Great Garage Makeovers

So the editors of Wood Magazine contacted us a few months ago and asked if we would help them out on a new print magazine they were working on. It sounded interesting, so we volunteered and quickly pointed them to some of our favorite members on the forum. The folks at Wood Magazine took that ball and ran like hell. Some of you already know this story as your garages are featured in the magazine. In fact, many of the features found in this first issue came from right here – garagejournal.com.

Coming from WOOD, you’d think that most of the content would focus on our wood working brothers, but that’s not the case. They did a great job of covering all aspects of garages and garage organization. There are loads of ideas from floor to the ceiling; entertainment garages and man caves to hardworking garages for the grease mechanics and the sawdust makers.  These are real garages and real people–the kind of neighbors like you who roll up the garage door and expect the neighbors to drop by.

In any case, pick up an issue if you get a chance. This particular issue  is scheduled to be on the newsstands on Feb. 16. Two familiar outlets will be Lowe’s and The Home Depot ($6.95 retail). Or, you can order a copy from

http://www.woodstore.net/woodbooks1.html

The editors are already planning another issue of Great Garage Makeovers. If you know of a worthy garage project for inclusion, send an e-mail to  [email protected].

And don’t forget to mention garagejournal.com!

Would anyone be willing to mail me a copy?

I tried ordering online but they will not accept payment from a non-US paypal account (even if linked to your cc):headscrat:(

Obviously, I'd send you the funds to cover purchase & postage & I'd be happy to send additional $ to cover paypal fees so you are not out of pocket:)

Saw it at Sprawlmart yesterday! I hope they make another edition soon, say about once every 2-4 months would be great! There are a lot of good ideas for people just starting out on their garages/shops!

On behalf of the publication editor, Karl Voss, and myself, we just wanted to let you know what a great experience we had scouring Garage Journal for shops and shop techniques for our recently published newsstand special Great Garage Makeovers. It was an absolute pleasure working with the shop owners we showcased in this publication as well as working with Marci on contacting shop owners without invading their privacy. A special thanks to all the great contributors for our requests (and re-requests) for photography. Our publishing standards for photography are quite high, and we wanted to make sure we showed your shop in the best light (bad pun). I’m still drawling over Kent Van Idersine’s “Snake Pit”, Tony and Kathy Munshi’s man cave, Trevor Dyck’s foam drawer tool organizers, and David Worley’s flame-painting technique. You guys and gals sure know how to outfit a garage, and now through your efforts, so will a lot of others.
We are already looking into doing a second publication of this title if the first one does well on the newsstand. If you have a great looking shop, a unique shop project, or something that helps organize your tools or supplies we’d love to see your images. You can send them to me at the email address listed below.
Garage Journal is an excellent site with great people. Thanks for the opportunity to work with forum members to show the world your shop. We look forward to working with more of you again in the future.

So how about asking the publisher to post or link to the photo's here? Having been a pulisher/editor before, I know they want the newsstand sales, but by showing some of the photo's here they can create an even bigger buzz, plus "re-pay" the site and it's members for the favour!

Well, allow me to introduce myself.

That's my decidedly humble "Crate Workbench" on page 89. I've never posted here because, until recently, I didn't have a garage, just a basement shop where I had to stash an awful lot of tools and car parts and the usual junk. So I cooked up that bench and I was so pleased with how much stuff it held and how much easier it made my projects that I had to send it in.
Karl Voss was great to work with and I really think the GGM edition has many great ideas, (much better than mine).

I just moved that workbench into an honest-to-God 16'x24' garage, along with a Triumph TR8 I'm starting to restore. I've got a fair number of things that still need doing in the garage, but it's coming along and I'll post some photos soon, I hope.

This is a great board. I've really enjoyed reading it.

Little did I know that when I put VCT down in my garage and posted a few pics on GJ, that I would be featured in this magazine! Carl was great to work with. My garage is the $340 VCT floor...it's still holding up great!

Not only does the magazine have a lot of great ideas (not as many as this site though) but you get some close up pics and get to see Jack Olsen without his hat on. :lol_hitti

Guess I'm going to have to look harder - Lowes had none, & HD had what appears to be a previious issue - display till Feb 6 - for $12! Got it anyway - lots of cool shops & ideas - at least for the "wood" tools!

I picked up a copy at CVS on my way to worklast night. I've already read it cover to cover. Very cool stuff. Gives me a lot of ideas and dreams about how to set up my garage. If I can ever get it built that is.

There are a handful of GJ guys featured in the issue. Mine is kind of the runt of the bunch, but I think it appealed to the editors because pretty much anyone with a two-car and a little bit of cash could follow in my footsteps.

I was proud to be in it, but I think the best parts of it are the tips and ideas that they break into the different theme-driven sections.

There are always long lead times in magazine publishing. It was almost a year ago that they talked to me. The funny thing for my garage was how much changed in it between then and now. It looks pretty much the same, at a casual glance, but all of the big components changed in that space of time.

Back then:

Now:

Same tile, different benches, cabinets and layout.

(I hope they don't mind me linking to their art. Click on it if you want to buy the magazine online.)

An even better visual/memory test is to look at the cover garage and note the changes they made to it so that the text on the cover wouldn't look as jumbled. It's not unusual to do this, in order to make a good cover shot, but it was my wife who noticed the things that were 'erased' from the garage to simplify it as a backdrop for the text.

Proof positive that the best working garages are always evolving. I hate to attach anything to my walls because I know that I will be constantly readjusting my space for the maximum benefit. Very rarely does anything stay where I originally put it. And I'm less likely to move something that is attached to the wall. Jack's garage is a prime example of an evolving garage - it was worthy of the magazine but we know how much better it is now. Keep those two pictures Jack - and a year from now you can post them with another new one. And your garage will be different and it will be even better.

Like everyone else has said, Carl Voss was more than a pleasure to work with. (I had the barrel bench  )

As we know, Jacks redo of his redo, is perfect fodder for the next issue

Many thanks to GJ for giving the garage-a-holics a place to be somewhat normal amongst our fellow holics

Barnes and Noble has them in the wood working section of the magazines.

Finally picked one up, stopped at another lowe's on the other side of town while I was out that way, and they had one copy sitting on the shelf, must have been a pretty good seller..

Read through most of it. Pretty good stuff, nice to see some GJ members hard work in actual print..

Although I was surprised not seeing "The M House" or BMWPower's garage in there as they are photo worthy and very well organized.

I picked one up too - great magazine to have, enjoyed several of the articles as well as seeing some of the great garages from here in Print..

Personally, I think it'd make a helluva monthly magazine -

If anyone has their copy with them, could you post the mfg's link for the PVC ceiling write up they did? I left my copy at home and wanted to do a little digging today at work.

Thanks

It was Ag-Tuff, and the ceiling material is the Phase-2® PVC AG-TUFF. My garage is the one that has it already installed in the pictures, then they did the show and tell install for the magazine shoot.
