The circles on the square head usually make me think of Union brand The rule could be a replacement

Dunno if they ever made them in Germany. Look like a sloppy stamp,if it’s on the nut shaft.
I have one that looks like the Union squares but the rule is marked "No.602S" "Orange Tool Co, Orange, Mass. USA". There is an identical looking 602S in the Union catalog. Was Orange Tool Co a predecessor or part of Union Tool?
I didn't find any discussion of Union tools (just Union tool boxes, a different company I believe) in the Vintage Tool forum.

Union tool was located in Orange, so there may have been some swapping going on. @woody 73 notes the Union /MF swapping in his second or third post

So it finally happen to me. I found the baby bullet at the fleamarket. It wasn't at some high-end table, or with a bunch of snap on tools. It was on a tarp on the ground surrounded by cheap Chinese tools. This bad boy cost me $18. It only took me eight years of going to the fleamarket 1 to 3 times a weekend to Finally stumble across a cheap baby bullet!

Does anybody know if the paint is original? A lot of the ones I see on eBay the jaws and jaw-sides are not painted like this one. Also if anybody knows where can get an end cap and swivel locks please let me know.

From another vendor I also got lucky enough to get a snap-on three-quarter inch breaker bar Ratchet adapter for Three dollars so it was a pretty good weekend.
Shouldn't someone that is a vendor at a flea market know what the value of certain items are? If they are selling tools wouldn't they at least have anecdotal evidence of the market value of a baby Bullet? That's a you **** deal btw!

Sometimes yes, sometimes no - sometimes familiarity breeds contempt. I found one at a HS Flea 6 years back - I asked how much, poking it with my toe. she had to ask the guy who was across e row and several booths down. He finally came over and I asked again and he shruggs and said five bucks. I paid without ever picking It up. Just a guy selling "Junk" and probably inherited it :dunno:

@Michael_in_DE you ****!!!

Definitely beat my vise find today. Not sure if I even did well or not. I grabbed this very clean (just a bit greasy) Morgan 140 4" vise this morning. It had a $75 price on it. I threw a hail Mary and told the guy $50 and he accepted. It looks like the main bolt holding the swivel pad to the vise is missing. Anyone know what the bolt looks like that goes there? Any idea where /if there's a date code?

I also went to another sale and grabbed the two Fairmount 42H upholstery hammers, a Bell System tack hammer, and an unknown body hammer, as well as a Snap On 5/16" pinch which appears to never have been used. All told $20 for those.

The technical term for this is Asymmetry of Information. You have knowledge that they don't, in other words. But, that is how much of life, and certainly of economics, works. I have gone to a sale, checked out the books which are listed at a couple bucks a hardback, and walked away with a title that is worth $500 or so, mostly as I spent years in the used book world and know both what I am looking for and the condition that will make it so others want to pay my prices.

Still a USUCK deal even missing the bolt.

Shoulder Bolt - find a bolt that fits so you know the thread, get a button head bolt that size and a large washer that is bigger than the hole. Find or make a sleeve that fits the hole and bolt well, and make that a fraction longer than needed, and Bob's your uncle.

It rarely is the job of the buyer to educate the seller. I was at an estate sale where the Snap On wrenches were under glass in a display cabinet and the Plomb,Bonney,Vintage Craftsman were in bins for a quarter. Told the guy I can't afford Snap On but these mix-matched wrenches at 25 cents,I can afford. At another sale, preview pics showed a baby bullet,I made sure I was 1st in line. I bought a baby bullet and a bag of tools for $100 and had the Wilton listed on Ebay and sold within an hour or two at $450. If estate folks, flea market folks don't know what they are selling/pricing,it's better for me every time.

I’m almost certain you can buy the bolt you need from Morgan directly. They’re still in business. They have exploded views of their vises. Their customer service actually can tell you if the part will fit your era of vise. Good luck!

I pulled out five squares. Three are marked Union on the rule, one has a Stanley rule and one rule is unbranded. I have another Union rule that I will probably transfer onto the square with the Stanley rule. IMG_1384.jpegIMG_1385.jpegIMG_1386.jpegIMG_1387.jpegI think that switching rules is pretty common

There were no sales listed in our area but I saw a couple in the north bay and that is usually a scenic area. The first estate sale was in Petaluma. There wasn’t much that we wanted which was fortunate since the prices were at least double or triple what they should have been. I picked up the Heritage blowtorch, a possible crossbar and a rusty caliper. IMG_1356.jpegIMG_1357.jpeg
The second listed sale turned out to be a Petaluma thrift shop. Not much to be seen there but at least we weren’t shut out. Two Stanley screwdrivers, two Craftsman tools and a mystery wood handled screwdriver IMG_1358.jpeg
The last sale was in Novato and had quite an odd mix of items for sale. I couldn’t pass up the newspaper with headlines about the Loma Prieta earthquake which I still remember vividly. The Irwin screwdriver’s previous owner was Pacific Gas & Electric. A nice Vaco screw starter, a couple of Spintite nutdrivers and a dirty Xcelite came home. It cleaned up pretty well IMG_1360.jpeg

Went to a Garage Sale with a lot of nice stuff, so I will upgrade it to an Estate Sale :ROFLMAO:
I found a nice Porter Cable plunge base which I can use another of

AND a really cool pair of US Navy binoculars
Made by Bausch & Lomb, dated 1941
Wow....pretty darn clear optics!

I didn't chisel or lowball the seller, which he really appreciated
...I despise lowballing hyenas anyway, so you won't catch me being one

The owner asked me to come back tomorrow
...he will put a few cool things aside

We went to an estate sale of a Harley guy. I didn’t have any interest in the pile of Harley stuff but there were quite a few tools to pick through. The sale was put on by a guy I’ve dealt with for years who started his own estate sale company. He’s always been very fair and today was no exception. Here is the haul. IMG_1393.jpegBarcalo wrenches IMG_1398.jpeg
Xcelite toolsIMG_1394.jpeg
Stanley Yankee push drill with bitsIMG_1396.jpeg
Bridgeport 1/2” nutdriverIMG_1419.jpeg
After leaving Walnut Creek, we headed to a garage sale in San Lorenzo. More Craftsman =v= tools and a couple of interesting items. IMG_1388.jpeg
The Stanley Handyman egg beater had bits inside IMG_1404.jpeg
I liked the hand powered grinder although it’s going to need some maintenance doneIMG_1410.jpegIMG_1412.jpeg-Don

Not tool related, but a couple good thrift store finds to add to the collection. Two pieces of Anchor Hocking Royal Ruby depression glass. My mom has been collecting these for years and I’m always on the lookout for pieces too. Got these two for $1.50 total.

My wife spotted the grinder and it’s not too different in appearance to this one used during WW2.

Monthly sale today, didn't get much though
20231126_111912.jpg
Top is a 'thing' will Google later,
3 gedore no. 2 ring spanners not metric, but in as new condition so brought them home.
Socket on the left is blackhawk 3/8
Group of three are dowidat, was quite a bit of it there, but these two were only metric I could find so left the rest.
Double open on the left is Japanese made Toyota branded 10/12
Right is dowidat 12/13 which I regret picking as other side is in really poor shape, oh well, it still works!
Not much again this month, oh well

Temps dipped below 32*F for the first time last night, but still a pretty good turnout at my weekend flea. I haven't shared any Field Report like "context" photos for awhile. Taken from the top of a rise in the road, where I walked after picking for a better vantage point. It's hard to see that deep, but behind the building, after the parking lot, is where the majority of the vendors' tables are set up. The areas between the lot and the RR tracks on the right are where some of the reggler house cleanout guys set up. A few others in the back behind the building. The left is mainly for newer and dropped off the back of a truck stuff. But same idea, the rows of tables just keep going back, just hard to see that far. High season, there are no empty parking spaces or tables.

The yield today (Lugz 2023_40) was small, but interesting.

2023_40.jpg

The antique combination slip joints with wire cutter are "Cronk" of Cronk & Carrier. I would've left them behind but for the name. Old, old hand tool maker out of Elmira, NY

The wire stretcher is Bell or Western Electric. Too rusty to tell yet. I have another. Old. Pre-WWI for sure.

The 5-pc wrench clip is not branded, but I was happy to find it. I have a number of sets without one. I left the wrenches behind! :)

On Saturday, I had a list of interesting sales to hit in "the city." And as I was leaving early, scraping the frost off of my windshield, and letting the cab of my truck warm up, I checked my phone, and saw I had a message from my neighbor: "the interior light in [you wife's] car is one." And this was from the night before, so the light was on for a good 12 hours... Well. So, I go back inside, grab her keys, and try to start her car, to no avail. Dead battery (here is were I ***** about Subarus and the **** tiny sealed batteries that go in them). So, pull my truck around and jump it, no problem. But, alas, no luck as the battery was kaput. So, off to the parts house. And spend an unholy amount on a new battery. Grrr...

So, get the new battery home, install it, and now my morning lead time is gone. It is almost 10, I haven't had breakfast yet, and now will be primed for sitting in lines at sales, just after T-day. No thanks, not for me. So, I go eat, and revamp my list to one that started early and cut short the number of sales I do go to.
53357228278_fe45a030c5_b.jpg
That first stop was for a field repairman, I am guessing, AC or electrical. Nothing spectacular, but somethings for working around the house: Drill index (which in my irritation for the day I grabbed the wrong one, and it turns out it isn't full...), Allen hex key box full of misc., heavy duty Master lock, Klein curve strippers (my favorite), Klein 6-in-1, and a Crowntop pocket knife, which I knew had a chipped blade, but at the prices they were asking... $10 for everything.

53357019841_84479a9dfb_b.jpg
Second stop was a Restore that I have good luck at. S-P marked brace bit reamer, three D-I sockets and one 1/2" hex drive for 3/8"square head bolts (if that makes sense), Snap-on vacuum grip nippers (with chip), Plomb and Billings wrenches, Walden speeder socket wrench, and what is either the drive end of a 1/4" breaker bar or a 1/4" driver coupler. I will use it as the later. $2.50 for all of that.

53357223333_9fd9b00998_b.jpg
Third and final stop was an estate sale of sorts. One company, who I normally avoid as I don't like how they generally do business, will combine 3-4 sales together and hold them in an old clothing(?) store. They will put all the tools together in one room and as they have no idea how to price tools I will go as there is enough there about half the time to make it worthwhile. So we have two heavy duty C-clamps (seriously, the forcing screws are 1"+) and a twisted Bog extension. $5 all in.

So, it was a day, not great, and I made some screwups in my selections. But I got out of the house on a nice day!

Been busy, but some pickups say over the say last 1.5 months or so, been surprisingly fruitful given the time of year.

NOS Utica, Crescent & Channellock pliers

Bunch of Snap-On stuff, from what little they had, from a tool hoarder estate sale in my city/town. For whatever reason the sale was on a Wednesday and a Thursday and I didn't get there until lunchtime Weds but was able to hit early Thurs where they ended up with 50% off and wheeling and dealing due to the amount still left.

MAC Metric 3/8 impact set, MAC pliers, Blue Point SAE reversible ratcheting stubby wrench set, Kobalt (Williams) SAE wrenches..........first I've seen these in the wild around here, Craftsman USA metric reversible ratcheting wrench.
