Bless Me Pickers for I have Sinned. In my push to get my little shop rearraigned to hold my new lathe and shaper, I had forgotten to hang my Picker of the year, 2022 award. Well, I made sure to take care of that today, and it is in a place of pride, right next to where I stand at the bench:

Outlaw, you were asking about the little hammer? I put pics in the hammer thread.

Responded to a Facebook ad ,and among other highlights it was less than a mile from here. Guy was looking to off Grandpa's toolbox since he isn't a mechanic. Paid his asking price and came home with this. I posted it all in a Postimage Gallery as it it large and I will be sorting for many evenings, and taking more photos. https://postimg.cc/gallery/D1RWzTy

@chenry318 - nice score on the Walden set! and yes, it's top-shelf stuff.
Am I correct that these sockets are 50's era? They remind me of some random indestro sockets I have.
Several garage sales today. Walked up on the third one as a Grandma was setting up a table with grandma stuff. I told her I look for tools ... she says you've come to right place! There were several tables off to side, she peels back the blue tarp and I was blinded by the glare off all the chrome. Nice Snap-on metric wrench set, metric socket set, assortment of various sockets and other wrenches and two 1/2dr ratchets. Filled a box there. Last sale of the morning out in some town called Royesford, got the creeper and a bunch more assorted sockets and wrenches. The Craftsman stubbys and the kromedge tap set are like new, don't believe they've ever been used, picked them up Friday morning at a garage sale. A good haul this weekend, feels good!
You **** for @Rickster. Lots of good stuff there.

This thread really picked up this weekend. Lots of good finds coming in. I stayed home and tried to finish some projects before I end up bringing more home.

Went out this aftenoon for a late noticed sale - the guy had a super fine 1938 Jaguar in the driveway white and it looked beautiful! Not for sale however, and a bunch of good stuff in the garage was not for sale, but I did get these for $25:

31S Simplex by Desmond Stephens; 3-1/4" wide jaws, and 26-7 lbs. One chipped jaw plate, and the tail of the slide has a bunch of tiny and shallow drill divots? :dunno: but otherwise pretty decent shape.:

Simplex 1.jpg

Simplex 2.jpg

Long C Craftsman No. Drill index, and a purple insulator with "CALIFORNIA" as the only inscription - My Third purple, but this one is different from the other two:

Long C purple insulator.jpg

I believe General made these for Sears:

***ahem, please read my post #1 and please refrain from this type of photo in the future. This is exactly what I was referring to. I don't want to look at your crotch while trying to see what you posted. Do you really not have any other flat surface in the entire house, car, garage, etc where you could lay out the tools to photograph ?**
I have read it, it was just the picture I had of them, I will get a new pic tomorrow and swap them out. I will refrain from doing it in the future, many apologizes.

Nice find on the plomb wobble 1/2 drive impacts! But the real question is- did you get the craftsman red and gray mid chest pictured in the add ? Those can be pretty spendy if sold in the right arena....
I left it behind. I tried a mid box on my user Craftsman stack once and found I couldn’t see into the top of the box anymore.

I need to catch up on my awards (which I will do) I’ve been busy with a deep dive into the Snap on tool boxes I found last Easter Saturday. Off the bat though, alinc, YOU **** big time for that beautiful red handle MAC ratchet.

I know this isn’t a project type thread, however I feel I need to post some progress on one of my scores, the previously mentioned boxes. I’ve been cleaning, wet sanding, scraping, body hammering, and unbending drawer slides on this thing.

Keep in mind I live in a Townhome and my finished basement is my man cave. I rent a garage from a friend and have what I need there. That said, here are some progress photos of the BIG BOX. I am ordering one new set of drawer slides tomorrow and a lock and lid strut, and will have the missing drawer in place as well.

I won't mention the time lapse--we all succumb, at times, to misaligning the priorities that really matter...
But speaking of misaligning, I specifically misaligned that hammer bracket for a reason--face the hammer the other way and it will hang straight! And who hangs their monkey wrenches facing outward?? 90* right and the dynamic above the bracket and it will seem like it was made for it. Sheesh!

Went to my first estate sale of the year this morning. I spent $50 total, ended up with an assortment of USA vise grips, blue point tap & die, misc. Adj. wrenches, brake spring tool, flare tool, and some channellock pliers.

Many yard sales today.
I spent $35 on this Craftsman lot.
16" adjustable USA
Set of 3 Breakers (all =V=)
Flying V Ratchet
And best of all the Set of Metric Deep 3/8 drive in 6 point. (all --V--)
The breakers & ratchet are common, but the metric 6 points don't show up very often.

Went to the local "pickers" store and found a Yankees lithograph and a never before seen Rheingold Scotch Ale beer tray from 1933. My grandfather worked for Rheingold brewery in Brooklyn from the late 40's - the 70's. I like to grab Rheingold items when I see them. I can't even find this one on eBay so $15 was perfect for both of those.

I also found a box of NOS Ford parts laying in the corner. The first box I opened, my eyes about popped out of my head. It was an NOS headlight switch without fog lamps for my Foxbody SSP Mustang. These go for anywhere from $75 up to $200. I dug through a little more and so that it was all Ford parts. I brought the box to the guy and he said give me $150 for the box of parts and the tray/Yankees lithograph and I happily obliged. I came home and went through the parts and there's a bunch of NOS turn signal switches, turn signal stalks, resistors under, electrical parts, window switches etc... The best part I found without looking everything up was the fuel gauge for a 1966 Ford Mustang in a tattered FoMoCo box. Luckily the gauge is mint condition. I even put 12 volts to it and it worked. I'd say it worked out well today! Can't wait to look up the rest of the parts. PXL_20230416_151104610.jpgFox body headlamp switch 💪PXL_20230416_151147082.jpg

well, I thought we were done for the weekend, but found one that didn't post to CL yesterday. They had a vintage drill press, so figured it was worth the 15 minute trip north.

Got there, lots of vintage wrenches and stuff cluttering the driveway, tap sets, etc priced reasonable. Went into the garage to see the drill press, and it was obviously vintage, they were guessing $1k sales price. After chatting with them a bit, got the light on it to realize it was a Canedy Mfg, Chicago Heights IL. Showed them vintage machinery and ITCL to help them figure out what they had. (And bonus, no arc of shame).

So... Are you buying that drill press??? And, do they realize what it might realistically be worth? I'm guessing $1k is never, ever going to happen?

I don't attend too many "professional run" estate sales, but at the end of my yard sale trip Friday, I stopped at what was a classic hoarder house sale.
Most of the stuff was filthy & to me of no value.
One of the listing photos showed a pegboard workbench with a hatchet I was interested in, but it was gone.
I spent about an hour digging through the dross & came up with these standouts.
I expected a ripoff price & was prepared to walk away, laid the stuff down on the checkout table & the guy says,
"Looks like six dollars".
You just never know, right?
4" Proto adjustable
SK 3/8" ratchet
Snap-on 3/8 breaker, & extension (rusty)
Snap-on 1/4 sliding T, 2" extension & 1/4F x 3/8M adapter
Swanson speed square

Then on the way home stopped at a TOO to find these for $10.00
Never played quoits, but too cool to not take home with Joe the Motorists' Friend cast on the bottom.

No, definitely not buying. No space, and I think it might flip my house over from the weight. I suggested $500 is closer to reality, and they understood, also asked if I had any friends who might be interested…. I imagined only a few dozen here within driving distance might check in.

These are the mystery bits from Saturday
Counter sink, drill bit (kind of like you see in a push drill), spade bit.
_______________________________________

Saturday I went to a 2-day sale that showed bins of sockets, wrenches and other mechanic tools. I got there a few hours after opening and noted with more than a little trepidation that they were selling tools by size. Despite this, I dug through the bins for a little bit and took my finds up to see how serious they were about making sales. I think I had a couple of ratchets, two sliding Ts, a nice full metal spinner and a fist full of miscellaneous sockets. I stopped him when his tally was over $80 and he hadn’t got to the sockets yet. I separated four or five items and offered him $10 for those. He said he couldn’t go that low. I held up a ¼” drive Williams socket and ask if he was really charging $3 for each “small” socket ($5 for medium and $7 for large). He said “Yes”. We briefly discussed Estate Sale vs. eBay pricing without any resolution. I looked back at all the bins (the socket bin had over 300 sockets) and asked what the price structure would be tomorrow, implying with my body language that there was no way he was going to sell much today. He said everything would be half price. I said that was still too rich for me and he replied that after 12:00 it would be 75% off and deals would be made. I told him I would see him tomorrow afternoon.

I rolled in a little before noon and basically had the bins to myself. There had been some damage done to the selection of wrenches and drive tools but the socket bin seemed as full as the day before. I spent about an unmolested hour going through the sockets—if I had been interested in collecting late-model Bonney, I could have doubled my haul.

The same guy as yesterday had me empty my bag and told his assistant to get out the calculator and then he started dividing the sockets by size, telling the assistant to count up and charge $1 each for this group and $2 for that group. I’ve never claimed to be a math wiz, but I know 75% of $3 is 75 cents—not $1, so when the assistant counted 30 on the smalls, I told the guy that I was thinking of $10 for everything. He looked at me somewhat surprised, thought for a moment and then said “Cash”? I asked if he wanted two 5s or a 10.

The 44 items would have cost $164 the first day and $41 at 75% off.

16 Apr 23a.jpg

Starting at the top left:
Williams
Thorsen sliding T & ext
Walden
Orphans—Hex drive stud (no ball catches), Armstrong, New Britain & Husky (got in the pile by mistake)
Proto LA (and a mfd. Ext)
Plomb
Blackhawk 3/8 ratchet adapter 34976 (my favorite of the haul)
S-K
Snap-on—including several adapter dupes: A-3-G 9/32 to 3/8; MVA3 ¼ to 3/8; A-8 ¼ to 9/32; A-6 9/32 to ¼

1st pic left is a countersink, right might be a broken gimlet bit (a push drill bit should look the same on both sides) with the screw tip broken off. Next two are known as a center bit, predecessor to a spade bit, but made better holes.

OK, I know I am a sucker for these kinds of things. But looking at it I thought the 1/2 HP American made motor was worth the price.
This drill press was probably originally a variable speed Clausing that the variable speed part went out on and they converted it to a V belt drive.
But I am a little confused about the labeling (see photo), can anyone clarify? Cincinatti? also says model 1791, but all of the pictures I can find of a Clausing 1791 do not look like this. It looks like a Clausing 1690 from the pictures I can find.

As I said, I am a sucker, could not leave it behind for the five dollar price.

I'm too cheap, wouldn't see that being worth more than $200-300 if running perfectly. But it IS really nice, and someone (much closer than me) should save it!

$5??? You ****! Hopefully it runs well? I don't know anything about that thing, but it's possible someone married parts from a few different units to come up with one working one.

Debcrow, the "Cincinnati" tag may be that of the tool retailer that sold the drill. Was once common for vendors to attach their tag to items they sold.
Yup, what he said. The Cincinnati Machinery Company name was running around from 1898 to 1911, and then again around 1933, and again in the 1950s, in a quick glance through google books.

Add in Clausing, and only overlap in 1933, and in the 70s & 80s.

Don't see a catalog for them in ITCL

The 1791, can't help you there.

Yea, any time they tip your bag over onto the floor for pricing you know it's going to be a rough one.

Picked up the last lot from my recent online auction binge. I paid $99 after all the fees and taxes were assessed. I really just wanted the Portapower set, and am hoping to flip the rest to make back my purchase price.

Unbranded Portapower system. Seems to have all of the parts, but the labels are worn off the hydraulic cylinder, so can't tell if it's a 4- or 10-ton setup.
20230419_162201.jpg

Included in the Portapower box was this Made-in-England Felco Mark II hydraulic jack. The company is still in business and specializes in "precision lift hydraulic jacks". This one is rated at 10 tons and 1.5 inches of lift. It was dry, but when I filled it with 80-weight oil, it pumped right up.
20230419_180208.jpg

20230419_180028.jpg

Wright Manufacturing 1-1/2-ton chain fall. The thing is massive, and I estimate from the 1930s. Dirty and beat up, and I still need to verify it works, but it should bring some decent coin if functional.
20230419_174608.jpg
20230419_174618.jpg

KR-300 Snap-on Rollabench tool cart. This was a surprise, as the chest was covered in grime and unrecognizable as Snappy from the auction pics. Given the logo, this might be pre-war, but I'm no Snap-on expert. I'll cross-post to the Snap-on thread for some help. This cart is missing its nifty work light and the side handle, the drawers are stiff and the paint is peeling in places, but I'm hoping someone wants it enough to buy it off of me.
20230419_160133.jpg

20230419_160257.jpg
20230419_160304.jpg

Finally, the contents of the tool chest: about a hundred pounds of drill bits, reamers, huge mills bits, Allen wrenches and taps. Some are unused, some are very worn. These will go on the market, too.20230419_162215.jpg

I think the 4 ton system has smaller fittings than the 10 ton. Will measure them later, add it here.

Friday's haul ($90):

TurboTorch regulator, handle, PL-8A self lighting tip; Turbotorch regulator, handle, A-8 tip; Water pump; timer; GripNail magnetic hammer; Best Maide no.52 grinder; Klein DK06 duct knife; Milwaukee 2401-20 screwgun; Craftsman =V= 1/2" flex head breaker bar; DHP Jack Plane; TurboTorch Mapp Gas

fri1.jpeg

Whoa just had a kooky moment. Notice the MAPP gas canister in the upper right. Well... I fired it up with a standard benzomatic tip and ran it for about 3 minutes; closed the valve; waited a bit and pulled the head off and shoooooosh its firing gas straight out the valve. I wait a split second to see if it will stop, it does not. I tap the head on a carving stump and it's now shooting out liquid! I graxp the nozel and screw it back on. Immediately open both doors of the garage and retreat into my house... : { It was kooky...

Unbranded Portapower system. Seems to have all of the parts, but the labels are worn off the hydraulic cylinder, so can't tell if it's a 4- or 10-ton setup.

Included in the Portapower box was this Made-in-England Felco Mark II hydraulic jack. The company is still in business and specializes in "precision lift hydraulic jacks". This one is rated at 10 tons and 1.5 inches of lift. It was dry, but when I filled it will 80-weight oil, it pumped right up.

Wright Manufacturing 1-1/2-ton chain fall. The thing is massive, and I estimate from the 1930s. Dirty and beat up, and I still need to verify it works, but it should bring some decent coin if functional.

Finally, the contents of the tool chest: about a hundred pounds of drill bits, reamers, huge mills bits, Allen wrenches and taps. Some are unused, some are very worn. These will go on the market, too.20230419_162215.jpg

I did cross post, and after getting a link to the CollectingSnap-on.com catalog archive and picture of a similar cart in MUCH better condition, I conclude that this is actually a 1st-gen K-300 Rollabench, in production from 1941 to 1948!

Thanks, ctuai! I don't know about wanting to keep the contents of the toolbox. At first, it was "Cool--look at all this tool steel!!". But when it came time to unload the drawers so I could get the cart in my car, it became "OMG, look at all this tool steel!"
