Wrapped up for today.. cannot continue due to medical problems, but will try to pickup where I left off, later. I am thinking about the gloss black. Sorta tradition, but I do not like how new paint on older vintage/stylized tools look sometimes… but! There is time for further pondering.

I picked up a Prentiss 83 an auction the other day. I've never seen one of these before and the only picture had it facing away so you couldn't see the c-channel slide, so it took some digging to ID it from the photo. This vise is not on the spreadsheet but luckily it's popped up several times in this thread. 5" jaws opening to 7". Advertised weight is 100lbs, mine weighs 88 1/2 lbs but is missing the swivel base.

My Dad is not feeling well, so working checking him periodically, as well as going slow for notes.

All I am concentrating on today is the inner crevasses of the static, lil more touch m-up on anvil, & horn.. should probably add food somewhere as well. Looking at the static body, as I go, i have come to the conclusion she can dip in SG a few more hours… but meanwhile, came up with an idea for an experiment …

I have some cheap tarnished brass brush rotary attachments I picked up at a flea market.. the old tarnishing on the bristles is why I never really ran them.
At some point I’ll use the underbody of this static, hit a few spots with each tool, dry, to see what I get, wrt the yellowing issue. These gold-ish/yellow/orange brass cheap heads from flea market fit any electric drill chuck, and some are even hex, as I have both new, and crappy brass available. I suspect they were at the flea market, because they did not pass QA, or something along those lines. I’ll let you know what results are yielded, once I get there… disclaimer: safety first, tool’s safety second, & the experiment is third.. but even I am curious.

Work inner body.
Check Pops, flip to underside and run brass rotary tool heads.
Check Pops.
Photo results… conclusion of any.

I really need to get GTFO of this place. No one at all talks to me for days/weeks, UNTIL I’m doing something. It is as if the interruptions are deliberate. There is zero synergy, living with simpletons, in this messed up state. I live with people who pay $350 for a Chinesium door knob that costs $35 at Lowe’s. no door, no bolt lock, no hinges need nor trim… just robbery for a knob.

Well…. Poop … Running the tools dry, gave equal results.. tbh, I surmised the left side would have some sort of the yellowing.
Left-half, flea market bit, can out shine silver.

Right half, Hd, or Lowe’s brass brush pack.
Also came out shining silver… both no yellowing… things to note; I never press, or lean into the tool, just stay even, and overlapping passes, much like painting.

Honestly shocking 🫢, as I have had the yellowing problem happen to me before.

I would advise anyone experiencing the yellowing issue, to change out for new shiny in box brass, before dismissing the technique as hokum.

Onwards…. I like brass brushes. If you think of the sand casted texture as a fingerprint, you preserve unique identifiers by being more gentle, thereby extending the life of the tool, with these techniques/methods of preservation. Not only do I want the 20-50-100 year old tools to be useful, now… I want them to be useful in another hundred years, as I have more much more faith/confidence in American, German, Japanese made tools of the past century, than most available, new-inbox, on shelves.

If you’re in this forum, you’re already a conservator of tools, therefore carrying the, honestly, quite young American industrial history, in some aspect, or another.

All that said… there is a time to pick up a hammer, and knock the **** out of stuff.

Thanks Woods for the spec:s. Almost missed your post. Been waiting for the 83. They are awesome vises, how about those lower jaws. The one I had were radial at the teeth. I'd love getting my hands on it, it would be a fun restoration.

Zeus, really going to town on that clamp-on. Use SS brushes in your dremel. Does a great job.

Does anybody have info on it? Price seems good if it's a legit quality vise (not "vice" - $50 asking in FB Marketplace), but the commute to get it is a little long.

I do not know it, but It looks identical to a Taskmaster… another Wilton copy. 50$ for 5 1/2” tho.

I have taped up and prepped for paint. I have learned to steady the hand enough to reverse roll aluminum tape sticky side out, to protect the interior of cylindrical machine surfaces.. I saw one dude go grab a drill, drill out the paint, then pin fell through… I was determined to find a way of avoiding that issue.

I don’t want paint on the hardened portion of the working surfaces, so taped them off, female threads, the slide of the dynamic, & internal surfaces oft the static.
All surfaces to be painted are brushed throughly with mineral spirits, wiped clean with a a dry work cloth, and left to dry thoroughly in the sun for a bit.

I have had great results/utilizing the Self-etching primer. The adhesion to cast iron has never been a problem for me, so I’m sticking to what I know works.

I recommend this product specifically, but also ask if anyone has tried painting vises utilizing the ‘Automotive Primer,’ also by rust-oleum? I have not, but was curious!

Learned my lesson long ago. But she was close when trying to pick her up to fit her on the stand… almost but I maneuvered my hands just in time!

Sanded all surfaces to be painted lightly with 220, then brush throughly, caution as to mind the tape work.

First coats and flip, the clamp base of the static is flippable, but I have to get her just right for ann even coating.

Here’s a pic of a 100 year old Stanley vise that I found. These were really well made back in the day and I’m always happy to find them. This one has the original brown japanning from the factory still intact after all this time. I’m going to do a light cleaning with WD-40to preserve the original finish. To think some people would soak the old paint off of these and rattle can them, such a shame.

I have learned to pull tape prior to letting the paint dry to crusting state.. anywhere from 1 to 5 hours after, but completely variable depending on brand of paint.. pulling while she is still tacky, helps get a more durably setup ‘lip’ of adhesion on your remover taped lines. (Last doodle)

yeah I totally agree. Leave them when they are a well cared for, natural patina… this Stanley am doing was not patina. It was rusted and neglected, and pretty sure she sat in rain water at some point.

I witness yellowing when using solid brass brushes (not easy to find these days). Especially on cast iron or rust pitted surfaces. Never seen it with brass plated steel brushes. Honestly, never understood why those exist. I guess to make you pay the brass price for a steel product.

These have been kicking around in a can for a few years. Looks like I need new ones. I wrote the prices on the handles when I bought them because I was kind of surprised at the prices I was finding on them.

The plastic-handled units below are from Harbor Freight, as I recall. Cheapies.

The full-size "real" scratch brushes are in a different place.

I do not remember whether the Dollar Store had brass. I know they had steel and the plastic-bristled ones like the one below. They were crazy cheap. I'll try to remember to look.

I go through a lot of these cleaning paint brushes.

Paint's on. Today I get to use up a whole bag of #1 steel wool. Fun! Fun! Fun!
