Yesterday I was in a local hardware store here in Slovenia. It was an odd private store which are kind of rare (e.g. not a big name like Bauhaus or Obi which are otherwise very common...). I was quite surprised to have seen brand new "NIV" vises for sale, made here in Slovenia in a city called Černomelj. Pretty interesting they still make these. It's old-school heavy duty continental Europe/German style vise, similar to Leinen or Schlegel EMF or Gressel.
~300€ seems pretty good for a 150mm wide vise. I think that's about 250€ without the VAT (if you buy as a company, you don't pay VAT). I have no idea if these are nodular/ductile steel, there's no info online but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.
Didn't pull them off the shelf just to take a good photo. But here's how a classic one looks:
I found the manufacturers website but not much extra info on the vise. They also make a swivel type vise. Despite the hammered-look paint, based on how it looks I'm pretty sure these are fully machined from billet steel. Looks like a proper alternative to the chinese offerings (though only 80mm wide, seems like a locksmith vise...). Maybe they'd make larger ones if I'd contact them.
Some photos from the website
Pretty happy to know there's still some decent manufacturing made here. There were 200€ 150mm chinese vises next to it, and the quality difference is obvious. I love these NIV ones are still made in the traditional rounded casts, not some angular modern design!
