Justin, I didn't take my camera with me on the Sunday walks. I didn't want to be the perv walking along the beach taking pictures of the women going *******. That meant I never got a picture of the beach from the staircase at the south end beyond the Manly Surf Pavilion.
And nearly three years later, I finally found myself in Manly on a sunny morning. I’m sorry for the delay, Bob – I hope these are the beach views you were hoping for.

At my old house, there was a three shelf rack thing that brought the spices down from the top shelf. it was pretty handy for short folks.

Just like this one,
Three shelf spice rack

Now, my spice cabinet is so full but I'm usually the only one that uses 90% of the spices. My wife seems to be happy with 4 spices; salt, black pepper, garlic, and chicken Boullion.

My spices lay flat, piled into a drawer next to the stove.
Man logic.
I use Cajun, Jerk, curry, garlic, ginger, mixed herbs. And some salt and pepper.
The rest of the space is taken up by unused bottles. No idea what they are.
Rian, that seems more than adequate. In our first house I hung a spice rack on the wall next to the stove. I think it held 10 bottles of spices. My mother set it on fire somehow when she was visiting.

I have those spices as well. We have stainless jugs of salt and pepper for the table as well as a crystal set for special occasions. The little bit of kosher salt I use for cooking is kept in the white salt cellar next to the stove. This Christmas I was gifted a container of Portuguese Flor de Sal -- because my children think my blood pressure is too low.

I did manage to get the second spice rack installed today. I'm going to try to keep the spices down to 45 or so. Of course basil, bay leaves, cilantro, parsley and thyme are herbs not spices so they don't count.

Dustin, all I can say is 'be still my foolish heart' because I do miss that view and all the other ones down under. I'm so glad I took a few pictures over those two years.

Cody, that's a great solution. Only drawback is the space it takes up when folded away. As noted, our spice cabinets are full of things we like to try while our better halves are perfectly fine with a couple of spices. Liane's are salt, pepper, oregano and garlic.

Why do middle-aged women
Have so many knick-knacks?
Where do middle-aged women
Get all them spice racks?
They got baskets on the wall
Don’t do nothin’ at all

I'm more curious as to his sharpening setup. I've received comments a few times with how sharp my knives are (just barely to paper slicing is sharp enough for the cheap stuff that will dull soon anyway)

@Squankum, Liane prefers tchotchkes rather than knick-knacks.

She responded angrily when the "counter revolution" arrived. Therefore we've never had a toaster, toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker or electric can opener on the kitchen counter or hanging from the overhead cabinets. I responded with built-in microwaves and moving the can opener, coffee bar and countertop microwave to the garage, a door away from the kitchen. While she's alive there will never be a KitchenAid stand mixer in the house.

I really put my foot down regarding the baskets. There are cabinets and shelves around the perimeter of the garage. The backup basket collection (not the in-use collection) is not allowed to exceed that space. Seems my foot didn't stomp hard enough because baskets have found their way to ever more spaces. The larger baskets have more baskets nested inside.

Bob,
Do you and or Lianne have a knife problem? :ROFLMAO:
Jon, the knife problem is mine, all mine. Early in our marriage we had a few carbon steel knives that 'would cut' but Liane got suckered into being a Cutco representative. She sold five knives, one to her mother and four to mine all of which we inherited. She used her commission to get one for herself. When we moved to Australia we had to buy knives, including a large Chinese cleaver ($9A as I recall). Those half dozen knives came home with us.

As I said, I retired at 50 in 1994 and during the adjustment period I watched some daytime TV. There was a Ronco commercial that ran all day, every day and I fell for the sales pitch (these knives can cut up your aluminum cans and even mess up your hammers). That's why that giant block of SIX STAR + CUTLERY sits in the corner. I do use a few of them but it's really there to remind me what happens when you stop surfing and land on the QVC channel. The rest of the knives are recent Amazon purchases of better quality knives.

[Beware: those Ronco knives are still available: https://www.amazon.com/Ronco-Sharpe...Stainless/dp/B0CKY1HVK7/?tag=atomicindus08-20]
Here's the sales pitch:

@Wreckster23, I use the Ruixin sharpening system:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P4LN1XX/?tag=atomicindus08-20
I prefer the diamond stones over the corundum so I added some finer grit ones to the collection:

Just want to briefly plug the Buck Knives company's kitchen offerings. Made in America and fairly priced compared to some eurofoofoo stuff. The usual Buck stainless steel blades, not hard to sharpen but stay sharp a long time.

Way back in the day, when I was working at an HD dealer, we sold Buck knives. They were great so I bought a couple of their kitchen knives. I was totally unimpressed by the kitchen product. Go figure... :dunno:

Kay, the longer I'm on these hormones, the more I understand. Every once in a while Liane complains about my mess in the garage and suggests spending the day with me to straighten it all out. I have visions of tools organized as tchotchkes like wrenches holding up screwdriver teepees. I may have mentioned that Liane is a witch so doing as I will to her stuff could cost me another limb.

@Squankum, the Buck knives might be great but I'm in the $79 set world, not the $799 one. I can stomach mistakenly paying the occasional $100 on a knife or three but $800 all at once for a potential mistake way outside my comfort zone. I've purchased Belgique Professional, Henkel and Mondial knives over the years when they've been on clearance or showed up in a thrift store. My latest acquisitions include two Regalia Emperor Series knives that have AUS-10V Japanese super steel cores and 66-layers of Damascus steel cladding. They have impressed me more than any other knives in the collection.

I've had this knife thing since I was a little kid. Carbon steel bone handled mini hunting knives and jackknives to start and more recently potentially illegal switchblades. In 1958 my father returned from a Middle East sabattical with a Nazareth brass dagger and sheath. It's displayed in my office with other weapons.
Nazareth Dagger Civil War Pistol.jpg

Someone posted the dagger alone for a tidy sum so maybe I should offer it up with the brass sheath for twice as much:
Kay, I am so stealing that wisdom of yours. Priceless!!

Dan, I would share that wisdom with friends. Share it with your significant other and you might want to sleep with one eye open and have someone else taste your food.
I thought I saw a can opener in a garage pic! I was just imagining you spending long days in the shop, making lunch with microwave and can opener and...
@Squankum, that would be a fairly accurate description. Almost all our canned goods are stored in the garage so having the can opener out on the clean section of the Formica workbench makes sense. I also store my microwave popcorn in the garage and the garage microwave does a better job than the big built-in over the stove. The microwave is also handy for re-heating my coffee.
Way back in the day, when I was working at an HD dealer, we sold Buck knives. They were great so I bought a couple of their kitchen knives. I was totally unimpressed by the kitchen product. Go figure... :dunno:
Roger, I have a couple of buck folding knives and really like them but I would prefer to buy one kitchen knife to test. With the completely full knife blocks in the kitchen, bringing in another would not go over well.

Oh Bob, that wisdom will definitely be shared with a friend who's wife has taken over his environment.

I would never mention something like that to my lovely wife. My momma didn't raise no fool.

Kay. early in we had so little the space had to be communal. Now I have all the space I've ever wanted so I've made some adjustments. Those baskets could be moved from the garage to the attic but then I'd have to guess which basket Liane wants. It's easier for her to just point and I retrieve it.
Glad to see you haven't been sitting on your coit doing nothing. i do like your loft ladder. Especially like the spice racks.
Hi Terrick! I'm trying to get back in a groove where I tackle something every day. The loft ladder required some help from the family but that made it more fun. I'm already appreciating the spice racks. Somehow the spice I wanted was never in the front row but now it doesn't matter. Next upgrade is to label the ends of the racks.

It was a cool and breezy day so I felt like doing a few things. We have several gardens that have pea gravel mulch. The pea gravel slowly sinks into the dirt, requiring re-dressing the gravel.
Gravel Mulch Gardens.jpg
Rather than throw more gravel on top, I prefer to dig up the top layer and sift the soil out of the gravel. I made a rectangular 1/4" hardware screen frame that fits our Gorilla Cart. I'm often digging holes to plant evergreen ground cover and don't need to drag out the cart and frame. I've been using a leftover piece of that hardware screen bent over a 5-gallon bucket. Today I cut the center out of one of those 5-gallon buckets and screwed down the hardware screen (and bent the pointy bits over). Now I have a choice of screens.
Gravel Sifters.jpg
I also have a choice of buckets. Liane believes we need to keep every empty chlorine tablet bucket we create so I have a choice of buckets as well.
5 Gallon Buckets.jpg
I decided today was the day I move the Corvette out in the driveway and do some welding. Several months ago I cut up some exhaust pipe couplers and some scrap strapping to make additional racks to hold detailing products. Once the car is out of the bay it only takes a couple of minutes to set up the welder.
Bottle Holder 10.jpg
A few more minutes sitting down and I have ten pint bottle holders tacked up.
Bottle Holder 11.jpg
Some grinding and drilling and the first rack is ready to mount. I'm mounting the racks with three small flathead screws.
Bottle Holder 11a.jpg
I picked up a three-pack of markers with extra long tips that work great to mark the holes at the top rear edge of the exhaust pipes.
Bottle Holder 12.jpg
I was going to finish hanging the second rack but it was time to start dinner. We're on the early bird schedule when it comes to dinner but brunch rat schedule when it comes to mornings. Most mornings brunch is coffee and humid air. I closed the cabinet and returned the Corvette to its resting place. I may have a detailing product problem. I'm doing my best not to exceed one cabinet full..

Bob you are one busy fellow. Your spice/herb storage set up is great. It is kind of a coincidence my wife just bought some baskets to put some sense of order in her cabinets. I’m kind of glad I seen this after her work was done. If I would have shown her your arrangement I would have had a new task for the honey do list.
Our yard is kind of a one of a kind in our neighbourhood. We don’t have a blade of grass unless it is an ornamental type. We are all paving stone, shrubs, flowers, ponds, raised beds and landscape rock. Oh and this time of year snow but that is slowly abating. Kind of dread when the landscape rock gets kind of filled with spruce needles and other debris. There is a heavy landscape fabric beneath to hold off any weeds. I won’t be adding any rock either but will have a few yards of material to separate.
Hope you get your medical difficulties under control soon and enjoy our newly minted spring. I know I’m looking forward to the rejuvenation of the coming season

I claim no credit for this spice storage! House was built before I was born. But it is awesome.

I deny involvement in the two shades of white paint "touch up" situation. Happened soon after we moved in. I was assured it was white paint and it would be "fine." With great mirth I must point out that this person was Ms. Squankum and that when it comes to automotive stuff, I don't have much of an eye for body or paint and I last waxed something in the mid-90's, because I'm so far behind on the mechanical bits. When it comes to the many colors and shades and NAMES that, say, the fairer *** is known for, I'm not at all able to keep up. But I do know there are different shades of white. I've heard that around.

@Bob Heine - We have river rock in a few areas and larger rocks in a couple of others. Long ago, we put down heavy-duty landscape fabric (not the Home Depot stuff - got it from a landscape supply). That has helped ENORMOUSLY with the dirt swallowing up the rocks.
Roger, I have done the landscape fabric in the past. It was the stuff from the big box store and it worked well but it was a new garden with nothing planted. As soon as I started cutting holes and planting things it created a new issue. Florida weeds started growing ON and through the fabric and were almost impossible to pull out. Solved one problem and created another. Thankfully we have a new lawn service and they pull or spray all the weeds, trim the hedges and real soon they will be re-sodding the weed patch in the front yard.
Bravo. Organizational density for the win!
Mark, I'm working hard to fit 30 lbs of $hit in my 15 pound [3-car] garage. I used to have 20 lbs in my 10 pound [2-car] garage and before that 10 lbs in my 5 pound [1-car] garage. My $hit expands to fill whatever space I have.
That reminds me, Bob! Griot's Garage sent this to me in the mail a few weeks ago, thought I'd pass it along:
Dear enabler (aka @Squankum), I'm going to resist visiting Griot's Garage. I've already fallen for Jay Leno's trap. I am on the verge of ordering his metal polish after seeing one of your video links to his rehab site for GJ addicts.

Emil, file the spice/herb storage for your 'get out of jail' thing. Like when you really really need some expensive solution to a garage or Pontiac problem. It's probably not enough to cover a '57 fuelie Bonneville but maybe enough for a lift.

When we first moved to Florida we noticed quite a few homes with your kind of landscaping. The real estate agent suggested they were second homes for Canadians who didn't want to pay for water and lawn maintenance services in the hot half [3/4?] of the year.

I'm hanging in for a few more weeks. Mid-April for the sinuses and probably June for the jaw. In the meantime I will try to distract myself with busy work.
Bob, You'll be pleased to know that you don't have much more in the way of detailing supplies than I do. Yours are just much better organized. They do seem to multiply by themselves.

Lou Manglass
Lou, that's wonderful news. I was afraid I would be the only one attending a Detailers Anonymous meeting. I think the organizing is an excuse to buy more -- when an empty bottle emerges. I also know the problem is less obvious when the bottles are scattered all over the place.

Not much you can do about stuff growing on top of the fabric.

1 (or 2) layers of this stuff should pretty much stop the "growing through" problem. Night and day difference from what we had previously used from the big box stores. I see Amazon has it available too.

Australian man discovers Jay Leno's metal polish, is very happy, demonstrates its use:

I'm not sure if it's sold at Wal-Mart, I think it is. All of his other products are, last I checked, and I felt bad that I couldn't support Jay (net worth $600M+) but everything else, I already have in some other brand.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Not much polishing in my world.

This internet joke:

1710944193245.png

Led to Mr. XKCD doing a poll to see what was really going on out there:

@Squankum, I do like stud bay cabinets. I also like shallow garage cabinets. I filled one side of the garage with nine 30"x30" cabinets using 1"x8"s for the carcasses and Home Depot Mills Pride 15"x30" door packs. I think they were $6 a pair back in 1997. Also built two 30"x 42" cabinets with 1"x10" carcasses to store shop manuals, catalogs and items too large for the 1"x8" cabinets. Another wall is standard 30"x30"x12" upper and 30"x30"x24" base cabinets. You can bury a lot of stuff in a 12" deep cabinet.

I was into two Sears premium paint colors besides Ceiling White. One is an Almond (I forget the name) and the other is a light Almond.

Yee of little faith! Of course I have a jar of Quick Glo. Not sure which enabler gave me the link but I'm certain it was here on the GJ. I wonder if it's more valuable now that the brand is tied to murder suicide. It's in the above photo but here's a closeup.

Whoa, don't go pulling that trigger. I ordered a bottle direct from Jay's website and it was $24.98 ($19.99 + $4.99 shipping). I'd rather give a struggling small businessman worth $600 million my money rather than the current Richest Man in the World. Honestly it was the lower price -- if Jay charged a nickel more than Amazon -- I would order it from Amazon.

At least it was birthday money that caused ‘em to fall into my cart…🤣
Mark, the enabler in me has a kind of spidey sense when a fellow GJer has a gift card or credit burning a hole in their pocket. This particular tool is in my toolbox, like so many others, because of this site. There's a real good chance my tools will be given away because most of my family has no idea what they are or what makes them so valuable and indispensable.

Jay's just a regular guy! Sure, he has a McLaren worth maybe $17-21M, but he bought it used for under $1M, back in the day.

And he doesn't have his own space program.

I'm doing my best to minimize my car detailing supply, but I know a couple of Adam's cleaning products has made it in my garage. the Bug remover and Iron remover spray with gallon jug has made it in my collection recently. So far most of my cleaning product can sit on a mobile 3 wire shelf cart. Minus the rags as I keep them in a cabinet to keep clean.

@Squankum, I watched the Tonight Show with Steve Allen, Jack Parr and Johnny Carson. When Late Night with David Letterman ran after Johnny, I started watching him. I expected David to take over when Johnny retired. When Letterman started The Late Show, that's what I watched so it's only right I pay Jay back now.
I'm trying to remember if I had that connector style on the subaru or Ford??? For $40 on amazon I'd like to make sure I have a need! LOL
Cody, Amazon's price is too high for me as well. I ordered mine from Tool Discounters (https://www.tooldiscounter.com/product/lisle-electrical-disconnect-pliers-lis37960). It was $20.75 + $8 shipping but I see it has gone up to $24.99.
I was completely clueless in my youth and used dishwashing liquid on the cars. My go-to detailing product was Blue Coral. Used chamois and terry cloth towels to wipe the cars down and thought I was doing a great job. I put sintered iron shoes in the drum brakes on the Pontiac GTO so I suspect the car had a light coat of iron poder deposited on it. No clue about iron remover back then (if it was even available).

I watched this video last night and their use for modern EFI injector connectors and coils got my attention. These are way too popular right now and they're going on my "someday" list, when prices come down.
