Default Anyone built or bought the 2 story shed/barn from Home Depot?

Anyone ever built or bought the 2 story shed/barn from Home Depot?

Its a 16x16 with 2 story, and double barn style door.

They are running a special this month, for $6100.00 (taxes included, labor, final price). on this building.. it was around $8000 last year.

They claim they can built in one day.

Or i could buy the plans on ebay ($10 @ http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=140533861399 ) and build it myself for around $3000 or $3500 in materials ..

What would you do?

I dont really like just giving $3000 away (in labor). choices.. choices..

yeah. i know im cheap..

I built the 8x10 version from Home Depot last year. Pretty much the same idea, just a smaller scale.
I put it up in two days by myself (with help from my 5 year old). It was honestly pretty easy and mine could easily have gone up in a few hours with a couple guys to help out.

The biggest time waster is nailing everything together. I highly recommend buying/renting a framing nailer and a roof nailer!

Well, I would get a materials list together and if infact it could be built for under 3500.00, I would build it myself. I am cheap also and cant see paying to have doen what I can do myself.

Build it yourself, spend some of the money saved on a great meal at home.

I just find it amazing that a department store sells shed kits. We only have specialist manufacturers for things like that lol.
If it's anything like Ikea furniture - let them build it. hahaha

The one model they had at one of my Home Depot's was pretty roomy inside.I liked it,but couldn't get away with one that tall in my area.

I'd do it myself. In fact, I'll be building one here in a few weeks as soon as the wet weather ends. It won't be this big and it will only be one story, but I'd still do it myself. Especially, if you can get another guy to help you. Good luck.......

No way I would let anyone else have the fun of building it. I would put it on a slab though. And the doors on the end would be WAY bigger.
Don't forget to do all your due diligence with zoning and building department requirements, easements, HOA rules and deed restrictions.

I'd build it yourself. The model I looked at was poorly constructed. YMMV.

I had them build one for me. Everyone but my wife thinks I can fix or repair anything. She doesn't, but she is usually pressuring me to get something done on her time table. Mine is a Tuff Shed, so I don't think that there was even an option to build it myself, unless I compiled my own materials list. I also had it built for about $3100, which is your parts price. I really doubt I would have saved enough money to make it worthwhile to construct it myself. Besides, carpentry is not my thing. I do it, when I have to, but really, I am a mechanical and welding type of guy.

Build yourself. If I'm not mistaken when you use their designs they will pull everything off the shelves for you and have it ready to go when you show up.

Build it yourself. Use the spare $$ to buy tools to put in it.
Personally I would look into the metal buildings. They are lower cost and maintenance and a quality unit will last your lifetime.
http://www.muellerinc.com/building/prefab_kits.php
This is where I bought mine.
Don't forget that with the metal building you will need to construct your own foundation (concrete, dirt, or wood) so that is an adder.

The HD price does not include a lot of "extras" (window, insulation, shelving, floor ?).

There are some tricky cuts, so you will want to get a decent power miter saw. I would splurge and get a pneumatic nailer also. Pay the extra and use stainless steel nails.

Looks like a fun project, but unless you are a good carpenter, or have one helping, I would guess 3 to 4 days.

Use solid color or semi-transparent stain on the exterior. A hand held sprayer and roller will make the job go faster.

Think of it this way. If someone came up to you and said here are the materials and plans. I'll give you $3500 to build this for me. Would you do it? I'd be all over it.
Or put another way, by saving $3500 you can buy the concrete pad, a window unit A/C, a TV and tools for it.

$3500 also is enough to have a really good time in Vegas (hookers and blow)

Damn, is that what materials cost these days? Ouch.

Is a 256 sq ft shed under the limit for what needs permit and tax assessed in your area? That's my criteria anymore with regards to adding additional outbuildings to our place.

I would build it myself at this stage in my life as I have more time than money.

build it! I built a 20x12 with a loft. I opted to leave a small section of 2nd floor out. I use a step ladder to access when needed. no outside access or stairs required. I think I spent $3200 including a new framing nailer and small compressor to run it. It holds a lot of stuff (keeps it out of the garage/shop!)

I might have a better pic somewhere
