I just picked up a 5 gal bucket of Purple Power Industrial degreaser for $20 at Advance Auto and was checking to see if anyone has used this brand before and what there thoughts were?

I've used Simple Green and liked it but it was $15 a gal so I figured I had nothing to lose buy trying Purple Power.

Works like any other degreaser to me. A little more aggressive than Simple Green though.

Becareful of aluminum and brass parts, it will eat them if you let them soak for long periods of time. It will remove paint to if sprayed on with to strong of a solution or left on for an excessive time. Also protect you eyes and hands, it's lye based. The slick feeling it has is it taking the oils from your skin and making soap. Your hands will be the driest and cracked they have ever been

As a plus, it's an awesome degreaser, it's lye. There is a reason they use lye in hot tanks.

No harm to iron/steel

It won't kill the grass, it love it.

Going to use it to clean up a vise I picked up so no aluminum and I will be removing the paint also so that will be a bonus

Also if I soak the vise in it can it be reused if I strain it ?

I use it all the time for greasy stuff and as a tire+wheel cleaner. Good stuff. I'd recommend using a respirator with it though if you're spraying it.

Oh and I forgot! It's not a spray on and wipe off cleaner. It must be rinsed off with water because it is extremely corrosive to metals.

I used it in spray form to clean the tiles in the tub. Soap scum is a b itch to get off and this stuff eats it up

Need to call your local store. I guess they're closing it out, the manager at my store said he sold the gal. jugs off for something stupid like 50 cents each.

The gal jugs were $1 off at $4.79. Don't think my store was closing them out $25 for the 5 gal was the normal price.

It was $15 a 5GL pail a couple of months ago for commercial customers here. They restocked it so I don't think they are clearancing it here.

Don't use it on show quality rims, it'll destroy the finish in nothing flat. I made the mistake one time of using it on my street car to clean a power steering blow out at the track so I could drive the car home. It killed all my anodized and polished parts in literally a few seconds before I hosed it off. When it comes to engines and degreasing I only use simple green now, but if I got a knarly oily greasy mess with nothing to worry about destroying I'll break out PP.

We used a bit today from a 5gal pale I got a few years back it was the same thing from the auto parts place great deal. Very good product. We have a our parts washer for some stuff, but it's great in a spray bottle for equipment and stuff that just needs cleaning...

It's like any other degreaser as far as I can tell.. none of em ever REALLY work as well as you wish they would. I found that using a cheap $10, 1 gallon pump sprayer works great with it. It'll deliver a much more even and thinner coat, instead of just spraying a whole bunch on with a handheld sprayer that is all just gonna run off anyway. Makes the product go a lot further, and makes coating and recoating a lot quicker and easier.. the wand on the pump sprayer is great for reaching areas, and the adjustable tip can get you a real nice fine spray instead of wasting half of what you bought.. been on a pump sprayer kick myself, and just bought another to keep wheel cleaner in. Bought a gallon of concentrate Meguiars wheel cleaner that I just do a 50/50 mix with water.. much better with the sprayer, instead of buying individual bottles that only last 3 washes before being empty from reasons stated above.. the $10 investment in a pump sprayer is well worth it IMO for the individual chemicals you use a lot of.

Pretty much everyone else has covered it's pluses and minuses...

I use half a gallon per huge load in the washer to clean my greasy work clothes, wash it again in regular laundry soap and rinse very well. Works great for this.

Cleans nastiness off tires well, but it will leave the tires looking dry and brown so be ready to follow up with some tire shine.

Don't let it sit on metal parts or it will tarnish them.

Works great to clean grime from the shower tub and clear slow drains.

I usually buy the 5 gallon buckets from advance when I have a bunch of speedperks rewards built up - you can combine speedperks with the typical promo codes like TRT30 or TRT41

So it sounds like its good stuff. I'll be soaking a Wilton vise in it for a few days to clean off a bunch of dried grease and grime and to take of some black paint that someone put on it. Then I'll wire wheel it and repaint it and then get some good use out of it.

I'll post pictures when I'm done.

Also will use it to clean up a 1940's atlas drill press I picked up that's pretty grimy and dirty so I can restore it for shop use.

Now to fine some Evapo Rust for a good price.

Friend of mine tried using Purple Power in his ultrasonic cleaner with a chainsaw carb. What little that was left of the carb was very clean.

I used it to clean up a lot of the internal parts (oil pan, windage trays, oil pickup, oil cooler, etc) on a recent engine rebuild and was very pleased. I filled a large plastic tub about 1" deep and used a cheap paintbrush to continually wash the surface. On rare occasion I would also use a wire brush to agitate the surface. Rinsed everything in hot water and then sprayed with WD40 as rust preventative before re-assembling the engine.

If you put it in a spray bottle make sure its not windy because the mist isn't fun to breathe in

Yep, I've used it (and SuperClean which is very similar) and used correctly it's great stuff. As others have said, exercise caution because it will eat aluminum and pot metal if left soaking.

It was the only easily available product I could find that would strip 30 year old baked on cosmoline from the engine compartment and undercarriage on a resto I was working on years ago. Great stuff, just rinse thoroughly! (And dont breath it in)
