Tools of Japan

About Japan made combination pliers, diagonal cutting pliers, cable cutter pliers, how hard is the edge? I only found an information about KingTTC pliers at about 54-58 hardness level compared to Knipex that stand at 58-61 hardness level.

I’ve had overall good results with various Japanese manufacture’s cutters. I reach for my Victor Plus cutters a lot, and they are plenty hard and tough. I’ve had some Merry cutters with very soft edges, and some which can cut nails with no problem.

I find Knipex is pretty hard to beat and some of their tools are just peerless.

Hioki IR4053 insulation tester. Kyoritsu seem to be the most popular insulation testers here but I couldn't determine the COO and I wanted the PV test feature. It was cheaper to buy it from Japan via eBay than locally.

I am also thinking of replacing my Brymen multimeter with a Hioki one as the screen keeps playing up. The Brymen hasn't lasted long enough, I don't even use this stuff for my job.

i wish they had a badge that showed you if it's a 3/8" in a 1/4" body so you could tell that a glance.

they should have that next to the other badges. the only way i see to tell is to look at H (9.5mm vs 13.7mm).

The 1/4" body part numbers always start 272. The 3/8 drives in 1/4" bodies always end in -3/8. For example, a non-flex head will have a part number 2725Z-3/8.

I received a 1/4" drive 2725Z in a P2285Z set from Japan last week. It is really nice. Much smoother with less back drag than my 1/4" LP90.

Thank you for sharing the pdf!

The quick-release button shape is a little different between those two body sizes; 1/4" body with 3/8" square to the left, regular 3/8" to the right.

So many 3/8" in 1/4" ratchets but no still no 1/2" in 3/8" ratchet :(

Although the full size 1/2" quick release does look pretty nice!1677797648400.png

great koken finally updating their ratchets. if only they could bring the 72t 1/4 out already, also it looks like you can upgrade your existing ratchets with the qd, just like the 72t mechanism.

Shinwa are one of the better known Japanese rule brands. The bigger / better quality rules are made in Japan, but the cheaper ones are made in China.36287FD8-3BBD-40F5-9DE1-4DBCD62252CF.jpeg

I have some rules by Minemura, which are all made in Japan, and one by Fisher, which also is.

A local woodworking specialist always keeps a selection of these rules in stock. The actual makers seem to vary, but the quality (and style) does not. All are made in Japan.

I just bought a 30cm one, which was supposed to be made in japan according to all the sites i read it on, buuuut no. China.
However! The quality is superb, even thou its made in china.

@Loga_3, I looked up both your and my rules in the Shinwa catalog. They are both made to JIS Grade 1, and can be certified via the Japan Calibration Service System. It looks like Shinwa is keeping their overseas models up to good standards.

Came across my Vessel Impact Driver model 2400. Love that it has a case with it and was disappointed to see that the current ones don't seem to include one.

Really liking the finish on these tools. May be time to add some German to the mix.

I just picked up a set of these. I’m very impressed. Although some of the smaller sizes are overkill for torque. Careful tightening those 10mm bolts! lol. I can see them being great for access as well like deeply buried dash bolts.

Getting those back in may prove the challenging part 🙃

Yup, I don't think it would take much to twist off a 10mm if you aren't paying attention!

I wonder if the anvils in the existing 72t ratchets can be swapped with the new quick release ones?
knowing Koken and their attention to detail, I can almost guarantee they can be swapped just like the 72t anvil. also judging by the videos and presentations they look identical, it makes sense for koken to not design a whole new mechanism just for a quick disconnect.

After reading the hype about the Wiha 7148C Centrofix bit holder being superior for holding Western and Japanese bits, I ordered one. It lives up to ~99% of the hype and I definitely recommend it for Japanese bits in hand drivers! The Centrofix allows very minimal bit wobble and maybe only .5mm fore and aft play with either style bits, and came with the Phillips #2 bit shown. It's much better than the Anex AEH-100 bit holder I recently got in.

image_67180545.JPG

I've set it up for my Anex 397 handle. A standard 9.35mm bit bottoms out in the 397 at 40mm. The 397's detents fully engage Western and Japanese bits at 15mm in without them bottoming out. So I fashioned little spacers out of worn-out 4mm dia Phillips bit shafts. Dropping the long spacer into the Anex lets the Centrofix bit holder bottom out and fully engage with the handle's retention mechanism (a spring?) for a very secure-feeling fit.

Koken 1/2" quick spinner 4756Z

Got this the other day, it was an extra I threw on a Zoro order to take advantage of a 20% off coupon. I wanted the 3/8" to 1/2" adapter but they didn't have it in stock, so I just got the straight 1/2" instead. I'll probably grab the adapter from DRPD at some point in the future.

Haven't really used it much yet but I think I'll probably keep it on my long Cornwell ratchet since the detent on the ratchet anvil is pretty stiff. If I stick a socket on the quick spinner, it makes it easier to swap sockets and the spinner will reliably stay on the ratchet every time. YMMV on other applications.

Apologies for the poor hand modeling, I just finished a clutch hydraulic job.

Does anybody have any experience with this Tone ratchet? Seen it on Amazon.jp and thought it looked pretty cool.

Yeah I bought one when I was over in Japan a couple of months ago. Quite a light ratchet. Cool design and the swivel head is useful. Only issue is that it's a pain to switch directions using one hand.

I'm not about to rush out and grab the 3/8 version.

No experience other than fiddling with one at a store.

I don't think I've posted this before...
Another blatant example of TONE misleading buyers by putting "Japan" on their products.
TONE doesn't manufacture them; it has been sold under different brand names for several years now.

Some pics from 2019 attached
Its a 72t x 2 = 144t (stacked double-pawl mechanism)
Couple things to note:
-the swivel action of the head is controlled by detents
-the head height/thickness and turn-lock ring makes for a slightly bulky head

I have 2 of those Tone ratchets. They are ok at best. They work fine but are a bit fiddly. I think they would be great for production or similar jobs, but I dont care for them for use on mixed random jobs. They seem well made.

I didn't purchase that specific Tone ratchet because it was hollow. I went with the TRH31 w/ hold mechanism. Excellent fit and finish. Good heft in the hand.

I am looking for a socket & wrench set for the truck that would ideally have a decent 1/4" and 1/2" or a wide range of socket options. Because I want it for the truck, I'm looking at ones with plastic cases. I think I may end up with a Bahco set but I was interested to see that the Bahco plastic cases look almost identical to the plastic cases from Tone from Japan. I assume the cases are made at the same factory. The hinges are identical. The locking clasps are the same. The printing on the grey insert is the same.

Bahco S106
