Hello,

after having a little bit of patience and waiting for the right deal to surface I was able to pick up a great deal on a 2 stage compressor used for around the same price as a decent single stage one.

It didn't look very pretty, but I got a hell of a deal on a Snap On Signature Series BRA7180V, 80 gallon, 7.0 HP, 175 max. PSI Compressor.

Specs:
Horsepower 7
Tank, gal. 80
Tank Style Vertical / 2-stage
Electrical Req. 208/230V, 1-phase
Amp Req. 40 @ 208/230V
Mag Starter Yes
Hour Meter Yes
Auto Tank Drain Yes
Air Delivery (SCFM @ PSI) 23.5 @ 175
Max. PSI 175

Anyone out there work on/with one of these? It came out of a body shop with 400 hours on the meter. Took about 2 days of cleaning up layers of dust/paint/bondo, but it's started right up and holds air.

I ordered some rebuild parts directly from the manufacturer, just to be sure.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Here are some before photos....I'll try and get the after photos tonight.....

Those compressors are made by Devilbis... hope you didn't order from SnapOn..?

No I don't think so.....the 800 listed on the actual compressor calls into Brama Inc, and the message says "The Big Red Air Machine"

I thought Brama was a bunch of ex Snap On Guys who went out on their own....

Anyway, in case you didn't read the post, it wasn't new, it was used. I picked it up for around $600. I would never pay retail on something 'new' like this, even from Snap-On.....

well, the motor size, pump size, and specs dont seem like it is a true 7hp unit, but for $600, I think you did very well.

Do you mean the motor look small or do you mean the whole unit? The shole unit sits about 7 feet tall. I can't get my arms around it, The base has to be about 26" in diameter....

I don't know how you can tell from looking at a picture its HP, but the sure way to know is to look at the tag on the motor it should have one. The only thing that casts doubt on the hp rating to me is that it's not a normal rating used ie. it should be a 7.5hp motor a 7hp is not standard.

Tell us the FLA and running amps for the motor off the tag and we can go from there. Lots of the fake motors will have SPL stamped ( or nothing ) in the HP area of the tag.

William....

Sounds like a custom motor made for the manufacture by baldor. They seem to have rounded down a few of the specs (probably the 7.5hp to a 7hp and the 1725 rpm to 1700 rpm also) ( and the frame is a small size for a 7.5 motor) . The running amps show around 7hp depending on the pf and efficiency you use for the motor.

I think you got a good deal on a 7.5 hp compressor :) It's not a Quincy, but it's not a
"Home despote" special either.

Thanks.

I bought it based on the specs. I didn't want a single stage IR or Home Depot 'special' just to get a compressor. I knew what I wanted, I just waited until the right deal came up and took it.

Unlike most people I know, I don't just buy the first thing I see...I shop around, compare prices and look for a great deal. This can mean new or used. That's why I can afford some more of the luxury items you find around my shop. If I can get a 'higher' quality/level item for the same price of the lower quality item (features/specs/etc) just because it's used, well then I get it. Unless it's a peice of junk. 9 out of 10 times it's in perfect working condition, and hardly used/abused.

I do this with everything. You would be surprised how much you can save over a few years.....

How is the compressor working out for you? I'm working on a potential purchase if I can score a deal like yours. How has it treated you now that you've had it for a while?

Runs like a champ. I hardly know it's running. I really like the bleed off after every cycle, you can see the water running out of the tube. This is a big sell point for me living down here where humidity can be at 100% for days on end.

The duty cycle is quick and using air tools is a breeze. I would recommend a ball valve and a heavy duty air pressure regulator. This pumps out a lot of pressure. The ball valve is so that you can keep air in the tank while you are not using it.

If it has more than 500 hours, buy the rebuild kit and some oil. It doesn't cost all that much and it was a snap to do. Just follow the torque settings.

I hope this helps.

I got the same compressor. Mine only has 50 hours on it though It is a good compressor. I can run just about anything off of it and it keeps up. the sandblaster puts it to the test though but it will level out at about 80psi and stay there. But any thing else it will turn on and off while im still working. I run a DA and paint gun off of it quite a bit along with a diegrinder and air saw.
