I have an older kennedy roll cab brown with I think 7 drawers, I am not sure of the model off the top of my head, I am missing the lock, now I see what to order for a replacement however, how does this lock work? I dont see anything inside the chest that it would latch to to make it lock if you know what I mean, and I think it just takes a round cylinder lock ? looks like the ones that have the hook are for the machinist chest and the ones with a tab for the mid chest, so I am confused and I dont mean to sound stupid, I have been debating ordering one of those muti bars that latch to the front

Pics of the roller? Over the years different mechanisms were used so without a positive ID hard to determine how it would lock. For some, having the top drawer closed locked the rest via a linkage inside. A simple tab for the top drawer keeps it fully to the rear and locked the rest.

other methods abound...

Outlaw is right - in the past I have seen 297's with a hook for the top drawer and also a rod that does to the back of the tool box. If you can figure out what version you have, sometimes you can find new ones on Ebay. Or just call up Kennedy and ask.

I haven't sorted them all out yet, but I've got a bunch of Kennedy locks (with keys) from messing around with some used cabinets I got. I think I've got the 297 and 277 both. I can check for you next week. If you're not in a hurry, I give you one of my spares (if we determine it'll work for your box & if the lock itself is in good cond). If you want new or want to key it to existing boxes, customer service is OK at kennedy. Give 'em the box no. and serial no and they'll set you up with the lock (they're pretty cheap).

Also for liners (top and drawer) MSC has sales of 35% off for 5 items. I've gotten a bunch of kennedy accessory stuff that way. I have a Kennedy restore thread on here somewhere. I always change out caster wheels because if you buy used you usually get thrashed wheels if they've seen heavy use in a metal shop. But then I like to restore old boxes. Zen and the Art of Tool Box Resto. and all that.

that would be great if you could check, I havnt been on here much of late, I am stumped on how this box would lock even with a lock, there has to be some sort of linkage, however or if someone could check that has the cam style lock with no tab which what I believe this takes, if you could just look inside your box and tell me whats there??

I'm not understanding why you can't remove the top drawer or two and look at yours? it should be pretty obvious as the drawers are likely to have some indication of the mating locking bits, and the linkages should be visible.

Assuming you have friction slides and not roller slides, there is a black spring clip on each side, lift the forward end with a screw driver, and the slide can be pushed back slightly. then the drawer comes right out.

There is a lock without a cam on some of the kennedy rolling boxes. I've gone one somewhere. Haven't had a chance to check, but I'll try to get to it before week's end.

Try to take out your drawers though. It's easy. Take a look at the sizes. Use a thin piece of sheetmetal or hacksaw blade or pick or small pry or scraper or whatever. Metal tabs on the sides in the slides.

well I was going to do the drawers today but I was on craigslist a local guy had a versa cart with a nice mid craftsman box and a nice top craftsman box , the craftsman is nice vintage stuff, and he wanted 260.00 so I snagged it all, now the only minor issue is the base cabinet is 29 wide my top is 27, now my next kennedy question is can I buy a side box that faces front instead of to the side, I assume so just havnt looked yet and maybe you guys would have idea where I could find one. And my old base is missing the rod that would attach to the lock and go to the back of the drawer or at least thats the way my new one is, now I have my keys so I can lock my stuff up. I think I got one hell of a deal, oh and it came with a 4 inch wilton anvil headed vise as well
