Default My girlfriend helped me out with a job.

So, I have to replace a water pump on an 03 Kia Sedonda "timing belt driven;" and the balancer needs to come off. Anyway, the bolt will not come off with my impact guns.

I ask my GF to try and break the balancer bolt loose with my breaker bar... I pull off the bell housing inspection plate, and try a pry bar to hold the flywheel; can't get a solid bite on it. So next I try a holding a TC bolt to prevent the flywheel from moving; I was afraid the bolt would snap, so that didn't work either.

Needless to say, the bolt is still on there which sucks... But, when I get up from under the van, I see this...

IMAG0213.jpg

IMAG0212.jpg

She asked if she could let go, I said "No, not yet..." And, snapped a few pics. LOL

She may not of broke the bolt loose, but damn she looked good tryin'!!!

Oh, yeah... Anyone have any ideas how do get this damn bolt off?

Try an air hammer with the pointed bit. Place the bit on the flat spot of the bolt so it spins it counter-clockwise to loosen. Hold tight so you don't slip and bust your hand. A few short bursts should break it free enough so you can finish it with a socket. You might have to clean up the hex a little on the grinder afterward but this method works when there's good way to hold the other side.

As soon as I saw your name, the word "girlfriend" in the title, and the little paperclip icon to show images were attached, I knew this was going to be a good thread.

These newest pics only cause me to repeat what I said in that toolbox thread. Your GF is easily my favorite GJ-related lady.

Rock on, John!

I started reading this and said to myself "sicko" then remembered there was a legitimate question in the original post.

As long as the pulley could take it, I'd say chain wrench to hold it.

OK Hate to rune the thread butt
Had the same problem on a couple of engines and my brother who own a machine shop told me to heat the bolt with a torch and it'll brake lose. all I got
is a propane torch and it works. the bolts have lock-tite on them and the heat
soften it up. On the Kia Sportage there are 5 small bolts that holds the pulley
in place the crank bolt doesn't need to be removed. The same on Geo 3 and 4
cyl. engine and on Suzuki 1.6 engines.
Hope this help.

Maybe his impact isn't up to the job. You might need a big breaker bar.

Here is a pic of the balancer.

IMAG0215.jpg

It is a 3.5L; the head of the bolt is 22mm with a 1/2 square in the middle. It is the only bolt holding it on; it does not appear to be a 2 piece balancer.

An air chisel would be rather difficult to get to the bolt; it's recessed.

Don't suggest using 2 punches/bolts/etc and a pry bar to hold the balancer. The 2 holes, are in a solid rubber ring "there are no threaded holes on the balancer." Which also omits the torch idea. That was the first thing I tried; flames where catching the rubber almost instantly.

I have a 3/4 impact, but my air supply will not support it. I am using 1/4 hose; the gun requires 3/8 hose. I am going to get 3/8 hose in the morning, in hopes that it will power my impact. I doubt it work, but I will try.

I was also contemplating drilling and threading holes into the balancer, so I could thread 2 bolts in, use a pry bar to hold the crank still, and bust the bolt loose with a breaker bar. I should be able to figure something out before I would ever need to resort to this. I hope??? LOL

Any suggestions are still greatly appreciated...

Thanks guys.

Use a deep socket on a breaker bar and wedge the bar against something hard like the rad. support and crank the engine over with the starter it will come right off.

Heat the bolt with a propane or mapp gas torch and remove the bolt. The crankshaft bolt is torqued to 130-138 lbs. only so it should not be too difficult. There is also a crankshaft wrench - No. 09231-33100. Hope that helps.

I will probably get flamed for suggesting this, but it worked for me. I used a short piece of 1/8" flat stock with 2 holes drilled in it. I bolted one end to the fly wheel and the other to the block. It held the fly wheel rock solid and I was able to get the balancer bolt out with my breaker bar. My situation was easier because the trans was out of the way. Good luck.

Maybe try a portable air tank at the end of the hose with a 1/2" whip hose, oiling the gun will give it a little boost, but 1/4" air line is too small for impact tools.

I know you said no air chisel, but have you considered this doohickey?

Looks like it might fit that recess...and aren't O2 sensors coincidentally 22mm?

I don't know why you'd get flamed. Sounds like a good idea to me.

John, you just feel free to keep posting as many pics of your helper as you'd like, O.K.?

Yes yes, like maybe washing the car? Lots of possibilities there.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all. That first pic that you posted awhile back showed a very attractive young woman with a captivating smile and beautiful eyes. Now we know that the other end is very attractive as well.

How much time does she put in at the gym every week? Those proportions rarely just happen by chance.

I have to give you credit....the ability to keep your composure and snap a pic vs 'something' else.....well....that is just down right control....

My wife wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds in that position......

R Kelly "Feeling on your Booty" was playing when I opened this thread. LOL. As for the bolt I also recommend placing your breaker bar against the suspension and cranking the motor over. Disconnect the ignition so it doesn't start up. I used this method mulitple times when working on my wifes old Ford ZX2 and it worked everytime.

Is it rubber all the way? I did a Scooby recently and it was a 2-piece balancer with the rubber like that and 4 holes. The bottom of the holes were in the metal centre part. May be worth a close look as it may well be the case here.
