I've never bought a "factory reconditioned" power tool. Are they generally the same quality as "like new", or is there always a chance that they may have put a Band-Aid on an abortion?

In my experience the factory ensures that the refurbed tool meets new tool specifications. Very often the refurb will carry a new tool warranty. In some cases the tool was never used at all and only the carrying case or outside box was damaged. In those cases, they'll still sell the tool as refurbished.

I just got one (Ryobi) from CPO. It looks brand new, and works well.
They are branded with RECON on them.
Only complaint was no packing material, CPO said they receive them direct from the manufacturer in sealed boxes.

I had good and bad results from CPO refurb.

BAD: Milwaukee 3/8 impact, the anvil did not turn, made noise and the nose cone looked like the owner before used it for a hammer. Sent that back ASAP.

GOOD Bought a Black And Decker 40V weed eater for my Dad, Thing looks new and works awesome. Paid 90$, cheaper than a NEW 20 volt trimmer

So really that is 50/50 for me, But they have a good return policy.

I've bought from CPO before. A few thiings worked fine like new, but two times I did get stuff that LOOKED good but did fail very shortly after using it. Anything refurbed can have problems that their testing/repair process can MISS. Now CPO is a good company, so I would still buy from them if you have a good price on what you want, but DO test it out right away and well, so if there are any problems, you can quickly send it back to them. - Paul

As previously stated, a lot of the tools carry the same warranty as new, but some of them don't. The Rigid refurbished tools are not eligible for the "lifetime service agreement" and the Milwaukee refurbished tools are warrantied for one year, not five.

Both of reconditioned tools looked and worked like new out of the (plain packaging) box. Other difference between recon and new was a "Recon" sticker that I think also has a new serial number on the unit. These were a Bosch drywall screwgun and a Rotozip.

Depending on the brand, you might even stand a higher chance of getting a tool that works. Some brands (like Milwaukee) test every tool that leaves their factory (probably just a quick power on/off though). Some other brands (usually cheaper ones) don't. Refurbished products tend to be thoroughly tested before being resold (verify on/off, power, etc).

Can you take it the the local authorized repair facility for warranty work? Way a Dewalt drill to the Dewalt repair facility without a hassle ?

Absolutely. It's still a DeWalt, so they will still fix it. Will have to pay for repairs outside of warranty again though.

Many of the brands in which the refurb. has the same warranty as new, they already had a 1 year warranty on new tools, and offer that same 1 year on refurbs. Good way to save a few bucks.

Companies that have logner warranties on new tools tend to not offer that long of a warranty on refurb tools.

i bought the m18 fuel drill and impact combo from CPO off ebay.. it was my first Milwaukee purchase (which led to MANY more) $209 shipped to my door. couldnt be happier with them.. they saved me close to $200 - (no longer $209 now) and the tools were in slightly used, but very good condition.. the catch was they only came with a one year warranty - but my thought was if they held up for a year they would be fine anyway.. i wouldnt worry about buying more refurbs from them.

good deal on that makita radio.... they sound killer for those small speakers. the ac adapter is garbage if you rough it up on jobsites. have a backup or keep it running off a battery all the time. makita guys love it. works on old pod or new lithium batteries

I have bought many refurbished bostitch air tools from CPO with great success.

I tried a Milwaukee impact recently and the there wire wires sticking out of the two halves of the plastic casing. Of course the plastic casing wasn't fitting well either. I decided the cost savings wasn't worth the risk of unknown battery life either. Might be worth it for a bare tool.

I have bought many 'reconditioned' Bosch tools from CPO. These are tools that were returned, not brought back for service. Almost every single tool I bought was brand new, and if it was used it was used once maybe. The only non-Bosch tool I bought from CPO was a Dewalt compressor, and when that came it was clearly used some before they got it. I contacted them about it and they sent me a replacement. There is no reason NOT to use CPO reconditioned, IMO.

Anyone buy electric chainsaw from CPO with good results ??

Someone here on GJ had great things to say about Makita electric chainsaws but I was looking at more reasonable price like Sun Joe brand at $71 ?? Heck there is Remington for $47 but not sure it's any good ??

The majority of my power tools are refurbished from CPO. Early on, I had an issue where a Milwaukee M18 battery quit working right after the warranty expired. What I do now is buy the refurbished bare tool from CPO, then I buy new batteries. Save me money off the new price, and I get brand new batteries.

The Makita electric are known as among the best electric chainsaws you can buy. They are pricey. Frankly, I'd rather have a gas one though. - Paul

Earlier this year I bought the M18 Fuel Sawzall bare tool reconditioned with no issues so far. I planned on buying the non-Fuel bare tool new, but figure the reconditioned Fuel was about the same price. Why not?

You're buying peace of mind there and nothing wrong with that. But I think you are taking that one experience too seriously. CPO has a lot of good reviews, you just got unlucky one time I think. But as I said, if you are willing to pay more for peace of mind there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This is from someone who has bought probably 10 or so Bosch battery tools from CPO without a single issue (battery or otherwise).

I bought a reconditioned Homelite electric chainsaw from CPO for like $35 and it works great. It's my go-to saw for anything under 4-5", perfect for thinning hedges or trimming small growth in trees. As long as there's an outlet nearby at least ...

I bought a couple of Bosch power tools from CPO at the beginning of the year, a circular saw and an oscillating tool, both looked brand new and functioned perfectly. The saw came with a brand new blade and carry bag. The oscillating tool came with the blade holder and some extra blades along with an allen wrench to change the blades. I would definitely buy from them again.
