Typically when I bring up Best Made on The Garage Journal, I’m left with a bunch of comments that reduce the company to an overpriced fashion retailer. And maybe those detractors have a point, but I can’t help myself – I’m a sucker for good design and the folks at Best Made do such a good job with the visual aspect of their products and projects, that I just don’t think about “value” quite as diligently as maybe I should.

In any case, Best Made just teamed with Gerstner to make the above pictured special edition 41D box. I’m in absolute love with it.

Oh man, oh man.... I think I would trade in all my steel toolboxes for this. They do have a knack for making you forget how much their stuff costs.

I bought a Gerstner box last summer. It was one of their smaller ones and I am very happy with it. Well made and I can't think of anything negative to say about it. Money IS an object, though. These boxes are very expensive and by the time I got mine into my garage up here in Canada the price had really gone up. This wasn't Gerstner's fault . It is just the way it is when importing something into Canada from the U.S.A. The shipping alone was $ 115. Given the option, I would have opted for a slower delivery service at a lower cost. I would have been fine with waiting a couple of weeks for it. I didn't really need UPS delivery in 3 days. Then there was exchange on the dollar...brokerage fees..yadda yadda... A guy up here has to really really want something before ordering because it's going to cost big. At the end of the day I'm glad I bought it. I don't buy myself very many presents. Well, except for tools. But they're a necessity, right ? ;-)

For ones that truly want a Gerstner on the cheap, keep an eye out for the leather covered Gerstners. They can be bought relatively cheap when the leather is shot on them. Peel the leather off, sand everything down, and either cover them in new leather, or sand everything down and refinish the wood. The leather covered Gerstners do not have top quality wood underneath the leather, but refinished, they look fantastic.

I don't either..I also know that I don't own nice enough stuff to go in one of those boxes..

but I looked at the tool section on that site..

Now I am trying to rationalize the need for Kevlar scissors and a tactical pen.

So how about a company that survived two world wars and multiple police actions? And made it through the Great Depression.

Agreed. And the one straight from Gerstner looks better to boot IMO.

I have a leather covered Gerstner 42 at work and a 92XL with matching B92XL base in walnut at my personal home machine shop. I just checked the current price on the 92XL chest and base combo. $2500 :eyecrazy:

i love and have much faith in gerstner.
i dont have any that survived WWI but most of mine have survived the great depression and WWII.

I love my Gerstner chest. And yes, it made it through WWII- while helping to support the war effort.

One thing Best Made does WAY WAY better than Gerstner is market their goods. The photos on the Gerstner site are horrible next to the photos on the Bestmade site, even for the same chest.

Don't think I would keep my machine shop stuff in a chest with white felt, though- that would get dirty instantly.

While Best Made charges a tremendous up-charge for a few stylistic changes, at least they start with a quality product. That is more than can be said for a lot of brands that cater to fashion.
