Finally made a stop at the nearby ReStore after what seems like weeks. Definitely walked out with a lighter wallet, but well worth it. A little over $30 for everything and all US made. Two Ridgid ball peen hammers, channellock 440, 6LN DeWitt vise grip, 3” Brink and Cotton c-clamp and three SK sockets.

Well, that was different!

I stopped at a TOO on the way back from lunch today, where I found a tool I've been looking for for years:

53819165807_aed4556a6b_b.jpg

(Sorry, horrible background)

53819165782_9d4eca762c_b.jpg

Why was I looking for it? Because it's MINE! I loaned that tripod and head to a co-worker between five and ten years ago, and they then moved without returning it.

I carried it up to the cashbox--it was unlabeled--and asked what they were asking for it. They countered with what would I pay? I answered : Five bucks for storing it for the last decade or so, and explained the situation--pointing out several modifications I'd made, and that the combination of tripod and head were likely unique in the NE Oregon area. They agreed.

The Acratech Ultimate head still brings nearly $400 used, and the Gitzo Explorer 2220 legs about $300. The legs will need some work, and the anodizing on the head is bleached to a deep blue instead of black, but it's good to have it back home.

Wow Timm, I've dreamed of finding stolen stuff at a flea or YardSale, not often does one see it happen!

Glad you recovered it!

Now, who is a A-hole that you need to "have a talking to"?
Not the folks I bought it back from. While these are some skeezy-looking characters, and the kind of picker/hoarder I look down upon (buy everything, let it rot), they're basically honest (maybe not real bright) and I got no argument about it being originally mine. I think the guy at the cash box appreciated me offering to pay anything at all to recover something basically stolen.

I'm pretty sure I recall who I loaned it to. A real low-life. College business school grad, self-promoter who was the marketing guy where I worked back then. I think he gamed life for all it was worth. He left the area a while back.

Maybe being someone who has to produce results to prove my worth, I'm prejudiced.

No Timm, you're not, those gamers exist everywhere, and as far as I'm concerned many, if not most people that go get an MBA, do so as a license to game life.

I’m at about 11 out of 12 sales being worthless and haven’t been out picking in a while. Finally got lucky today and went to a sale where a family was cleaning out the deceased father’s tools. A lot of HF tools but also a lot of Craftsman. There were some great wood working tools but they had definitely done their research. Prices were at eBay prices and I didn’t really need any of them. Was able to walk out with a modern set of Craftsman 22mm - 8mm wrenches and a swivel 1/4” drive ratchet for $30.

Eventually, they enter politics--but we don't talk about that.

I'm NOT defending people with MBAs (I have yet to find anyone who respects or would hire one)...

...but politicians are people with law degrees that don't have the stomach for practicing law...

Last weekend I posted a Wizard socket set I found at a swap meet. I was able to fill out the socket sizes and add a couple of extras.

Today I stopped by the first day of an estate sale, and they had another of these Wizard socket sets sitting there with a $75.00 price on it. I looked it over and saw that it was in excellent shape and nearly complete. It also had some Husky and Williams items and a couple of pieces of Craftsman V. On the table, I noticed a Wizard 3/4 socket from the set, and she had just put a $1.00 price tag on it. I approached her with the tagged socket and asked if I could take a couple of sockets from the box for the same price. She said "why don't you just buy the whole box?" I replied "Not at that price." She said "it has a Craftsman set in it." I pointed out it "is a Wizard set, Western Auto. You can take the Craftsman stuff out of it and we can set a price." She went over to the box and looked through it, the asked, "What are you offering?" After a little negotiation, we settled on $20.00.

Here is the box and contents:
Wizard Box 4 Cropped X.jpg
In the box are the Wizard items:
Sockets, 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 1/2, 9/16, 19/32, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 25/32, 13/16
5-1/2" extension H2805
Cross Bar
Swing Head Handle H2821
19" Speeder Handle H2818
Patented 32-tooth Ratchet H2833
Box with Label

Non Wizard stuff:
Craftsman =V= 1/2 dr. 3" extension
Craftsman -V- 1/2 dr. ratchet 44975
Crescent Tool Co. K405 screwdriver
Bonney A-720 1/2 dr. hinge handle
Husky 1/2 dr. 12-pt. items:
CS25 10" extension
CSD26 13/16 deep
CT1228 7/8
CT1226 13/16
CT1222 11/16
CT1220 5/8
Thorsen 1/2
CS81 1/2 to 3/8 adapter

Williams 1/2 dr. 12-pt.:
S-15 Speeder
ST-218 9/16
ST-226 13/16
Powr-Craft D84-4865 13/16
S-110P 6" extension
S-115P 10" extension

Photos of the label:

The inventory in the label shows the set is missing the 7/8, 15/16, and 1" sockets. I have these in the first set. I intend to return to the sale to look for these, but I doubt that they will be there. Anyway, I am able to complete the set.

Here is a photo with all the Wizard laid out:

I am calling this morning's flea finds (Lugz 2024_40) my "There's Nothing Like a Deadline" haul.

Not for the tools...

2024_40A.jpg

...which include...

/ a funky offset screwdriver with a twist (needs to be de-rusted to see the markings)

/ A&M bicycle wrench

/ A wartime-, jeep-, and GMTK-correct Billings M-1025 DOE wrench

/ Three (3) 800 series Duro-Chrome ignition wrenches

/ Probably Duro-Chrome igntiion pliers

...and...

/ Unbranded (guessing Williams) Chrome-Alloy ignition pliers

...but for the old elementary school desk that is underneath them! :bounce:

One of my grandboys, Jack, is turning 4 on July 1st. I always like my gifts to be something special, something different, something he will remember me by for a long time, and usually not storebought. But I've been busy with work and other things and it just got away from me. I was ecstatic to see it.

I have all weekend to refinish it. I am going to sand and stain the wood. Taking suggestions on the iron frame (currently original industrial brown), the chair upright (currently original OD), and the steel desk tub (currently original industrial beige). The missus votes all black, but I'm not sold on that.

On the student desk, I'd be tempted to leave as much of the "historical markings" on the top, paint the bucket and "rat rod" the frame and seat uprights.

The real Q is what to use in the inkwell hole? :see:

@Private Lugnutz - weren't the frames on those things originally kind of a dark beige-ish color? (Kind of yuck-o I know, but some variation of that toward a color - muted - might be an option.)
When I was in school in the 60s, the all in one piece units were all tan, a light sickly shade. I bought one for mY daughter at about 4 or 5, and just touched up that same tan. She had almost the same desk in school two years later. 😞

I don’t think you can go wrong painting the frame ANY color other than the original blah-balogna-band-aid color you euphemistically call “brown,” four.cycle calls “beige,” and RTM correctly terms “sickly” (Rabbit Angstrom called it “dirty pink”).
If it was wrought iron, I’d agree with MrsLugz, but since it is not, I don’t. Absolute black shows scrapes, spatters, etc almost as much as white or “cheerful” colors.
I think there are three reasonable options:
Seize inspiration from the OD upright and your own Jeeply interests (little grandLugz is bound to share them), and do it the Army way.
Go dress blues.
Go metallic. I personally favor gunmetal gray - just makes sense on metal components. Don’t be tempted by silver, gold, bronze, or copper.

If you go gray, go with Hammertone, -once cured (hot sun works wonders) it's very durable. - We used to paint sprint/dirt can frames/cages with the stuff.

That's what I was thinking, but Mrs Lugz put the nix on that. I think my son would also like it, but DIL might turn up her nose.

Well, I am really leaning that way after disassembly. (See Pics.) The beige was not original, and "the brown" was rusty OD. :) Everything steel was OD. And not just OD, but a deep, glorious, late wartime shade of OD that would actually look really, really good on a jeep. Not that OD wasn't popular outside of the military, but I wouldn't be surprised if this came out of Dix.

Here's the kicker... this grandboy belongs to my son who is the West Pointer and doctor. He is still on active duty. Just made Lieutenant Colonel, just re-assigned to Walter Reed. They've been in their new house 2 weeks.

I think I'm going to stay OD and paint his name in a nice youthful but period correct font on the front of the desk in blue outlined in orange, his favorite colors.

Can I borrow that to pop my back one good time. Been about 15 years since I’ve done that.

Does that say Colombia Manufacturing or Westfield Manufacturing on it somewhere? If so, it is the same company that used to make the bicycles. I'd lean towards a nice bright kids bicycle color too. Current production:

Just as a point for originality......
the newer chewing gum does not stick to the underside as well as the old "GOOD" stuff!

I like the green theme, Just makes it seem original with a little better upscale coloring without the mundane coloring that all school desks were.

Not tools, and from a thrift shop. $3 each, and all like new. Going on eBay tonight. Don't laugh until you look them up. Especially the one on the bottom left.

Today was auction pick up day from an Tuesday night ending auction. Sadly the 3/4" ratchet is missing the selector and the screw. Rebuild kit ordered to fix that and then a large bucket of wrenches. The large majority being raised panel Craftsman Industrial. I may sort through the import box I have and see if I can fill in the Popular Mechanics sets as they seem to be comfortable wrenches and might be a good homeowner/low cost setup.

Or maybe a juice-holder would be more age-appropriate.
Isn't that already a hi-tech "juice" holder??

If MsLugz and DIL have nixed the "historical markings" and you're going to sand them out, have you considered painting the top with that "chalkboard" paint? Hand him some colored chalk and let him draw jeep controls to drive in his imagination.

I looked for a branding everywhere, hoping for one, so I could possibly date it, but couldn't find any mark. I would say prewar or wartime. Certainly older than 60s. There were a few for sale on Etsy and the like that are identical, but none of those are identified either.

Just picked up my auction win from this morning. Going to be removing the pump portion and putting it on a machine that is currently 3ph (same 7.5HP). Heavy as hell

Best part was it only cost me $30.75 after fees! Was listed after a few 5HP 3ph, and a random 2-phase(?!), so guessing most didn't realize it was Single Phase.

I hit one sale on after lunch today. Only one tool, but a good haul of shop expendables:

53821299912_d924f49cf5_b.jpg

A selection of M5 304 SS button-head screws, unopened. Devcon 2-Ton epoxy, as seen in Life magazine--still good, unopened. About 1/2 of a 500' roll of 18 AWG control wire. Full, unopened 10lb spool of 0.030" ER70S-6 welder wire--exactly what I use for most stuff. Brand new, unused Vacuum coolant refill system (in possibly the worst designed blow-mold case yet)--very handy, as I intend to replace the radiator and hoses on my Toyota next week.

$25 for all.
