Post more photos here or in the 'Knife' thread down on the VB, please.

Haha! Funny how you remember every cut and every broken bone like it was yesterday.

Here's one of my Red Devils, although the hawkbill has been sharpened out of it.
What is the VB? Must admit I didn't pay too much attention to the machete. I'll have to give it a second look.

BuffalO 18" Machete w/ sheath. Good working condition.

Vintage Board. Or maybe Visual Basic. But I'm guessing the first.
LOL I asked Bard (Google's AI) "What does VB stand for on a discussion forum" and it came back with Visual Basic. You sound an awful lot like a generative pre-trained transformer . Not that I have anything against non-carbon based contributors to Garage Journal.

Got to remember who you are asking there. Bunch of computer guys programmed it, the only discussion forums they know are computer forums, MMPRG, or D&D type forums. 😉

In my old world, it would have been VolleyBall. I personally refer to it as the other side of the house, and nobody gets that reference either. 🤷‍♂️

A knife manufacturer thats not in the index.
A search on "Southbridge Mass" turns up an active company and their website mentions tools.

That's just wrong. I hate that. It's like finding fake gold. Like the universe playing a prank on you.

Vintage Board. Sorry. I thought I have used it enough to be commonplace by now. My MO and that of many others here for many years has been to post initial photos of finds here, but more photos, and more close-ups, especially after clean-up, on the Vintage Discussion Forum.

Anyway, thanks. I can see it isn't vintage. I had never heard of a Buffalo brand. There are some very old machetes, pre-WWI into WWI, that had handles made of buffalo horn.

I can't read the name. But 'em are some serious hawkbills for sure. You could rob a ship with them. :)

bet r grip pliers looks like protos
For good reason.

The name sounds like a catchy marketing slogan from the 60's, but actually goes back a lot further.

BET'R GRIP was a brand name and trademark used by J.P. Danielson in the 20's through 1946, exclusively and explicitly for their unique adjustable crescent-type wrench, which had a square throat when the fixed and dynamic jaw closed, as opposed to the hex throat that Crescent (Mr. Danielson's former co-founded company), Diamond, and other followers had. It fit hex and square nuts, and allowed each to seat a little deeper. Hence, a better grip. J.P. Danielson made pliers, as well, excellent, high quality tools, but they never gave them the BET'R GRIP name.

The Plomb Tool Company purchased J.P. Danielson in October 1946, mainly for their production plant, to replace Utica, which they had just dropped as their supplier of adjustable wrenches and pliers. In the 50's, everything coming out of the former JPD plant was being stamped for all of Plomb's brands (e.g., Proto, Fleet, PENENS, etc). Same tools. Just stamped with different names.

At some point after 1957, someone at the company now named Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. decided to exploit the BET'R GRIP TM they had purchased from JPD, broadening the original meaning. You will see it on all kinds of pliers that PTII made, including Proto and other brands.

I've talked about this before - down on the VB! :)

What I imagine is Southbridge Cutlery
Southbridge Mass
I'm not going to drill down any farther then current Co. that comes up in the search.

Is it possible it’s Hyde Cutlery in Southbridge? There were six different Southbridge makers in DAT, 4 flavors of Harrington, Hyde, and Richard Stevens

Interesting, One of the Harringtons was Dexter Harrington & Sons( 1873-75) He had two patents which are not in DATAMP US138328 4/29/1873 US161958 4/13/1875

Possibly earlier was HARRINGTON CUTLERY CO., which used Dexter as a brand name.

I knew Dexter was a predecessor to Dexter Russell, but Dexter is not in DAT, nor is Southbridge Cutlery. Other ones to add to my DAT issues list (Not DATAMP ;) )

From DAT: Isaac Perkins Hyde, after working as superintendent at Theodore Harrington Knife factory (1872-74), along with Franklin Jacobs, formed this company which specialized in the making of mill knives used to cut the upper leathers of shoe Theodore also had patents not in DATAMP US148053 US148054 3/3/1874 US159548 2/9/1875

I like Dexter's site. As a website.
Whatever the final determination.

When did this become the history channel?
Long, long ago,...
The first time someone posted something vintage, and its provenance and its story as a product of manufacturing in the evolution of things men like to collect was just as interesting as the thing itself, which, in the grand tradition of the GJ Garage Sale thread, first occured on [checks notes....] March 31, 2012, 11:47pm, post #12, with an Excel Machine Tools Power Hack Saw by Covel, found by @Outlawmws, precipitating a running discussion on a Covel/Clausing/Atlas mergers and acquisitions dating back to 1948, links to manuals and more info on vintagemachinery.com, and the history of power hacksaw in general.

Or, from the very beginning of this thread, for short.

It usually fills the voids between picking, ogling others' hauls, and the next round of mystery stuff and subject matter deep dives.

I know! While I haven't been here since the beginning, I find it oddly fascinating to read about the histories you of the stuff you guys find!

everything.
I was wearing a red-and-white striped pair of coveralls on the propeller-driven airplane my mother and I flew in when she took me to Disneyland when I was four years old.

Really wish I'd been equipped with an "erase" button. ;)
In my Grandmother's case, the stroke was the "Control/Alt/Delete" command. The basic OS was still there, but no memory was intact. In the ensuing 17 years, no memory built up, so the links were apparently broken.

You are much better off with too many memories!

You could live in it, down by the river...

Seriously, nice van and cool project.

My boys (teens) LOVE that SNL skit!

And I agree, that's a VERY cool project. Wish I had the time and skills to do something like that!

Ringy-ding-dingy-dingy-ding-dong-ding!

Well done, 'Cuda! 👏

A tin cup, indeed, and a few other things I don't think I get the joke about! 🤪

Seriously. The tin cup is obvious. I suppose the glasses are supposed to enhance the begging with feigned blindness (I have some Ray-Bans that would work better!) But WTF is the pencil for? And is that a little noose to end it all or what? :headscrat

I'm sending this to my "little" brother as a gag gift. Can't believe it's still sealed (hard to see, but it's still shrink-wrapped in plastic), although I am not sure how vintage it is. We are both eligible, both pseudo-retired, both bemoaning we can't really retire yet.

I believe the string is for selling the pencil over and over. Tie it to your finger and pull it back and then resell. Gag gift.

One sale today and it was pretty brutal. I got there at 8:30 for a 10 am start and was lucky enough to get #8 in line. I went and had a delicious breakfast and then waited 'til 10 minutes before the start to line up. House entrance was at the back, garage detached and the sale attendant was doing everything he could to keep order and prevent a bum rush to the garage. We finally got in and #25 is screaming "i'll take this.I'll take that,I'm buying this" Attendant reminded him that #1-10 were first in line, the only folks who were shopping at the moment,he would have to wait. 25 slams the lid on a box and storms off. The rest of us begin shopping. I had to choose between the Waterloo and a Vintage Craftsman as I only have room for 1. I chose the Waterloo as it had keys, ball bearing drawers, and its should sell quicker. If I had a van or a truck I'd have bought both. The other item of interest was a 50's Schwinn Black Phantom bike. I have a co-worker who buys/sells/collects vintage bikes but this one was a couple hundred past his range to flip/profit. Anyhow I managed to get out of there with a few items and no punches thrown, elbows to the ribs,or further harsh words.

Wow, nice stuff!

Stories like yours remind me that I hate people. Well, strangers who act like that, anyway...

Speaking of which...., where is our resident nomad, @AK4570? Not as active this year. Hope all ok.
Alive and well, my friends! The small matter of completing a dissertation whilst working full time has somewhat slowed the scrounging this year...

Although there have been a few recent noteworthy acquisitions that I'll get to reporting shortly.

Happy holidays, All!

Best regards,
John
