Slow day today… Random post on a random day… But I found this illustration in a vintage magazine and thought I’d post it. Carriage doors rule.

A friend had a garage that had a sliding door that turned the corner and went into a pocket. Sort of like a panel door laid on it's side with only one set of rollers.

It says TOYGRO because it is a picture (rendition) of a doll house and garage.

About 20 years ago they were tearing down the old Agnew State Hospital. They had a fire house with large carriage doors. I always kick myself for not salvaging them when I had the chance.......

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but the older I (thankfully) become, the more I appreciate -- and seek -- vintage items.

Great pictures guys! It reminds me of simpler and safer times.
My grandmother had a little garage like those in the 1960s and I scratched my head wondering how they got a car like her finned 1959 Dodge Coronet inside those things.

In a recent episode of Chasing Classic Cars, Wayne went to look at a Lamborghini Miura at an old house and the guy's garage had two sliding doors at the corner of his garage--they met at the corner and were perpendicular to eachother. The one at the rear of the car turned a corner and slid along the wall parallel to the car--it was a cool looking setup and very old.

The car was cool, too.

When I was a little kid (a very long time ago) I remember my grandfather had a single car garage with carriage doors, and he always kept his car in it. He called it a "car house", not a garage.

My original garage had two 8' long panel doors that slid horizontally and curved around to the inside side wall. They acted just like overhead doors turned on their sides. Neat benefit was that the last panel had hardware that allowed it to be opened like a man door.

Wish I would have taken pictures before the tear down.

I love the look of carriage doors. A few years ago the magazine American Bungalow had a great article on the history of them and gave some resources for the hardware to make your own. There are also several companies that make roll up doors that look like carriage doors.

Here is a picture of my first home, a 1930s spanish style in N Long Beach. It had double doors. Wish I had known about this website when I was working on that garage, could have made it a lot better.

There is a two story house in our little downtown that had a small garage at one time. (garage since torn down) This house was built early - 20s or 30s. Big house so big bucks back then. When that house was empty we prowled around it. The garage had hung panel type doors with a carriage look about them. The track was curved and the doors turned and went down the side walls along the track when you opened the doors. Only one set of doors was working when I snooped. you could tell it was a "high end" installation at one time. Maybe I have pics somewhere, have to look. The garage I had at the house I rented after high school has those mid 50's flip up doors.
