A Hot Rodder’s Bench

It’s tech week over at the H.A.M.B. and one member decided to post an article on the construction of what he considers to be his ultimate work bench – complete with folding welding table. I thought it was pretty well done and figured some of you guys would get a kick out of it.

Wish id seen this before I finished up my simple little bench, probably would have done a couple things different.

Wonder how many burn marks will be in the butcher block the first time he welds on the welding part of it? Great execution, but being a relatively new welder I'll bet he didn't think of that one.

Why would he weld on the butcherblock when he has a metal welding table????
The folding welding table is on the right hand side, looks like it's made out of steel strap, the butcherblock is the main bench.

Of course he wouldn't weld on the butcher block. Maybe it wasn't clear that when I mentioned "the welding part" I meant the part he build designated for welding projects.

Maybe you've not welded enough to know that welding spatter goes a fair distance from where you're actually laying a bead. Little tiny beads of this spatter are very likely to end up landing on the butcher block.

That will only add to the patina of a real working bench. :thumbup:

I just purchased a 72" bench very similar to this one, but it has two jack-screws that move the top up and down so it can be used as a bench or a desk.

There are several more at an industrial salvage yard in Phoenix located at the southeast corner of 28th Street and Washington in Phoenix.

Talk to Richard if you want one for $150 (they are about $1600 new)

They come with fluorescent lighting that's adjustable. Capacity according tot he manufacturer is 600 lbs
