Yes and no. I fully understand it is sort of "the game", but I don't get out as much as I used to, and am choosier about what I get. As has been said, you (generic poster) shouldn't do it for others opinions, but it is gratifying when it works out that way.

Less of a pout, and more just general commiseration with Raineman, that we have all been there before. Debated about just sending my post to him via PM, but decided that others have probably been there as well, and sometimes it helps to show it can get to all of us.

Will still keep digging and posting, just for the fun of sharing. And let the "*****" fall where they may!

Excellent! And did you see that your post is at the top of a new page? Under normal circumstances, i.e. if I wasn't pointing it out, a boatload of folks wouldn't be concerned enough about what we are talking about to flip back and find out. On with the game!

Picked up a pickup bed of stuff but here’s the better stuff.
Regardless of price, which I generally ignore anyway, that's a terrific haul. The function marked wrenches and the IH Fire Extinguishers are especially cool, but my favorite piece is the milk scale plate. I'd make a nice shiny wall hanger out of that purely for the shape and marking.
Many times it's just timing.
I think it's just aesthetics. Definitely not anything to mope over. I just tell myself it's not reasonable to expect everyone else to have the same elevated and sophisticated sense of good taste in fine junque as I do, remind myself that I usually shake my head in silent, respectful derision at most guys going gaga for stuff I regularly leave behind, and move on to the next haul!

The big thing is, we all like different stuff for different reasons (which may change over time, of course).

I generally don't go bananas over Snap-On, because I think it's so overpriced that it just turns me off, even if cheap. Plus, 10 other guys are usually all over it. But occasionally, I'll jump on something S-O that looks cool or unique.

But, I also have weird tastes sometimes, so there's that...

I get it, it's a bummer when what you perceive as a good/great find gets overlooked/overshadowed. We've all had it happen, we've probably bumped someone else's good pick off the page. Sometimes not all can comment on a pick as we are not familiar with the item to realize the deal. Sometimes our picks are just bleh....I went a very long stretch where I barely picked anything...then I hit a pretty good cycle.....Now that the weather is finally breaking and ,supposed to be drier and warmer (finally) I'm hoping to be motivated to get some pickings listed/sold/cleaned up ,garage straightened up and pick some more. I'm torn between getting things listed and sold ,and heading out to pick more. I've got two stops planned for the ride home, a bi-annual Flea Market Sunday Morning, which should give me time to clean and list ,if not Sunday,I can always procrastinate until Monday evening. Also weighing a significant offer on the Bonney toolbox I got late last year, which would fund many, many more picks.

"Sophisticated Fine Junque" If I was musically inclined it would make a great garage rock band name.

A local neighborhood had a community sale today, mostly drive bys and was a bust. I did manage to get some new scratches on the car though from one who’s owner is apparently okay with their dogs jumping up on cars.

Next was a flea market the next town over. Picked up a couple Lesney Matchbox Super King trailers for the collection and a really nice Arai helmet for my Grandson. Been looking for one and as a result got his first motorcycle ride today (and 2nd).

IMG_4077.jpeg

Next 2 stops were TOO, a partial Indestro set (I have the rest in stock) and a Snap on long hose hook, and a set of luggage for an upcoming trip.

The milk scale is actually the real deal. There are hooks on the top and bottom. The little bit of masking tape says the scale is a little bit off. This would look super cool if it's polished up.

I still have more to clean out and then demolish the shed! I need to have a name for this find. After seeing a big rat running around jumping from the ceiling rafters on the first day I heard some noise in the ceiling the second day and started poking the boards up on the ceiling with a long handle shovel to convince him to go elsewhere! And a baby RACCOON fell down about 2 feet to another shelf and started hollering for his mama! He was to small to run off and was still there when I left. He was gone the next day so hopefully mama relocated him! So from now on this will be called the Bandit Shed!

Finally got a chance to restock my restoration bins today. $45 for the lot and got three things I actually needed too.
PXL_20230505_185814918.jpg
Taps and dies, cleaned up a friend's Greenfield wood box set last month but it was missing most of the stuff so this should fill in a bit more for him. Also 1-1/2 taps, course and fine thread.
PXL_20230505_193014958.jpg
Some wrenches and an old torque wrench.
PXL_20230505_193237026.jpg
Clamps, odd one out needs repaired(probably not viable).
PXL_20230505_193431603.jpg
Pry bar and Craftsman ball bearing motor Dremel. Needed a Dremel to play around with and $2 is a lot better than the $40 at Harbor Freight.
PXL_20230505_193554534.jpg
Calipers and micrometer, needed the modern calipers and mic but the old calipers are decent brands(few Starrett) so they might end up in with the rest of my box.
PXL_20230505_193947056.jpg
Graphing tools, don't have much use for them but it was $5 for the lot so they came to my office too.

A couple more boxes sorted out. The JC Penney box is rough but the vintage decals are awesome! It had a few motorcycle specific tools in there. The Craftsman box is really rough and the stuff in the bottom was real rusty. Some decent Williams flex sockets and a few other USA goodies.

Jacobs and JB have some really good Suckworthy stuff, But Holy cow BB, all that for the labor of hauling it off (which you would have done even if you bought it!), is F5 tornado suckage!

FYI that cooler, if not trashed inside is likely collectible to the right person.

for the Coleman lantern - what is the model No.? I think it may be a Kerosene burner. (not common)

Jacob - the "graphing Sets" are draftsman's compass sets, and the have the ink nibs, as well. They look to be mostly complete?

On Thursday, I hit a family run estate sale, picking up the following:
52873504684_bcfe8d9e92_c.jpg
on the left an almost complete set of Stalwille metric sockets in 3/8", misc. sockets (Cornwell, Hinsdale, Walden, etc.) Snap-on sockets, and Plomb sockets. Also, a Plomb T-handle, APEX #2 bit, Craftsman flextension, Cornwell combo, non-sparking hammer (someone ground off the mushrooming...), a perfect Plomb pebble #1, and a Goodell Pratt #3-1/2.

And this sale is why I don't like family run sales. Pricing was all over the place, with anything not priced the kid who was in charge of the shop section would ebay for prices, considered the Stalwille "antiques", and otherwise didn't know what he was doing. I don't mind that, it comes with the territory. But when I was given my slip with the price to go back into the house while the held my finds(?) some woman who was also involved in the sale starts repeatedly telling me that I got a good deal, and that was going change soon. What? Do you want more money? Do you know what I bought? What the heck! And, finally, when I go back to pick up my stuff, the kid is making fun of me for offering "too little". I was going to go back, as there was enough stuff there it would be worth my while, but not with that level of professionalism, or lack thereof.

Look, I get that this was grandpa's stuff. But if you are so worried about it and attached to it, then keep it. Otherwise, every single person coming through that door is going to try and get the best deal they can. Having some woman glower at me when I am paying the price you gave me doesn't help. Having an idiot child doing your pricing, while not even knowing what he is looking at, doesn't help.

/rant over.

But, I did stop by the thrift store after words, and found this, so my mood was settled:

Outlawms, the Coleman is a kerosene 249. It came flying off the shelves above the roof joists while I was pulling other stuff down. I'm glad it didn't have a globe, the 6 foot fall would have probably broke it. Found some other Coleman and camping gear, will post it later. Nothing as cool as the 249 though !

More stuff from the Bandit Shed. This Remline top chest had a mixture of hand tools and machine tools. Plomb, Proto, Williams, Starrett Lufkin and others. I did clean up one of the Remline handles a little to show the "Working Man". Some of the machinist tools may not be usable due to corrosion.

And more stuff from the Bandit Shed. The owner who passed away a few months ago used be be an automotive paint and body work suppler which is why there are 3M and PPG wall cabinets. The two red tool boxes are pretty rough but might still work for sorting out tools for the upcoming massive tool sale.

There is very little from the Bandit Shed I plan on keeping. One thing so far is this Speedglas model 9002X welding helmet. It needs a good cleaning and a new sweatband. When I got it would not turn on, thankfully a couple of new batteries got it working!

Stopped by fellow GJ member fatfillup’s shop today. Awesome collection of used tools, all for sale. Highly recommended a visit if you’re in the Finksburg MD area. Couldn’t meet a nicer tool junkie.

Anyway, I picked up the following at a fair price while supporting his local business (officially a pressure washer company).

Snappy drivers, Snappy wobble extension, MAC and Cornwell combos to fill some holes in the collection.

It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so we hit three sales today. The first was in Larkspur, in Marin County. The marked prices were high but turned out to be fine at checkout. I particularly liked the Bemis & Call adjustable and the Winchester screwdriver IMG_8590.jpeg
The second sale was in Berkeley. There was a lot of junk but we found a few things. The rusty mess kit was from 1944, a 3/8” drive Craftsman speeder and a tiny Snap-on screwdriver. The auger bits were Stiletto and long C Craftsman IMG_8598.jpeg
The third sale was in Hayward and was the estate sale of a Model T and A Ford collector. If I had been a collector of P&C tools it seemed like I could have found every one ever made. There was plenty of Proto LA but not one single Plomb item. The spray bombed GMTK box looked good but was rusted through on the bottom. The tray was in excellent shape though.IMG_8602.jpeg
Some P&C for UsernameIMG_8601.jpeg
S-K made tools. One big Wayne socket for Tommy IMG_8614.jpeg
Two SR socketsIMG_8605.jpeg
Rusty toolbox. I’ll put a pool of evaporust in the bottom.
IMG_8603.jpeg
Snap-on items. Odd size on the universal IMG_8615.jpeg

Wow, be careful of what you inhale in there. Don't want a rodent virus (such as Hanta)...

Can you post closeup pics of the markings on the Simplex jacks? Model numbers, when / where were they made?

Ballot stuffing is "frowned upon in this establishment" but WOW, what a haul...

Looks like both sets are missing a few pieces at least. Haven't looked into them yet since I started cleaning up the wrenches first but I did see they're both German.

Also apparently the pipe/rail wrench is SAE only, says so on the head so no metric fasteners, and the little rail wrench is USED, says it right on the shaft. I know they are referring to something else, at least the SAE, but I'll figure them out after they're processed. Kinda amusing though finally having an SAE adjustable wrench and a clearly marked used wrench that's probably 90+ years old.

What does the right hand end of the speeder look like? I’ve got just a handle running around, trying to figure out where it belongs. Little V in the center.

My new one looks just like that. I think the 1/2” drive ones look the same but they are a little larger. Here is the one I found yesterday after some slight restoration.

Looks like both sets are missing a few pieces at least.
I think the "loose" compass with the screw adjuster looks a lot like my Vemco from the set I bought new when I was still in HS for drafting class. I used that set constantly for many years! I still break them out on occasion.

Yep most of the sets ali See are German. fine quality I usually see that at stupid $$ prices adn they never sell for that. few "collectors", and enough surface reasonable that you don't need to pay though the nose.

I don't think I've used any in at least a decade. Did the whole digital thing when it became standard but nowadays I just rough out most stuff quick and rush actually making whatever it is I'm working on. Fortunately I'm not doing anything fancy anymore. Nobody else can figure out what I draw up but as long as I can figure it out it's fine, right?

Figured they weren't going to bring in much if they go to sale with the 2 pallets of tools and tool boxes I have waiting but if I make $10 I'm already doubling my money on them. Have seen similar listed for absurd prices too like you said but I don't trust eBay prices(or those on marketplace pulled from eBay) to match up with actual prices(locale, condition, buyers, interest, and such really affect an items worth and it's noticable at least in my area).

Actually seen a beat up crank grinding wheel, which I have two matching ones restored, listed for $100 last week with screenshots of the same model sold on eBay for $500. My lot is gonna get $20 each if they sell. Even if I transferred them over to a better locale, everything sells high an hour down the road, they'd only get $50 minus commission costs(30%).
