons of Boyd are both still trading.

Let's not forget how Boyd screwed investors in "Boyds" wheels and steering wheels. The company went public, Boyd ran it into the ground, declared bankruptcy, then immediately opened the private company "Boyd Coddington" wheels. Using all the old equipment that the investors had bought, no doubt.
