I hit the most interesting estate sale I have been too all year. Sadly, do to getting over a cold, I wasn't able to make the first couple days, but lets go over what I found before my thoughts. Top is a Goodell Pratt push drill, Blackhawk double square drive wrench, P&C wrench, and then a USN rivet set:
53996022280_d72e417766_b.jpg
almost complete, it is missing one of the sets.
53996022835_3d4bc51f3e_b.jpg
a rather standard '20s ignition set. And the Belle of the Ball:
53995597331_58ecaa3fb8_b.jpg
A 20's Western Auto tappet wrench set. I paid $30 for all of that.

Now, this estate was of a Model T restorer, and parts/tool/antiques squirreler of epic proportions. The amount of stuff still there, and the quality of it, on the third day of the sale was amazing. The lathe (Logan) and mill (HF) were still there, plus a vintage bench press, valve surfacer, and other shop tools. And every bench was still covered with stuff. In other words, it was priced too high, and they were just starting to move (barely) on prices. Tomorrow will be 50% off, and I expect there to be a gold rush but it will still leave a ton. I overheard someone ask if they had advertised this sale nationally, which would attract vintage parts dealers and such, but no. And the family agreed to them walking away at the end of Sunday, with no more to do. I have the feeling that a lot of good stuff will go to scrap, and a lot of history will be trashed. Every time I turned around, I saw something cool, rare, one of a kind, and I had missed the first three times I walked past that spot.
These types of sales are both the stuff made of dreams as well as nightmares all wrapped in one. I love these types of sales but also cringe at the high prices because I know the good stuff will get scrapped and meanwhile the family thinks-“ the old man was crazy. Why did he hang onto all that old junk. See I told you nobody wanted it”. Meanwhile it’s really due to the uneducated and unrealistic pricing 🙄
IMG_3272.jpegThere I was, feeling sorry for myself yesterday, but then I noticed an Outdoorsman Flea Market was going to set up at Lazybrook Park in Tunkhannock Twp, about halfway home from my parents’ place. I don’t think I’ve ever been here, for all the times I’ve driven past Tunkhannock. The lenticular truss bridge is one of four surviving in PA.IMG_3275.jpeg
MrsLS&I used to meet my parents at a BK 5mi from here when our kids would spend a week with them on vacation. It should have been here: nice park.
Late start getting out, delayed by pulling their rowboat and a kayak out of the lake they live on, so I missed whatever crowds were here at 8am. But I found some venders set up and looked over fishing, trapping and hunting gear and related ephemera, pelts, etc. A couple guys had mechanics tools, so I pawed through those, paying $2 total for an old 1/2dr Snap-on breaker bar, ratcheting adapter, 5/8” Blackhawk socket and Bonney RF12 female 1/4dr sliding tee, which all need derusting before I can try seeing dates.
IMG_3270.jpegIMG_3271.jpeg
Unlooked-for bonus: $6 bbq chicken thigh w mac&cheese - supporting local outdoors org - mmm.
Oh heck yeah! The ratchet adapter is a great find!

Picked up a 7” boxwood scratch gauge, to go in my WW2-era Carpenter Tool Kit. At an antique mall where most of the interesting stuff was grossly overpriced, this was a pleasant surprise, relative to the other things.

And I thought I swung big with a vintage Blackhawk find yesterday, dang you knocked it out of the park!

Also, beautiful park.

Stopped by the Leighty’s Flea Market in Altoona, PA on my way down to DC for a 3-day meeting. Picked up a box of green painted wrenches, sockets, etc. in a tool box that are still in the 4Runner as I didn’t want to bring them into the hotel. Box is full of Thorsen, Snap-On, etc. I will clean them up when I return and see what I’ve got. $20 for that load.

Also found a knife guy (my primary collecting focus) that had this Schrade-made Snap-On 60th Anniversary from 1980. $20 for that one. Needs a gentle cleaning, being careful not to further degrade the scale etch.

One each You **** for @3baygarage, @LesserSon & @Shergar!

Hit the second day of an estate sale of a good ol' boy shade tree mechanic about 40 miles north of here and ran into @tin medic.

Most things were fairly high priced and he had a big assortment of Snap-on sets and loose pieces that the company was asking ebay prices for. But I've found, more often than not, high priced sales always have some nice pieces that are relative bargains if you dig deep enough. Usually they're things they can't, or don't take the time to, identify or seem too dirty or rusty to be worth much.

Here are the little treasures I turned up:
Craftsman Crown Wiggler Set in pristine condition, including the instruction booklet,
Center Finder for a Starrett 4" Combo Square,
Shurlite Sparker,
Snap-on Vacuum Grip No. 72-A Upholstery Ring Pliers, 1950 date code,
3/8" Nap Paint Roller.
$12 - 25% + tax = $9.75
sep 14 24a.jpg

sep 14 24b.jpg

sep 14 24c.jpg

For two hours I scoured the internet looking for what these things were designed for and only came up with one picture and no description. I finally found a post on "Progress is fine, but it's gone on too long", about Forged Steel Products. At the bottom of the post was a video link "...to a guy who only collects Vacuum Grip branded pliers," entitled "Vacuum Grip Pliers Mobile Museum." As I suspected, it turned out to be Garage Journal's very own @FSP Vac. Tools in an interview he gave to some video blogger back in 2015. But the best part was, in response to the blogger's question if there are any specialty tools that are particularly interesting, he immediately pointed to one labeled No. 72 Upholstery Ring Pliers, due to their rarity. Woohoo! Of course, his were FSP branded and mine have the Snap-on brand. Further research was required to find out how they use hog rings to fasten upholstery--who knew?

Left Behind:
Along with all the Snap-on sets, four actual fire hydrants (each priced $300-$350) and a Walker Roll-A-Car Floor Jack, I left this Jo-Line Jomi 750 inch pound torque wrench, marked USAF Size 2.

Been quiet around here but it usually seems sales with man stuff pickup the weekend after labor day. That said, on Friday hit for 4 sales in close proximity to each other and came up empty handed. Go home and have lunch and peruse CL & FB and see a sale pop up on FB that is like 5 miles down the road so I head out. I have to remind myself to check CL & FB when I am out because quite a few people don't post until they have things set up. Sale started at 9:00 am but didn't post until 11:00 am and I got there at just before noon. Quite a few tools and looking over the tools I was pretty certain were he had worked, yup worked as a tin knocker at the local GM plant up the hill from his house. Most stuff I already had enough of so picked up a bunch of Vise Grips as well as 3 William's M-52 1/4" ratchets, all in at $45 so not to bad.

Saturday morning hit only one private estate sale that come to find out was for gentlemen who had ran a auto restoration/collision shop. Gentleman had passed quite few years ago and thus most of the good tools looked to had gone away through the prior years. Lots of miscellaneous/ missed pieces thrown and hiding out so was able to dig out a Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver, MAC and Snap-On metric sockets and MAC mini pliers all for $5
Also picked up the Neiko metric wrench set for $8, never heard of them but for $8 and metric I said what the heck.

Cleaned up enough to read “Pat Pend” on the ratchet adapter. So, a little more than 100 years old (patent granted 30Jan1923). The gummy grease inside is seems about the same age. I have it soaking in a solvent. The breaker has “Milwaukee USA” instead of “Made in USA.” I don’t see a date code.
I’ll finish cleaning these and pop them into my small SO collection.

Collecting Snap-on still has a directory to those "grenade" style ratcheting adaptors, if you want to date yours a little more accurately. I had one I paid $5 for, I ended selling for $500ish. So, you know...

Friday I went to some sales. The first was a garage sale with tools. I made a pile and got out the door for $60.00.
Dallas Sale 1.jpg
Mossberg K-9 Auto wrench
Williams 0474A adjustable pin spanner
Herbrand 317 "Van Chrome" screwdriver
ZIM Flathead Ford valve bar
Lectrolite Flathead Ford valve bar
Chrome Molybdenum DBE 7/8 x 15/16
MAC S 4 starter wrench (Chrysler and ?)
McKaig-Hatch KMO-326A fuel and water pump for Detroit Diesel
3/8" tommy bar (Craftsman or SK?)
BRAKFIX brake rivet tool set, in box
Snap On FDO-22 crowfoot 11/16
4 T-handle Allen wrenches

Dallas Sale 2.jpg
Step clamp set for a milling machine. Missing some parts, but the steel rack was well worth the price. You can never have too many clamps.
Sockets:
Walden (Circle WW) 214 P.D. 1/2 dr. 6-pt. 7/16 Power Drive socket.
SK 40418 3/8 dr. 6-pt. deep 9/16
VARCO 1/2 dr. 6-pt. 1" "Pat. Pend." My first VARCO tool.
Wards "Chrome Vanadium" 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 1-1/4
Proto stuff:
4 ea. 4016 heavy-duty puller arms. These are grind-off's but I think they were factory-made for a customer, since they all have exactly the same relief ground in the jaw hook to clear a shaft behind the bearing race. I bought four of these pullers earlier this Summer, so this gives me some arms that I needed.
6474 adjustable hook spanner
155B 10 ft. tape measure
6435 Torque Adapter 11/16
3336 Obs. DOE 9/16
1120-L long DBE 5/16 x 3/8
Plomb 6734 Valve Adjuster
Lufkin No. 016 6" Boxwood Caliper
Lee Enfield No. 4 bolt assembly
Stanley pocket screwdriver
"ZIPPO" small tape measure (for use at garage sales)

There were some other sales, and these turned up for a total of $18.00.
Other Sales.jpg
Two partially used 500-ft. spools of 10 gauge THWN wire.
LTS magnifier lamp. It works!
Sockets:
Indestro Super 2720 3/8 dr. 12 pt.
Snap-On SW-220 "E" 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 5/8
Snap-On "-7" 1/2 dr. 6-pt. 13/16

SK 319M 3/8 dr. 6-pt. 19mm

I thought they misplaced a decimal.

The wire was perhaps the biggest bargain. Not as good as ctuai's silver brazing rods, so he gets a big ****!

Nice find.

Just as an FYI, we have a thread down on the Vintage board just for knives. Some of us who participate here on the Garage Sale thread post our knife finds and discuss them in more detail down there, including @gpw_42 , who started the thread. And lots of guys post on that thread who do not post up here.

Use the A-Z Index of threads in the Sticky to find it.

I know a few of you have persevered like this before, but I hadn’t until this weekend. My first stop Friday had maybe forty bins that were full of random sockets, wrenches or other tools. Many of you have worked to the bottom of a box/bin before finally landing the goods, so to speak. I never thought I’d do it, but I started on one, maybe two gallon, bin and found one vintage wrench on top and decided to keep searching. It felt like one vintage socket/wrench and then 99 junk ones. I lasted about an hour and went through only maybe half of the bins. Luckily most other customers gave up after a minute or two. With a full night to recover, I returned Saturday and slowly tackled the remaining bins. Never again, but it worked out to a pretty good haul!

Armstrong, Vlchek, Barcalo-Buffalo, Crescent MoToR-Kit

IMG_4749.jpeg

P&C, Blackhawk (including two arrowhead sockets, and a HeXo 1930s wrench), Williams’ Superrenches.

IMG_4752.jpeg

Craftsman (including two C-series sockets), SK (including three SK Chrome on bottom), Bonney, Western Giant, Riverside

IMG_4753.jpeg

Plomb (including a couple Penens and a Firestone), Stiletto punch, Cornwell ignition wrenches, Arrow 6” adjustable, Blue-Point

IMG_4756.jpeg

XCEL adjustable socket wrench, Harrold pliers, Utica 5” Button pattern pliers, Thorsen, Walden Worcester, Duro Indestro and some New Britain (including X-circle DC wrench)

<Ahem>
The “H” pliers are Harrold, not Herbrand. The 5” Buttons pliers with the classic depressed diamonds grip pattern are Utica. Maybe they are stamped Vlchek (the faces don’t show), but the forged-in 3diamonds U-TI-CA logo is visible inside the handles.
Both appear to be beautiful examples. Congrats!

Put together a small pile at a local estate sale this morning. Brought it to the gentleman working the sale, who responded with "just take 'em." So for the grand price of free:
  • Lisle scraper
  • 5" Irwin Vise Grips
  • 6" Milwaukee Impact Bit Holder
  • 12" Irwin Clamp
  • German Puma 6396 Original Bowie. Serial dates it to the third quarter of 1969. Sheath was cracked, moldy, and filthy, but the knife is literally new old stock. Still has the factory edge and original sticker noting the blade temper.

That Puma is a terrific find. The stag used by Puma is the best of the best.

Free?!! Is there a category above YOU ****?

Today I picked up a few lots from an auction. This particular auction house takes one (usually terrible) photo of the lot, so most of the hand tool lots are a mystery until you get it.

I’ve already sorted/culled this, so not everything is pictured.

Basically anything Big Box Store and under quality goes into a box, anything I want to keep or needs more investigation goes into a different one, stuff to go to the booth or otherwise sell goes in another, and “non sellable junk” goes into a bucket (anything broken/bent/ruined beyond repair). I keep it around for projects and tool making.

Craftsman stuff gets its own box. I’m not into it, I don’t bid/buy it intentionally, but I end up with quite a bit in these auction lots. Once I have enough I list it all together as my own lot.

I lot up the cheap stuff and either sell it cheap, or give it away to someone who needs it.

Highlights were the hammers, Snap On Brake pliers, Diamond Fence Pliers, some Proto, Indestro, and Lectrolite wrenches, and old hex drive socket set that I can’t identify, and Sargent Bernard’s Parrot head Pruners.

There is a YE Tool brake plier set I can’t find much on, but it looks identical to the Kraeuter version. Speaking of Kraeuter, two pairs of pliers ended up in the junk bucket unfortunately. They had a hard life.

I also won a lot with a CP 1/2” air impact and 3/8” air ratchet, and a Matco 3/8” impact for $3 after no one bid and the auctioneer dropped it to $1.

All in about $30.

Here is this weekend’s haul in three pieces. 1st bit was from near where MLW was going to be on Friday, started Thu, but work was too chaotic to even look at ads . Lots of pix of craploads of tools, on tables, in piles, nothing I could discern. She sent a few pix, had her grab a few items, including a 24”x 4” miter saw, Warranted Superior is all we know so far. Oh, and very rusty. Also spotted two orange ish handled screwdrivers, to,d her to grab them if Vaco or XCelite. Oops, Jensen?, those will do just fine thanks.

PXL_20240914_235750373-X3.jpg

First stop of Saturday was a local stop with both 8am and 9am start times posted. In vacation recovery mode, we didn’T get rolling with breakfast in hand til 9. Turns out the vultures arrived at 7, and the pots MLW was after sold right at 8. Grabbed a large roll of thick leather, a Utica 11 wire cutter cheap.

Second haul came from a nearby rural town annual barn sale, that is really more like a flea market now, everyone who can gets in a central area or two. This one is fun to attend, as being a small town, everyone knows everyone, very friendly. Found some real goodies in the past, so fun shopping.

First couple of rows had nothing, then found 2 matching cigar boxes, then hit a retired United mechanic with some fun tools, but only a few sockets of interest, and a Craftsman RA ratcheting screwdriver, which went to a buddy today, next row had a guy with a Rubbermaid tote full of saws. Poked thru it, he said $20 for the box. I pulled out 3 Disston and 1 Atkins saw, and got the answer i dreaded, $20. Took the box, he’d hold it for me til later. Wandered down a side street, grabbed nothing, but gabbed about apple trees with a guy who had a bunch of heritage trees. Little later ran into another box of saws, and a buddy bought one, said he’d tried to buy one out of another box, but was already sold. Oops. We told him to catch us later, but we never reconnected. Rest of the fields were pretty dry, so we headed back to the truck to pack up, and a neighbor had texted me pix of the saw my buddy bought, two hours prior. Turns out he was standing between my truck and my location, his wife was negotiating to buy a tiny sailboat 8’ long 4’ wide. I offered to put it in the truck, save them an hour round trip to get their bigger car with roof rack. She was thrilled. We loaded up our hauls, added the sailboat, and jaunted off to other nearby sales they had seen.

Next sale had a stash of vintage tools, from one guy’s dad, in rough shape, Kennedy box w twanged lid, no front flap, various rusty Starrett like tools, and a couple of OddFellows. Recognized the Boos name and shape, and the Vice Grip like tool’s brand name is now escaping me (BMC), but knew @Private Lugnutz was aware of both. Got them out last night, realized both need help in adjusting, might be toast. Also an old Craftsman ratchet, I think BE era. Last hit came from the town vet, and got a 20Mp Nikon PnS, and Olympus stereo voice recorder real cheap. The camera powered up ok w new batteries, and took a pic, so hoping the recorder works too.

All in the pics below, the 3 saws with red painted handles are Disston & Sons 12” #4, two with etches, one of which says Manual Training something. Probably the best of the bunch, and I hadn’t seen them til after purchase. The miter box saw is 28x5”, the other WS is 16”, last is 12” again. Lots of rust.

This pic of saws, the left ones are more interesting, older, decent brands, decent condition. The right stack, not so much, they may turn into donors. Newer, mismatched components, missing medallions, busted up. And BTW, the single saw above was half the cost of the box of saws.🧐

And the cigar boxes, they were buried in the back of the truck, had forgotten about them,

I have been looking for a 19" machinist chest so i can rotate a wooden unit from the basement to dresser top service in the MBR to hold my knife and pen/pencil collection.

Saw an ad on FBMP and messaged him today. I ran to his place at lunch. Picked up this Lumidor badged chest for $40 with a ton of Exelite nut drivers in the top tote. Looks/feels like a Waterloo unit.

Its in really nice shape and I can sell the nut drivers to pay for it.

Cheers

So I'll keep adding to my haul today - the Lumidor chest came with tools in it. It turned out to contain a veritable rainbow of Xcelite nut drivers.

Only one of them had succumbed to the dreaded white frost - but there is a faint vomit scent coming off the rest of the collection.

Cheers
