I was elated to find these "Excelsior" brand dividers at the flea this morning.



This catalog excerpt is from 1902.






The patent date (AUG 7, 1900) refers to 655,185.



DATAMP has a nice page here. I have to admit I have paged through the 1902 catalog several times in identifying pliers and punches and preparing my collection display board placards and never noticed any dividers. They were used for shoe repair. In 1938 they were branded LODI and not as elaborate as these, but still quite nice. @Mintgrun has an example of those posted here. As far as I can tell they're the only examples on the thread. If that's any indication of their scarcity.

I found two Bernard/Schollhorn/Sargent pliers at a tool meeting last Saturday. They have jaw styles that I haven't seen before. One might be for setting grommets or eyelets, and the other might be some kind of crimper.

I bought a pair of crimpers that I will never use with the hope that they would be a new addition to this thread... only to find out when I got home that 3baygarage already posted a pair like this on the first page.

Oh well, since I bought 'em, I'm going to go ahead and post them. Here they are. I've not seen them in any catalogs. I'm wondering if they were a special batch order. I measured them and the dimensions match the 2348A base pliers in the 1961 Sargent catalog (except mine have a spring).

I picked up a pair of standard parallel jaw pliers Friday that are not branded Schollhorn or Bernard. The only marking is:

Looks like that swap meet coughed up at least two pairs of Schollhorn Bernard pliers Jock. This pair of 120 round belt pliers was in a loaded Craftsman roller I bought along with a bunch of other tools and stuff. Pics along with the cat cut I swiped from upthread. Ed.

I still haven't found them useful for anything related to keeping my dang pants up, but they're nifty to look at!

Yes, I am pretty sure I would get along fine without the round belt pliers in my kit but I do have Grandmas sewing machine as well as several small round belt driven tools so you never know....I may try them out someday.

My hunch would be made by Sargent for Stanley-Judd with permission to use the 'Bernard' name, which Sargent acquired along with all the Schollhorn equipment (machinery, tooling, etc), inventory, and rights to manufacture in 1948, for marketing. But I don't know that for fact. Sargent used the Bernard name on their own tools, too, when Schollhorn was a division (1950's). I don't know when they stopped that practice, but there is no mention of a Schollhorn Division and no sign of the 'Bernard' name in the Sargent & Co. 1961 catalog. The other possibility is Stanley-Judd acquiring Sargent at some point after 1961, in which case they would've also acquired the TM, and they were continuing the same strategy. Even though we see some Sargent tools here on the Schollhorn thread, which was inevitable, I suppose, I don't know much about Bernard after 1961, and even less about what may have happened even later.

Good information, but my ??? Was for text I could not read. Should have guessed at Reg? For clarity, but that’s not my strong suit this week according to co workers.

I was also a little disappointed at how late they were, was hoping closer to the merging of Stanley Works and Rule and Level in the 20s

Gotcha. Yes, almost certainly "Reg." The question is valid, and a good one, read the other way, too, though. It's odd enough seeing an older TM that has been transferred through acquisition a couple times being marked on a 3rd party tool, but it's even odder, I think, seeing it declared on a box. That's three degrees of separation from Bernard, the patentee namesake, to Schollhorn, to Stanley-Judd.

I picked up this Sargent punch for a dollar last weekend. It is similar to one that @d42jeep posted back in May, but Don's didn't have the stop for the material being punched, and mine has an odd slot at the non-cutting end of the piece that does the punching. It almost seems that the puch piece could be removable, except for the way it fits through the removable jaw. Anyway, I don't think I have one just like this at home, so it's now mine.

About a month after I joined the GJ someone posted about finding a parallel-jaw pliers from the Schollhorn Company. A company that is rich in History and information but flies under the radar screen.

Founded in 1870 in New Haven ,Connecticut and Incorporated in 1891, they were active until being sold to the Sargent Co. in 1948. W.B. Bernard had many patents and along the way he had his share of troubles but he fought on and produced many hand tools along the way.

I will leave you with a very nice History of W.B. Bernard and his Company along with a few nice pictures, just another tool to look out for in your treasure hunts.

Just got another Sargent labeled pliers of a style I hadn't seen before. It is marked with a patent (4272888 in 1979) and the patent mentions it as a tool to trim ends of venetian blind slats, but mine has some slight differences from the patent images. It is also marked "Klever Tool, Golden, CO". As it happens, the inventor was from Golden, CO, and as far as I could tell there was a company "Klever Creations" company in Golden that was formed in 2000 and was dissolved in 2004 but I have no idea if they were connected to the tool or not. There's another Klever Tool currently making a box knife or similar but doesn't seem to be connected my pliers.
Notice the the pivot pins are held by E-clips instead of rivets or bolts.
I just can't pass up an odd Schollhorn patent pliers.

Not Bernard, Sargent, Schollhorn, or even pliers with sheet metal handles, but similar compound design:



L.S. Starrett No. 1 5-1/2" cutters with replaceable carbide cutters:

Jaws are supposed ro be square, but clearly modified. these cut spring steel like butter. .050 capacity, so the narrowed jaws don't really hurt.

Those are coveted and hard to find, Outlaw. I've seen a few posted on GJ over the years, but not too many, and coming up empty on a search, so probably not accompanied by text. There is one at the very bottom of page 2 on the Starrett thread.

EDIT: Also, good thing only the replaceable jaws have been modified. Finding standard replaceable jaws might take some looking, but should fit just fine.

Jaws are available new @$140, a pair so not in any rush for those. I do have an Eprey search on in case some come up inexpensive...

It wasn't until the last couple of decades that diamond cutting and grinding tools were really available for most folks.
