Default Pros/Cons living in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin residence, what would you say the best and worst things are about living in Wisconsin?

I dont live there, but I am usualy there one or two weeks a year.

They have good beer, supper clubs, taverns, and more than their share of good looking blond hair blue eyed woman.

I'm interested in hearing some opinions as well. I might be moving to the Oshkosh area upon graduation.

I know their football team has trouble with little private schools from Texas.

I live on the border of IL/WI and here is my opinion:

Pros
good beer
friendly people
decent roads/drives
nice beaches (alot better than what was there 15+ years ago)
great fishing
cheap golf

Cons
winter (as much as I would miss the snow it is a pain in the arse)
hot/humid summers

I have lived in Wisconsin my whole life.

Pros. Great fishing and hunting. We have fresh water and lakes every where.

Great roads, I have travelled the Country and our roads are some of the best.

Plenty of taverns and cheap prices on beer and drinks.

Depending on where you live,it is relatively inexpensive to live, housing etc.

Again depending where you live, low crime rate. The cold has a tendency to keep the riff raff out.

Excellent snowmobile and ATV trail systems.

NO Ethanol laws, we have gas with NO ethanol.

Great public schooling, some of the best in the Nation.

Cons. HIGH property taxes. I pay $3000 a year on a 150k house.

Winter lasts from Nov to April. Dec ,Jan and Feb will have below 0 f temps for weeks on end.

Job oppurtunities are somewhat limited IMO

The beer thing sounds great but the weather is a deal breaker for me. Born and raised in southern California, my blood is too thin for a wisconsin winter.

Pros: Some of the best (albeit little know) motorcycle riding roads in the Country. I really love a fifty mile radius surrounding Madison. Grab a Gazzetter and you'll see what I am talking about. World Class Fishing in the Northwoods (and really the whole state) see www.fishinghotspots.com . The Best Music Fest in the World www.Summerfest.com . Historic Milwaukee. The Brewers. (Ball team and actual producers of beer) Friendly people. One of the highest rated Hospitals in the Country (St Lukes Milwaukee).
Cons: Long Cold Winters. But hey you may like that. Not my cup of tea but I've not left the area (yet)!

Thats not too bad. My dad pays 3500 in taxes for a 100k house. Good ol' Mass.

I've spent a lot of time in Madison and Milwaukee and towns in between on 94. I've also been out to Fox Lake and Beaver Dam quite a bit. I hear its a way better state than Illinois. I HATE Chicago and greater chicago, illinois.

Pro - If you are into aviation or flying, the Oshkosh airport becomes the busiest airport in the world for 1 week every year. There is a huge airshow the last week of July each year (www.airventure.org).

Con - If you aren't into aviation then the town becomes a madhouse with crazy pilots running around all week. Of course if you own a house you can always do what alot of other locals do and rent it out for the week. Depending on the location some houses go for as high as $2500 to $3000 for the week.

I live about 10 miles north of Oshkosh. It's a great little city, with some old historic places there. Good schools, good shopping and in the middle of the state so Milwaukee is an easy drive, and going up north is also easy. Lot's of good hospitals in the area as well. Oshkosh is the home of Oshkosh Truck, which makes defense trucks for the gov, as well as fire and cement trucks. Although I do not work there, my friends do, and they hire gobs of people at a time, and also lay them off alot at a time.

Winters are not that bad. In fact, most of us that have lived here all out lives, or are from Minnesota, like I am can remember snowbanks at the ends of the driveways that were huge. Not so much any more, although Minnesota has gotten hammered this winter.

Good luck with your choice and if you need any more information, just shout. I would be glad to help!!!

Taxes are very high!!!
If you are lucky you will feel only one of your testicles, the other one has turned to ice.
Snow at the the end of April.
lack of jobs.

If you are lost in the woods you will find a bar.
Good hunting and fishing.
Lots of sun.
Very clean state.
Housing is ok.
roads are ok.

By the way Oshkosh is a nice place, but avoid all the crazy pilots...

I lived in Wisconsin for two years; I have a sister still there, but I never understood her love for that place up North.

Going over to Wisconsin to ride the alphabet roads is a popular pastime for Minnesota motorcyclists, too.

Having lived in Winnestoa (neither claimed by Minnesota or Wisconsin) for 11 years, the several things I liked in my little town of River Falls WI were:
  • Chicken dinners at the American Legion Hall
  • Roen Ford, they were honest!
  • The Brat wagon
  • Dick's IGA, a better business/owner you'll never find.
  • The School Teachers and staff were excellent
  • A great place to raise a gaggle of kids
  • They knew how to remove snow from the roads
  • The Falls Theater. Micky and her Dad were the best!
  • Cheese Curds
Things I didn't like:
  • Taxes, too danged high!
  • Snowplow berms turning to ice and blocking your driveway
  • Winters, I had warmer ones living in Alaska
  • All my kids got mid-western accents
  • When the Packers came to town
  • When the KC Chiefs came to town. (I lived next to their summer camp)
  • When I left

River Falls is a nice little town. As you mentioned, the west edge of WI is almost like an extension of Minnesota - lots of people who work in the Twin Cities live there.
