The old year is almost over and the New Year is almost here (not sure I can stay up ‘til midnight, maybe central time) but here is my best shot. And away we go.

Four Score and Seven Years Ago.. (Wait, wrong thing to plagiarize. Let’s try some different previous year’s host intro’s instead (thanks to smokeshow69, Old Radar, and Private Lugnutz for some great quotes here)

First off, a quick thank you to Smokeshow 69 for his fantastic hosting job this year. And to all of those who suggested me for host, thanks for the vote of confidence, will do my best to fill the shoes of the previous years.

This is the 13th year the Garage Journal has featured the Garage Sale Thread and we’ve set up, refined, and lived by a particular set of rules. If you’re new to the thread, take a moment to read the rules and if you’re an old contributor, take a moment to read the rules again—I know some of you are getting old, like me, and forget stuff some time.

RULES OF THE THREAD

1. The most important rule is: “The code is more what you'd call 'guidelines' than actual rules.” – Barbossa, Pirates of the Caribbean

2. Without photos – it never happened. **but for heaven’s sake, please don’t lay your newest find down on your lap and take a photo. There are much better places to document your find than across your crotch** Even holding it up against your windshield, dashboard and console as the backdrop is really distracting, so the volume of suckage you have just scored may seem diminished. See more below. You don’t need a photo hosting service. Simply use the attach feature, this button.
1704090248443.png

3. Give us the whole story, the back story, and maybe even a side story. Posting photos alone is as worthless as describing a great score alone, without photos. If you don’t have the time to do both as soon as you get home, we can wait. Compose your story when you have time to devote to it and once your editor has corrected your formatting, grammatical errors and spelling—and you’ve arranged and properly oriented your photos, in good light, with usable detailed photos of stuff you may need research help with (hehe)— then post it. Some folks like to tell a story, others just post a list, whatever works for your life’s story. If you have some odd thagomizer that none of us are gonna figure out, or understand, feel free to embellish, or start a guessing game as to its purpose. (If you have no clue as to what you have, some of us love researching weird things.) At that point, you can sit back and let the cheers, envious comments and claims of your superior suckage wash over you.

4. No Acquisitions From Any “New” Retail Source. Keeping in mind the thread title and the overarching theme of the Garage Journal itself, we have given wide leeway on types of items and sources of acquisition as long as you can provide an interesting story. Garage Sale, Estate Sale, some Auctions, Restore, and Goodwill etc. are all fair game, gifts from family, friends, and even complete strangers are definitely in scope. If you purchased it brand new from a store, we don’t want to see it.

5. Suckage and the price you pay. It’s nobody’s business what you pay for your acquisitions so it’s purely your choice to include or withhold that tidbit—but it does add another facet to the overall interest in your find. It also increases the odds of you scoring the coveted “You ****” comment from your fellow pickers. Awards of You ****—and all its derivative forms—will be more or less tracked by me to determine the ten (10) most suckworthy posters who you will then vote on for the 2024 Picker of the Year (PotY) Award. I won’t simply be counting the word “****”, but looking for other terms of admiration for the finds. It goes without saying—you cannot **** yourself and it is still illegal in most states to solicit suckage, so don’t do it here.

6. Special interests. As a woodworker, my interest and understanding, and scoring of amounts of suckage may be a bit skewed from those who love vintage mechanic’s tools. Stories of a $5 #1 plane, or selling a #9 plane for enough $$ to buy a used station wagon are in my memory banks from decades ago, so feel to toss in stories like selling a little glass ball for $3600, so we know just how crazy things were on that score. The quality or rarity of a find may be a bigger deal than the difference between its actual value and what you got it for.

I would like to thank all the prior Host Emeriti for providing a site for teamwork, camaraderie and an outlet for participants in this interesting hobby that slows the loss of old tools and other items of historical interest. Thanks specifically to Smokeshow69 as the great Host of last year’s thread—I had a fantastic time as a thread contributor, I will do my best to live up to the standard set by you and the other Hosts of the first decade.

Well said RTM! Congrats, good luck, and hope you have have fun as host. Also a big thanks to Smokeshow69 for another fine GS year now in the rear view.

Happy New Year all from the east coast, on the southwest side of Florida! This is the first year I ever slept through the ball drop. Chinese takeout knocked me out after a day of household duties, but the 1:30 am fireworks just woke me up.

Happy 2024 to All My Fellow (and Sister) Pickers!

My 3-Year streak for "First Find of the Year" accolades came to an end last year when they gated the dang flea market! I was lucky that 2020, 2021, and 2022 were open days. I am not a ReStore guy. I am looking forward to seeing who it will be!

Well, well, well. What do we have here?

Seems somebody thinks they are running the joint...

Congratulations RTM! This should be a fun year, and, being the magnanimous gentleman that I am, I am going to give everyone a head start on the finds this year, and wait about before going in and snatching everything. (In other words, it is New Years Day, and UPS doesn't deliver auction wins until tomorrow...)

@RTM
That was a great launch and maybe more reinvigorating for me than you can know.
...but looking for other terms of admiration for the finds.
Thanks for encouraging this.
As a woodworker, my interest and understanding, and scoring of amounts of suckage may be a bit skewed from those who love vintage mechanic’s tools.
Which is perfectly fine. It's your privilege as host and something that has always given the thread a fun, different personality every year.
The quality or rarity of a find may be a bigger deal than the difference between its actual value and what you got it for.
Well said! I will add that the quality and rarity may also be a bigger deal than the quantity!

I am hoping we get some of the oldtimers back. Duddly, for example. He always found the coolest stuff. My mind is frazzled or I'd rattle off other names.

Happy hunting, everyone.

I haven’t seen a midnight on New Years in several years. The Mrs. didn’t even make 7pm, lol. My grandson and I fell asleep watching football.

So, this morning by 6am EST, I’ve already made 4 offers on the interwebz for additions to the collection. I don’t expect I’ll be the first to kick off with new content, but I’m not laying down for it.

Thanks for the start RTM.

Retrieving a large dog crate from my parents’ garage, to return it to my sister-in-law…maybe I could induce my dad to sell me something…Nah!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thanks to RTM for a great launch!
Best Luck to all contributers, subscribers, watchers, lurkers, and drive-bys!

To discourage a certain form of exhibitionism that was rampant in other places (like eBay) a few years back. There was a stovetop tea kettle, where if you looked closely, you saw things you couldn’t un see.

Happy New Year guys.
I’m about as old as many of the regulars on this thread (75) but I was drinking champagne and watching the San Francisco fireworks (on TV 😎) when the clock struck twelve. We were not in the mood to clean up afterwards. Here is a view of the floor this morning,

I’m in for sure! And thanks to RTM for carrying on my pet peeve about the crotch photos! I really dislike it when folks are lazy and do that. The close second is when someone takes a picture of a wrench holding the wrench and thereby massively decreasing the amount of wrench seen in a photo because it’s covered by their hands. Take a moment to set it down on a flat surface for crying out loud and take a good picture. Good pictures equal more comments/ ***** ! ( steps off his soap box and joins the crowd of commoners while repeating in his head, I’m not the thread host anymore).

@SKToolfanatic

Yesterday on the 2023 GS thread, SKTtoolfanatic asked about the top 10 suckees(members with the most *****) for 2023...Welp the thread was closed last night so I wasn't able to post those number in that thread so here goes.(editors note- I actually posted 13 total due to the Two 3 way ties shown below)

Bmwrd0-45
3Bay-42
Ctuai-35
Raineman-31
DaveFR-30
bluebolt-29
Squez-25
3Jakes-25
Alinc100-25
NJMarty-20
OldRadar-20
Blue Bomber-20

Again, the above goes to show how close the race can be. That's why it's important to both post your finds but also tell others if you like their finds!

If we're making early year pleas, I hate dislike am discouraged by the explosion of GIGANTIC photos. I know it's an artifact of using a phone, where they don't appear overly large. But if you're reading GJ on a desktop, like I do, one GIGANTIC photo often takes up the entire screen.
this brings up a good question: I can not determine how to make my linked photos appear smaller. I can paste the link, shrink it down to a fixed number of pixels wide, and it still comes back gigantic on initial post. I have to post, then go back and edit the size down, then it stays small.

Anybody know the solution?

Sorry, I don't know anything about linked photos.

I upload all my photos from my phone to my laptop, where I store them, and where I edit them for size before posting on GJ. I usually reduce my landscape-oriented photos to 700 x 525, maybe 800 or 900 x something at the most. For portrait, I usually use 450 x 625.

@RTM , great way to kick off the thread, thanks! And congratulations on your election as 2024 Host.

Yesterday (31 DEC 23) was a nice day, with the unusual lack of need to rush home. Thus, I made a trip to the flea for the first time in a couple months. It was nice because it alleviate the twitching I'd been feeling from withdrawals! Good to get my hands a little rusty and dusty again. @Lugz, I've posted all these as thumbnails; rotated them on the phone, so unsure why several are out of orientation. Catching up on my GJ is much more interesting than the Rose Parade.

First some catch-up pictures.
Old (possibly WW2) GI toolbox I picked up in October. Missing the tray, but it has all the "tells" of a WW2 box; thanks to Don who helped me confirm what I'd found, when I found it. I've been meaning to clean it up & post it, but here it is:

IMG_2676[1].JPGIMG_2677[1].JPGIMG_2679[1].JPG

A miscellaneous assortment of tools I found in my backpack, when I took out yesterday's loot. Best is a TL-13A linesman's pliers, though not marked as such:
IMG_E2696[1].JPG

Yesterday's pickings:
9" (Italy) Boker scissors
7" Universal scissors, made by LF&C
6" punch which is beaten down to 5-1/2" (not branded, or Mayhew but beaten below the branding)
8" CeeTee pliers, with a later (?) Crescent USA stamp
Multitool for an M2 MG, probably made LONG after WW2

IMG_2683[1].JPG
Ammo assortment, most interesting of which is a 1944 FA .45ACP incendiary cartridge, and a pair of brass hull 12 ga 00 buck:

I guess I'm guilty of the big pics.

I only use GJ on my phone and didn't realize the pics were huge. If there's a reasonable way to size the pics I'd be glad to.

I am hoping we get some of the oldtimers back. Duddly, for example.

Well, I made it to the first page--but it was close. I don't know what's going on with the search feature today, but no matter what I tried--and I tried everything--this thread did not show up in the results. I finally had to PM Lugz who sent me a link.
I then copied @RTM's thread title, pasted it in the search box and again the thread did not come up. With the limited posts this morning, I'm a little concerned I may not be the only one who thought @RTM blew the opener!

Anyway, glad that didn't happen, glad to be here and will be gladder still when the first decent sale appears here in S.A.
Good luck this year everyone and especially RTM!

I never use thumbnail, so I wouldn't know. But don't change things you like to do on my account. I will just keep scrolling.

I haven't really noticed who, and I may be in a very small minority, so please just carry on. I don't want to be responsible for people having to figure out something they're not used to. I'll just keep scrolling.

I'm going to go back and edit.

Do you see it on page 1 of the General Tool Discussion forum? Reason I ask is, there are a handful of threads that do not show up in the forum for me. Some kind of weird glitch.

Yes, I do. I did think to look there earlier this morning but mistakenly hit General Garage Discussion instead...

I’ll start it off, Outlaw, you ****, $10 for a pair of SK rats alone rates that, the rest is icing.

Obviously, insulators are on the high attention level now.
