So I did a job for a guy that is looking to sell two of these 5 HP upright oil type compressors. They are about a year old but have never been used. It says black max on the tank is about 5' tall 30" in diameter a pretty big unit. Any idea on what they sell for new and are they any good. Any drawbacks to it sitting unused for a year? Thanks,
Jimmy |

I did a search also and came up with the same stuff. It says 12.7 scfm @40 psi, does that sound good/ bad? He wants 200 bucks for it so I'm going to get it. Thanks,

Fairly low pressure for air tools - a lot of which want to see 90 psi. For $200 it might be worth it depending on your plans for it. Sitting shouldn't be a problem unless there is any internal rust on the compressor - factory oil should have prevented that.

Does that mean fairly low and it will run all the time? And is that for any air tools or just say tools that run alot like cut off wheels, sanders, etc.? I really know nada when it comes to compressors, right now I have an old noisy Sears roll around that rattles the nails out of the walls. It has done what I need to do pretty well. Only reason I want a new one is it should be a little less noisy and the Sears is starting to drag and sound sluggish at times. Thanks again,

Most air tools run @ 90. It's going to put out less CFM @ 90 than at 40. How much, I'm not sure. If you're using air hungry tools (grinders, sanders, etc) it's going to run a lot. It'll be fine for impacts. Your sears is probably what, 3-5 CFM? If I had to guess, and this is merely a guess, I'd say it puts out 8-10 CFM @ 90.
Still an upgrade and less noise... both of which I wish I could have for $200. Sounds like a deal.

If they are in out of the weather sitting shouldn't hurt them at all.
That seems like a VERY good price. Black Max, was sold by Sam's Club around here. My father-in-law has an 80 gallon one that he has had for about 9 years. He doesn't use it a lot but it still looks and runs like new. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Coleman manf. the Black Max Units. They are not on par with Quincy, Champion, etc. But they are good for the money and at the price you quoted they are excellent! EDIT: Does the Black Max say Sanborn on it somewhere? Sanborn is a higher end air compressor....however, justa bout all the companys are making their typical high end industrial compressor AND entry level compressors.....Ingersoll Rand, etc....just about all of them offer two different qualities... It does say Sanborne on it and I told the guy I want to buy it. I will be picking it up in a week or so I'll post some pics of it when I do. Thanks for all the help.

I have an OLD (1976) Sanborn Mfg. Compressor right now, 3HP, about 6-7 cfm at 90psi. It works ok considering it's all I can fit right now. Must say though, as old as it is it still works pretty well!

I've got an old Sanborn compressor. It's a sturdy old machine. The company was bought out by Coleman as I understand it.

I had a sanborn black max, 5 hp, on I believe a 35 gallon tank, 220v, worked great for many years,i got it new in oh I guess it was 95, it did have a ahrd time keeping up wiht air sanders and my blast cabonet, and in the last few years it started getting louder and having a harder time keeping up, I gave it to a bud who is still using it, and I was bad about never draining the tank or checking the oil, now that I think about it i don't think I even had to add any oil to it, I hope my IR serves me as well

Sanborn was sold by Menards here in the midwest as their high end compressors. I think it might have been an exclusive thing, which could explain why they got bought out, Menards is more known for cheap, fall apart tool brands. If its black, I believe its a pre colman Sanborn. I've looked 'em over a few times, they look like quality, heavy duty machines.

Mine is dark red. I bought it used from an estate about 9 years ago. I knew it hadn't been used much because the only air "tools" the guy had was an inflator and air gun. Still had the owner's manual with it. I don't know where it came from, but I've never seen a Menards.
